Dispatch, Disney's Typhoon Lagoon: Waterpark perk is refreshing and exhilirating

Travel Weekly13-05-2025

ORLANDO — It's just after noon here at Disney's Typhoon Lagoon waterpark, and the springtime sun is at its peak. Temps are hitting close to a broiling 90 degrees.
Suddenly, a loud, deep thud reverberates across the park.
That sound — part warning, part promise — sends an electric current of excitement through the crowd. My 7-year-old son shrieks, while my 3-year-old daughter clutches my side, wide-eyed with a mix of delight and a tiny bit of genuine terror. I grip her life jacket and plant my feet firmly on the pool bottom, going into my tried-and-true wave survival position.

A 6-foot swell of water comes crashing toward us, diminishing in height but not in power as it races across the massive, zero-entry pool. Even at the shallow end, it takes a not-so-insignificant amount of strength to stay standing as the wave hits my legs.
My son flies past us, laughing maniacally as the wave pushes him to shore. My daughter squeals with glee as she gets hit with the cool blast of water. All around us, kids topple like dominos, and parents lunge to grab their bobbing toddlers. Lifeguards perch above us on pool-side cliffs, vigilantly scanning the chaos.
"Again!" my kids shout, before the churning water has even settled.
And so, we wade deeper in, waiting for the pool's cycle of complete pandemonium to begin again.
Typhoon Lagoon's Surf Pool — billed as North America's largest wave pool — is just one of many, many attractions at the sprawling waterpark, but it quickly became my family's obsession. (And yes, the waves are so big you can actually surf them.)
We eventually did take a break to float the entire length of the 2,000-foot-long Castaway Creek lazy river and sample a few slides, but the centrally located Surf Pool was always nearby, beckoning us to catch one last wave.
What finally pulls us away for good is an alert on the My Disney Experience App, telling us our room at Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort is ready for check-in. We'd dropped our bags with bell services that morning — a seamless process that freed us to hop on Disney's free shuttle service to Typhoon Lagoon.
The timing feels perfect, as our early flight in and several hours of battling waves have left us red-faced, tired and ready for a refresh.
Perfect perk
The best part, however, is the fact that our waterpark visit came as a complimentary perk with our hosted Disney resort stay. This year, guests at Disney Resorts Collection properties receive free waterpark admission on check-in day — a starting value of $64 per adult and $58 per child that made arriving well ahead of our 3 p.m. check-in well worth it.
And for families visiting later this summer, those waterpark options will soon double, with both Typhoon Lagoon and its sister waterpark, Blizzard Beach, set to operate simultaneously for the first time since 2019. (Over the past several years, the pair stuck to rotating maintenance schedules, with one park staying closed while the other remained open.)
The winter-themed Blizzard Beach is scheduled to reopen on May 21.
Blizzard Beach was still closed during our stay, so I can't offer any advice when it comes to deciding between one or the other. But given that several days into our stay and two theme park visits later my kids are still raving about the "biggest waves ever" at Typhoon Lagoon, I'm pretty sure I know which waterpark would be getting their vote.

This New ‘Superman' Spot Tells Us the Movie's Gonna Cut to the Chase About Clark and Lois

There might finally be an answer about whether or not Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) knows if Clark Kent (David Corenswet) is really the caped superhero in red trunks, and it's slipped into a quick teaser DC Studios just unleashed for Superman. While previous iterations of Superman's love interest may have fallen for the glasses trick, the idea that being bespectacled could hide the Man of Steel's true identity has always been a ridiculous notion. Director James Gunn has seemingly side-stepped that in his upcoming DC Studios film Superman. In the clip below Lane cuts to the chase saying, 'Eventually people are going to find out that you're Superman.' We love to see the Daily Planet's star reporter's investigatory prowess getting down to business when it comes to Metropolis' caped hero being her boyfriend. The real power's in the glasses. 👓 💪 #Superman – only in theaters July 11. Get tickets now: — Superman (@Superman) June 13, 2025 In earlier trailers you kind of get the impression that she knows but this one confirms it. Now, what's yet to be seen is just when it's figured out—or if she's the only one not falling for the flimsy disguise. Kent responds to her question, 'Yeah, but the glasses,' with a certain confidence that's more 'Kal-El, god among us' than 'farm boy turned big city journalist.' Clearly, Lex Luthor is on his trail too as he attempts to dehumanize the hero as an alien threat, specifically targeting his identity as a man—glasses or not. It remains to be seen if Clark Kent being outed as Superman is going to just be treated as a commonplace thing for this universe, a place where he's far from the only superhero. Superman hits theaters July 11.

