Burglar jailed after triggering ‘Home Alone-style trap'
A burglar has been jailed after he was thwarted by a Home Alone-style trap, police have said.
CCTV has been released which shows Paul Howell attempting to break in to a property in Blyth, Northumberland, but he is stopped when he trips a hidden string, which tips a bucket of water over his feet.
The householders set the trap following a number of recent attempted burglary reports, Northumbria Police said on Wednesday.
The force said Howell fled, after triggering the bucket shortly before 3am on November 9 last year, but the overturned bucket led the occupants to check their CCTV footage and report the offence.
The 56-year-old was arrested and charged with attempted burglary.
Howell was also charged in connection with two separate burglary offences the following week at another address in Blyth, when he forced entry into a property before stealing items including jewellery and bikes.
Much of this property was recovered at Howell's house in the town.
The force said Howell, of Disraeli Street, Blyth, pleaded guilty to all charges at Newcastle Crown Court in December and was jailed for three years and seven months on Tuesday.
Detective Constable Jon Mullen, who led the investigation, said: 'Burglary is an invasive crime which sadly leaves people feeling unsafe in their own homes.
'Howell is a prolific offender who is now facing a lengthy spell behind bars following this sentence.'
Mr Mullen added: 'This case is the latest example which demonstrates the importance of reporting anything suspicious in their communities.
'We will continue to act upon these reports and do everything in our power to bring those responsible for offences in our areas before court to face justice.'
In the 1990 movie Home Alone, eight-year-old Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, set a series of elaborate traps for two bungling burglars after his family accidentally leaves him by himself in their Chicago house at Christmas.

Two boys and girl arrested after 15-year-old seriously injured
Three teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a 15-year-old boy was seriously injured in Sunderland. Police were called by the ambulance service to an injured teenage boy on Margaret Terrace in New Herrington at about 6.10pm on Friday, Northumbria Police said. Emergency services attended the scene where the boy, aged 15, had sustained serious injuries consistent with being caused by a bladed article, the force said. He was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening and remains in a stable condition. His next of kin have been informed. 'I would like to reassure our communities that we're carrying out extensive inquiries to understand what happened, with three people in custody being questioned by police. 'Our officers remain in the area to offer reassurance and investigate, which involves some search activity within Herrington Country Park. 'While inquiries remain at an early stage, it is believed some of those involved could be known to each other.' She added: 'We know this is a high footfall area, and it's likely there were lots of people in and around the park at the time of the incident. Hunt for Sunderland crash driver who left scene on foot
Police are searching for a driver who reportedly left the scene of a two-vehicle crash on collision, involving a white Seat Ibiza and a grey BMW 340i, happened just after 22:30 BST on Saturday near Seat overturned in the crash on the A690 northbound, near the junction with the A19 at the Herrington Interchange, injuring the Police said the BMW driver was reported to have left the scene on foot and asked witnesses to get in touch. Drug dealer who caused Newcastle house blast which killed two people to have sentence reviewed
A drug dealer who caused an explosion which killed two people in Newcastle is to have his sentence reviewed. Reece Galbraith caused the blast at Violet Close in Benwell in the early hours of 16 October 2024 while making cannabis gummy sweets. He and his friend Jason 'Jay' Laws were using a Newcastle flat as a drugs lab when the explosion ripped through the building, killing both laws and seven-year-old Archie York who was sleeping in the flat above. Galbraith, of Rectory Road in Gateshead, pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter as well as possessing and supplying cannabis. The Attorney General's Office has confirmed that a request has been received to review Galbraith's sentence under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme, adding that a decision will be made "in due course." What is the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme? Under the scheme, anyone - including those not involved in the case - can ask for a sentence to be reviewed. The Law Officers will then have 28 days to consider the sentence and refer it to the Court of Appeal if they agree it was unduly lenient. In this scenario, the Court of Appeal will make a final decision on whether a sentence should be increased. The blast at Violet Close destroyed six of the 12 flats in the block. It was followed by a 'fierce fire' that caused such extensive damage to the whole block that it has since been demolished. Police investigating the explosion discovered that the flat operated by Galbraith and Laws was used as a 'drugs lab' to produce cannabis concentrates, known as "shatter" or "butane honey oil," in a highly dangerous process. Galbraith suffered extensive burns and was placed in an induced coma following the blast. He went on to say: "Violet Close was a close-knit, multi-racial community with many families that was literally blown apart as a result of your illegal activities in their midst, regardless of the clear risks to others."
