AM/NS India commissions India's first high-strength galvanising line at Hazira

Time of India4 days ago
New Delhi: ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (
AM/NS India
) has commissioned a new
Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL)
at its integrated steel plant in Hazira, Gujarat, becoming the first company in the country with a facility capable of producing
Advanced High-Strength Steel (AHSS)
with strength levels up to 1180 megapascals (MPa).
The development is part of the company's ongoing ₹60,000 crore expansion project aimed at scaling up its upstream and downstream production capacity. The expansion project was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2022 and targets increasing the Hazira plant's capacity from the current 9 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) to 15 MTPA, with a future goal of reaching 24 MTPA.
The new CGL is designed to manufacture Galvanised (GI) and Galvannealed (GA) coated flat steels, including licensed products from parent companies ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel. These products are aimed at meeting the demand for high-formability and high-strength materials in the domestic automotive industry, especially in view of India's Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) Phase III norms coming into effect from April 2027.
"The commissioning of the first-of-its-kind Continuous Galvanising Line marks another defining moment in our expansion project, inaugurated by the Hon'ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji. This ambitious project's efforts are now coming to fruition, and we can proudly say that the new line and upcoming facilities are designed to produce steel that matches the quality of offerings currently available in developed nations," said Dilip Oommen, Chief Executive Officer, AM/NS India.
"With the constant support from our parent companies, we have set new benchmarks and further strengthened our ability to deliver world-class products, including the highest-strength steel ever produced in India to meet the evolving needs of the automotive sector. Indigenous production from this unique line will contribute meaningfully towards the country's self-reliance goal,' he added.
The new line incorporates environmental technologies including waste heat recovery, advanced thermal energy control, regenerative electrical drives and the use of electrolytic hydrogen. These are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions intensity in line with India's Green Steel Taxonomy and sustainability goals.
In addition to Hazira, the company is also progressing plans for new integrated steel plants in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Land acquisition has commenced in Andhra Pradesh, while planning for the Odisha project is underway.
The company said the commissioning strengthens its downstream capacity for value-added steel products and helps reduce reliance on imports of high-grade steel. The facility also supports India's
Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme
and other initiatives to promote domestic manufacturing of specialised steel products.

Namma Metro Yellow Line nears commercial launch

Bengaluru: Bengaluru'slong-awaited Yellow Line of the Namma Metro, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra, is finally nearing commercial operations, marking a significant milestone in the city's expanding metro infrastructure. Sources indicate that the official inauguration is likely to take place in August, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi expected to flag off the service. Stretching over 19.15 kilometers, the Yellow Line is currently awaiting its final safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS), whose inspection is scheduled between July 22 and 25. While most technical certifications are in place—including the crucial Independent Safety Assessment (ISA) for the signalling systems—the green light from CMRS will be the final step before the line becomes operational. The ISA certification, essential for Metro safety protocols, has already been granted to the Yellow Line's signalling partner Siemens India Ltd in collaboration with Siemens AG and a government agency from Italy. With this, the only remaining requirement is the CMRS's inspection report, which will evaluate key elements like tracks, viaducts, signalling, station amenities, and infrastructure readiness. The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is reportedly considering three operational strategies, which include full-service across all 16 stations, a shorter run between RV Road and Bommasandra with select stops, or operations limited between Bommasandra and Central Silk Board. Currently, BMRCL has three trains ready for deployment, with a fourth undergoing testing and likely to arrive by July 28. Preparations for the inauguration are already in motion, with BMRCL engaging a private firm to create a promotional documentary featuring drone visuals of the route and its modern amenities. This is expected to be showcased during the launch event in early August. The Yellow Line passes through prominent locations such as Bommasandra, Electronic City, Central Silk Board, BTM Layout, and Jayadeva Hospital, promising to ease commute for thousands of daily travelers in the city's southern tech corridor. With its launch, Bengaluru inches closer to a fully integrated metro network aimed at reducing traffic congestion and boosting public transportation efficiency.

Centre's FPO Scheme Bears Fruit: 340 Farmer Groups Clock Over Rs 10 Crore Turnover

Last Updated: The Centre's initiative to create 10,000 FPOs is successful, with 1,100 FPOs reaching Rs 1 crore turnover and 340 exceeding Rs 10 crore. The Centre government's effort to set up over 10,000 farmer producer organizations (FPO) seems to bear fruit after an arduous toil in the past four years. According to a report of Financial Express citing data gathered by the Union agricultural ministry, approximately 1100 or 11 per cent FPOs have clocked a turnover of Rs 1 crore. Of the 1,100 FPOs, 340 have reportedly clocked a turnover over Rs 10 crore. The FE report stated that the growth of these FPOs are driven by digital platforms like Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), electronic national agriculture market (e-NAM), and the government e-marketplace (GeM). Now, the government is planning to reward these high-performing FPOs so that other such organisations too get encouraged to boost their business prospects, said the official as per FE report. The Central Sector Scheme for 'Formation and Promotion of 10,000 Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) was launched by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi on 29th February, 2020. Under this scheme, there is a provision for handholding support for a period of five years to each new FPO formed, and financial assistance to the tune of Rs.18 lakhs to each FPO under the scheme towards management cost for 3 years. On the occasion of 19th installment of PM-KISAN in Bhagalpur, Bihar, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi launched the 10,000th FPO. It has been registered in Khagaria district and focuses on maize, banana, and paddy. What are FPOs? 'World witnessed India's military might': PM on Op Sindoor ahead of Parliament session

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the Monsoon session of Parliament will showcase pride and national achievement, highlighting India's strides in defence, economy, and social welfare. Addressing the media ahead of the session, PM Modi pointed to India's success in Operation Sindoor, saying the military operation demonstrated a 'new form of Made in India military power' to the world. 'The houses of the masters of terrorists were razed to the ground within 22 minutes. The world is seeing the strength of India's military resolve,' he said, calling the campaign a symbol of 100% mission success. He also noted India's recent landmark achievement in space, referencing the country's first human step on the International Space Station, calling it another point of national pride. On the domestic front, Modi said India had shed its past tag of being part of the 'Fragile Five' economies and was now on track to becoming the third-largest economy in the world. 'In 2014, India was ranked 10th globally. Today, it is moving rapidly towards the third position,' he said. The Prime Minister highlighted the transformation of internal security as well. 'Our forces, with new confidence and resolve, are pushing back naxalism. The red corridors are now turning into green growth zones,' he said, asserting that the Indian Constitution is triumphing over extremism. On inflation, PM Modi said the country had made significant progress since 2014. 'There was a time when inflation was in double digits. Today, it's around 2%. This has brought great relief to ordinary citizens,' he noted, adding that 25 crore people have come out of poverty, a fact appreciated by global institutions. He also spoke about the symbolic significance of the monsoon season. 'Monsoon is a symbol of innovation and new creation. It brings new energy to agriculture and to the country's economy, especially the rural and household sectors,' he said. Calling it a 'session of celebration and victory', PM Modi said peace and progress had defined the past decade and reiterated the government's commitment to continue delivering results across sectors.
