Colorado spring game: Live updates, highlights and reaction
Colorado's Black & Gold Spring game is today as we cap off the third spring under head coach Deion Sanders. The weather cleared up in Boulder, and it looks like a fantastic day for some football along the Flatirons.
Several starting positions are up for grabs, most notably the starting quarterback battle between 5-star freshman Julian Lewis and Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter. Other positions to watch are running back, wide receiver, linebacker and safety.
Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter will be having their numbers retired, so make sure to tune in.
Our staff compiled our predictions and standout stars for today's spring showcase. Stay tuned right here, as we'll be adding live updates throughout the scrimmage.
(Last update: 3:45 p.m. MT)
Impressive throw from Lewis to Kam Mikell leads to TD
Lewis makes his best play of the day, showing his arm strength on a dig route up the middle to Kam Mikell. The redzone possession was capped off by a physical interior run from Brandon Hood.
First scrimmage portion is done, now on to 7-on-7 redzone
Highlights from the quarter and a half of "real football" would be safety Tawfiq Byard, who looks to be CU's starting safety, Kaidon Salter, who looks to be comfortable moving out of the pocket and building chemistry with Tulsa transfer Joseph Williams. Arden Walker was another defensive standout from the scrimmage portion, beating Jordan Seaton for a sack.
The action is beginning to pick up
Dallan Hayden bursts through the line for a 25-yard gain for the biggest play of the day so far, but the Buffaloes' offense has no answer for safety Tawfiq Byard, who has made two big plays in the backfield.
The downfield passing game won't be the same without Shedeur and Travis
Both Lewis and Salter struggled to connect downfield on their first drives, and that might be a theme that holds heading into the fall.
Kaidon Salter looks comfortable early
Salter seems settled in with the CU offense, taking the checkdowns and letting his playmakers get up the field. The drive didn't end in a touchdown, but the second unit moved the ball into the red zone.
Zach Atkins with the first explosive play of the day
A nice moment for the transfer tight end as he evaded tacklers and got up the field for a chunk play.
Arden Walker starts fast
Walker beats Jordan Seaton for a sack of Lewis. Lewis looked like a true freshman on the first series, consistently feeling the pressure and throwing the ball away multiple times.
Julian Lewis gets the first nod at quarterback
QB Julian Lewis
RB Dallan Hayden
TE Sav'ell Small
WR Kam Mikell
WR Drelon Miller
WR Terrell Timmons Jr.
The distance kicking game might be fixed
A massive 60-yard field goal from Buck Buchanan
Shedeur Sanders' and Travis Hunter's number retirement
Who is suiting up for the Buffaloes today?

Georgia Two-Way Player Commits to Deion Sanders and Colorado (Exclusive)

Georgia Two-Way Player Commits to Deion Sanders and Colorado (Exclusive) originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Colorado Buffaloes had a late addition for this year's roster on Saturday night. Buford (Georgia) receiver and cornerback Kyle Carpenter announced he would be Boulder bound. The 6-foot-3, 200-pounder was a high school teammate of Buffs three-star linebacker Mantrez Walker. Carpenter ended last season with nine receptions for 142 yards and a touchdown in nine games. He also split time as a two-sport athlete with basketball being his secondary focus. In the first round of this year's GHSA 6A state playoffs, Carpenter finished with 17 points in Buford's win. Advertisement Don't be surprised if he tries to suit up for Tad Boyle's team as well. "If the coaches allow me to play both sports, I would love to," Carpenter told Athlon Sports. Colorado's 2025 high school class bumps up to 14 players. Carpenter is the third Peach State prospect for the Buffs this year, along with Walker and five-star QB Julian Lewis. It's clear Sanders and his staff are sending a message to the rest of the Big 12 as next season quickly approaches. They're going to compete and recruit in the southern region of the country by any means necessary. "The facility was like no other," Carpenter said. "The coaching staff with Coach Prime is the greatest to ever do it. Everybody in boulder just feels like family as soon as I came in." Related: Shedeur Sanders Should be Browns' No. 2 QB, says Cleveland Hosts Carpenter is ready to get to work in Boulder and says he hopes to have the opportunity to be the Buffs' next two-way star. With Travis Hunter's historic Heisman win, Sanders could start trending with players ready to be featured on both sides of the ball. Only time will tell if that happens or if 'Saucy-T' is truly a unicorn. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 15, 2025, where it first appeared.
