Injuries to key players dampen excitement for WNBA's inaugural Rivals Week
The week was set to tip-off with a primetime matchup between Clark's Fever and Reese's Sky on Saturday night. Clark is definitely out while still recovering from a groin strain that's sidelined her already for a few weeks. Reese has missed four of the past five games with a back injury.
Collier and Stewart were set for a second meeting between Minnesota and New York on Sunday, but neither will play in the game. Collier is sidelined with a sprained right ankle and Stewart has a bone bruise in her right knee. The two teams played an epic WNBA Finals last season, although both sides have downplayed it being a rivalry just yet.
'It's a rivalry because of what happened in the Finals last year and I think it's good that it has people talking,' Liberty coach Sandy Brondello said. 'We have passionate fans. We have people talking about our league and that's a good thing.'
Right now only four games separate second-place New York (18-10) from eighth place Golden State (14-14) with a month left in the season.
'The timing of that week is critical, because in August you start to really make that playoff push,' WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert said back when the Rivals Week was announced. 'So it would be great to have those matchups during that period to drive that playoff push into September and crown a champion in October.'
Power poll rankings
Minnesota remained the No. 1 team in the poll with Atlanta and New York behind the Lynx. Riding a five-game winning streak, Indiana moved up to fourth. Phoenix and Seattle followed the Fever. Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Golden State were the next three. Washington, Dallas, Connecticut and Chicago rounded out the poll. It's the first time since Week 6 that the Sun aren't at the bottom of the poll.
Ratings boon
Las Vegas' blowout loss to Minnesota on Saturday drew an average viewership of 1.6 million fans, peaking at 2 million. As a whole, games on ABC are up 20% from the regular season last year on the network.
Player of the week
Collier of Minnesota was the AP player of the week after averaging 24 points, six rebounds and 3.5 assists to help the Lynx win both their games last week. Other players receiving votes included Allisha Gray of Atlanta, Natasha Howard of Indiana and Sabrina Ionescu of New York.
Game of the week
Minnesota at New York, Sunday. With Stewart and Collier both missing this game a little of the luster has come out of it. Still, it's a WNBA Finals rematch and there's definitely a little extra on this game.

Ohio State's QB competition between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz remains too close to call
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — After the first quarter of Ohio State's preseason practices, the competition between Julian Sayin and Lincoln Kienholz for the starting quarterback spot remains too close to call. 'The competition continues,' coach Ryan Day said. 'They both have had good moments and moments where they're growing. I will say I've been pleased with the progress. It's going to go right down to the wire. 'The positives of having a competition is that you know every day you got to bring it. The guys are always on edge, they're uncomfortable, they're working at it. I think that's healthy for the entire building.' A quarterback competition the season after winning the College Football Playoff championship is routine at Ohio State. The circumstances, though, are different. In 2015, Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett both had experience as they battled. Jones led the Buckeyes to the title when he started the Big Ten championship and both CFP games after Barrett broke his ankle against Michigan. Sayin and Kienholz have a combined 34 pass attempts and 90 college snaps. They are competing to replace Will Howard, who transferred from Kansas State and threw for a Big Ten-high 4,010 yards and 35 touchdowns in leading the Buckeyes to their sixth national title. Quarterbacks coach Billy Fessler is looking for consistency, especially as the Buckeyes start getting more into situational scenarios during practices the next two weeks. 'We have to be great on third down and in the red zone. That's where quarterbacks make their money,' Fessler said. 'We're in a spot where we're getting more and more of those situations every day. So it's an opportunity for those guys to go out and compete.' Sayin has shown better arm strength, though Keinholz has more athleticism after playing three sports in high school. Sayin originally committed to Alabama as the top-rated quarterback in the Class of 2024 and was taking classes when Nick Saban retired. Sayin then entered the transfer portal last spring and came to Ohio State. He played in four games, including the CFP first-round contest against Tennessee, and was 5 for 12 for 84 yards and one touchdown while taking 27 snaps. The sophomore is the slight favorite to emerge as the starter for the Aug. 30 opener against Texas, but he hasn't paid any attention to the outside hype. 