6 Lightweight Items For Fastpacking, Hiking And Backpacking

Having good gear while exploring in the outdoors can make or break an adventure. It's nearly summer, which means it's time to dust off the hiking boots, pull out the tent, locate your hiking poles, and determine what essential items you might need or want for upcoming outdoor trips. Whether you're planning on an easy day hike, a challenging multi-night backpacking adventure, or a fun hut to hut fastpacking journey, here are some smart items worth their weight to bring along on your next romp in nature. If you're going to be out on the trail, it's important to bring along a lightweight headlamp, even if you aren't planning on hiking in the dark. Just as essential as a First Aid kit, a headlamp is an important safety gear item. Unplanned night hiking without anything to light the way, or keep you safely on the trail, can be very dangerous. For an ultralight option, bring along the Knog Bilby 400 Headlamp. It's not only lightweight, it's also powerful and perfect for all backpacking adventures. There are only so many days you can sit in the dirt while at your campsite. Bringing along a lightweight chair, which folds in a tiny package and can easily be carried, is a luxury item to be sure, but one you'll be happy to have. The smallest and most compact chair in the Helinox lineup is the Chair Zero. Weighing in at only one pound, this small but mighty comfort item has an award-winning design and can support up to 265 pounds. Your back will thank you. Choosing lightweight gear items is important when backpacking for multiple days. When hiking and backpacking, it can be cumbersome to slather on sunscreen to every inch of exposed skin throughout the day, every day. A smarter solution is a sun hoodie that can be pulled up and over your ball cap, shielding your face, neck, shoulders, and arms from harmful rays. The Nuyarn Ultralight Merino is the high-performance material that can really go the distance. Ultralight, durable, and breathable, a long-sleeved shirt is super comfortable and can be worn multiple days in a row, especially with quick drying material. Choose from the Feathertop Ultralight Hooded Long Sleeve Tee from Le Bent, or the Tern Ultralight Merino Wool Hoodie from Outdoor Vitals. Binoculars add enjoyment to wildlife viewing, especially for kids and families. For wildlife viewing, it's nice to have a pair of binoculars or a monocular to spot birds, deer, and other woodland creatures. The Nocs Provisions Zero Tube is compact, lightweight, and hard-wearing, making it easy to bring along on outdoor adventures—it's slim enough to fit in your pack without being bulky or weighty. Waterproof, fog proof, and impact resistant, Nocs has designed a perfect solution for backpackers and outdoor enthusiasts. We've all heard that cotton may be problematic for hiking and backpacking. It's important to wear a moisture wicking fabric that dries quickly and can keep your body temperature regulated. The ARTILECT Nuyarn Sprint Tee is not only lightweight, it's made from merino fabric, a fast drying, breathable, and durable material that feels soft to the skin. This is the go-to hiking shirt for summer, whether you're on a multi-day backpacking adventure or a gentle day hike. Adding color to your outdoor wardrobe can also brighten up your experience. From backpacks to hiking boots to the perfect sun shirt, each item has an essential role. For women, going to the bathroom in the woods can be a challenge. Who wants to be fully exposed every time they feel the urge to relieve themselves? Enter: Gnara. This company makes smart pants, leggings, and shorts with a built in zipper that opens wide enough to do your business when nature calls. The perfect adventure pants, from the perfect women owned and operated company, choose from the Go There Pants, Go There Shorts, or the Go Free 7/8 Leggings.
