Andy Farrell calls up Scotland lock to British and Irish Lions squad as injury concern emerges before second Test

Yahoo2 days ago
Scotland second row Gregor Brown has been called up to the British and Irish Lions' tour of Australia amid concerns over the fitness of Joe McCarthy.
Brown joins Andy Farrell's squad in Melbourne on Sunday to provide cover for Tuesday's final midweek match against a First Nations and Pasifika XV, which is sandwiched by the first and second Tests.
McCarthy left the field in the 44th minute of Saturday's 27-19 victory over the Wallabies because of a foot issue that makes him a doubt for the Lions' shot at clinching the series in the looming rematch at Melbourne Cricket Ground.
"It was niggling away at Joe. We got him off. Hopefully we got him off in time," said head coach Farrell, who revealed that the Ireland enforcer is struggling with plantar fasciitis.
Brown joins Rory Sutherland and Ewan Ashman in leaving Scotland's tour of New Zealand to link up with the Lions. All three of them started Friday's 41-12 victory over Samoa in Auckland.
The 24-year-old has won nine caps since making his debut against Canada last year and featured throughout the recent Six Nations.
Farrell is entering his most challenging week of the tour as he balances preparation for a potentially tricky fixture against the First Nations and Pasifika XV with the greater need of Saturday's second Test.
By increasing the size of his squad to 45 players, he is attempting to prevent as few players as possible from backing up on Tuesday and Saturday while also ensuring his Test team are given an uninterrupted build up to the MCG showdown.
The Lions have won all six of their games Down Under so far and are determined to see their 100 per cent record maintained in Melbourne, but being confronted with a match at such a critical juncture of the tour presents all manner of headaches.
Farrell is embracing a fixture that was organised when original opponents Melbourne Rebels went into administration and even now refuses to separate his touring party into 'dirt trackers' and the Test team.
"We care about the squad and nothing but the squad. That's how it's been the whole time. We've never separated once. We've been all in everything together," Farrell said.
"We'll name a side internally just before dinner on Sunday and then everyone will roll in on Monday to make sure that team, in an extended captain's run like we've been doing over the past four of five weeks, has as good a preparation as we've had all tour. It matters to us on Tuesday night as a group."
Finn Russell left the field early in the dominant victory at Suncorp Stadium but was suffering with cramp only.
Garry Ringrose (concussion), Mack Hansen (foot), Blair Kinghorn (knee) and Luke Cowan-Dickie (concussion) face fitness checks as they look to be involved in the penultimate week of the tour.

NRL news: Major blow for Panthers as Dragons confirm signing of highly-rated brothers from Penrith

Ivan Cleary has previously called for NRL clubs to be compensated when their junior ranks are raided. The Dragons have confirmed the signings of twin 16-year-olds Alexander and Cornelius Pupualii in a major retention blow for the Penrith Panthers. The Pupualii twins are Panthers juniors, and highly-rated prospects. Cornelius is a 193cm-tall centre weighing in at 100kg, who the Dragons view as a long-term member of their back-line. Alexander is a 119kg second-rower, who has unfortunately missed all junior footy this season due to an ACL injury. Cornelius has been carving up in the Panthers' Harold Matthews Cup team (Under-17s). The twins are set to turn 17 later this year, and the Dragons believe they will be part of their first-grade squad for years to come. Image: Getty "The Dragons are pleased to confirm that talented teenagers Alexander and Cornelius Pupualii have agreed to deals with the club," St George Illawarra said in a statement on Tuesday. "The two will be contracted to the club until at least the end of the 2027 season." ADVERTISEMENT The Pupualii brothers grew up in Mount Druitt and played their junior rugby league with the St Marys Saints - in the heartland of Panthers territory. But Penrith had a fight on their hands to retain them, with the Raiders, Rabbitohs, Tigers, Sharks and Cowboys all expressing interest. But the Dragons ultimately won out after the twins and their parents met with coach Shane Flanagan. 'I'm grateful. I just want to give back to my family. I'm ready to work hard and I'm ready to pull on this jersey,' Alexander said via the Dragons website. Cornelius added: 'I have faith in this club's coaching staff and players. There is so much history here. We're both for the fans and can't wait to represent them.' Alexander and Cornelius Pupualii at Dragons headquarters. Hope for Dragons fans amid finals drought The Dragons are set to play the Pupualii twins at SG Ball Cup level (Under-19s) in 2026. Their signing is a massive boost for a struggling club, with the Dragons currently sitting 11th and little chance to play finals footy. ADVERTISEMENT The Red V haven't played finals footy since 2018, with Flanagan likely to miss the playoffs in his second year at the helm. However the Dragons have a good crop of youngsters coming through in the likes of Dylan Egan, Hamish Stewart, Lyhkan King-Togia, Loko Pasifiki Tonga and Jacob Halangahu. The Pupualii brothers will only strengthen their young core and give Red V fans plenty of hope. RELATED: Ivan Cleary wants compensation for Penrith juniors leaving As for the Panthers, it remains to be seen how highly they rated the twins. The Panthers have one of the best junior pathways systems in the NRL, which inevitably results in rival clubs poaching some of their best young talent. ADVERTISEMENT Speaking last year, coach Ivan Cleary called for the NRL to introduce a compensation system for when clubs have their junior ranks raided. "I think we should get dispensation, probably more in a development sense," Cleary said. "We develop a lot of players here that end up elsewhere, so I feel like we should get looked after more by the NRL in that space, apart from the salary cap and how it all works, it's hard to argue with. But I do think we should be compensated in some way for the amount of players we've developed and the status they've become throughout the league."

Scotland goalkeeper Gunn trains with PFA amid club search

Angus Gunn says training with the PFA's free agent squad is "definitely beneficial" as the Scotland goalkeeper looks for a new club. The 29-year-old was released by Norwich City this summer and has been linked with clubs in Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Advertisement Gunn is among 38 out-of-contract players taking part in the PFA pre-season training camp this week. "Being out of contract this time of year, all the players are getting back to pre-season and this gives us the same opportunity to do that and get the fitness in so we're ready to go for wherever it will be," said Gunn. "A lot of the teams go away and have a camp together, this is no different. You've got all the facilities here at Champneys. A good pitch, quality coaches and staff around - if anything it's even better. "It's a great place to come, everyone is in the same position, so it's good to speak to the other lads and the staff. "It's a little bit different than training on your own. It's definitely beneficial and gives you a good platform to go into pre-season somewhere."