'I feel like I'm developing in my footwork accuracy and mechanics. It's just all about building confidence. You make a great play, you start to build that confidence,' Sayin said. The last snaps Kienholz took in a game were in the 2023 Cotton Bowl against Missouri after starter Devin Brown was injured in the first half. Keinholz struggled, as he completed only six of 17 passes for 86 yards. However, the junior had a great offseason and was one of eight Ohio State players named an Iron Buckeye, which goes to players who excel during offseason workouts. 'As a freshman going in there, I didn't really know a whole lot. I didn't really know how protections worked and I mean, now that's something that I feel like I'm pretty good at, and I go out and and execute that well,' Keinholz said. 'I've been in the offense for three years now, so it's something that I think just more time, more reps and film study, it's helped me get better.' Freshman Tavien St. Clair is also getting snaps, but is still getting up to speed with the offense. He did come in as an early enrollee and participated in spring practices. Besides quarterback, Day and the coaching staff are looking for some of the positions to get an established starting group toward the end of the week. Day used a phrase from safeties coach Matt Guerrieri in comparing this week to the third round of a golf tournament, which is typically called moving day. 'This is moving week. Luke Keaschall drives in three runs as Twins beat Tigers 9-4
DETROIT (AP) — Luke Keaschall drove in three runs for the second straight game and the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 9-4 on Wednesday. Keaschell is hitting .393 in his nine-game major league career, which was interrupted in April by a broken arm. He returned on Tuesday and has four hits and six RBIs in his first two games back. Thomas Hatch (1-0) picked up the win with 4 1/3 scoreless innings of relief. He was claimed off waivers on Monday from the Kansas City Royals. Jack Flaherty (6-11) took the loss, giving up six runs in 4 2/3 innings. The Twins took a 2-0 lead in the first. Alan Roden and Matt Wallner started the game with singles, and Keaschall drove them in with a two-out double. Keaschall had three RBIs in Tuesday's 6-3 win, including his first career homer. Almost getting no-hit at home, lifeless Mets are swept by Guardians and booed by fans
NEW YORK — The boos began to cascade down from the peaks of Citi Field in the bottom of the sixth inning and continued with each passing Mets at-bat. None of the team's players could put an end to it through the eighth inning. Cleveland Guardians right-handed starting pitcher Gavin Williams was tormenting the home side and their fans. The Mets were no-hit for 25 outs against the Guardians before Juan Soto provided an abrupt jolt with a ninth-inning solo shot. Yet it was another lifeless performance for the Mets, who dropped a 4-1 result in front of 40,072 fans Wednesday afternoon at Citi Field. The loss was the Mets' fourth straight and eighth in their last nine games as they slipped to 63-52 on the season. They went without a hit for 15 innings between Tuesday and Wednesday's losses after they were held in check after the fourth inning of Tuesday night's 3-2 loss after striking twice in the opening two innings. The only baserunners for the Mets through the opening eight innings Wednesday were Brandon Nimmo, who walked in the second and third innings, and Cedric Mullins, who also walked in the bottom of the second. Soto saved this version of the Mets from a becoming a piece of unfortunate history. The Mets had been held without a hit five times in their history, with the last no-hitter coming on Oct. 3, 2015, when then-Nationals starter Max Scherzer struck out 17 batters with Yunel Escobar reaching on an error. They had a close call last season when J.D. Martinez broke up a Braves no-hit attempt with a two-out, opposite-field home run with two outs in the ninth inning on May 11, 2024. The only solace for the Mets came away from their home field, where the Phillies were taken down by the Orioles in Philadelphia to keep the margin at 2.5 games between the National League East foes. David Peterson had been the Mets' most successful stopper throughout the season but would have needed to provide a near-perfect performance to lift up his side on Wednesday afternoon. Instead, he allowed more than two runs for the first time since June 27 when he gave up a second-inning solo shot to David Fry and a two-run shot to Angel Martinez in the top of the third.
