Oman's 44.01 wins $1mn prize for innovative CO2 removal solution

Muscat Daily23-04-2025
Muscat – Omani startup 44.01 has won the Air category of the XPRIZE's carbon removal competition and awarded a US$1mn XFACTOR prize.
44.01's project based in Fujairah, UAE uses Direct Air Capture technology to capture carbon dioxide from the air, which the startup then mineralises, ensuring it can never escape back into the atmosphere.
The four-year global XPRIZE competition challenged teams around the world to develop high-quality CO2 removal solutions that are scalable to gigatonne level. More than 1,300 teams from nearly 80 countries competed. Twenty finalists were selected in May 2024 and the winners announced in New York on Wednesday.
44.01's project is one of the world's first to capture CO2 from the atmosphere and store it durably underground. The XPRIZE judges said the project represents a compelling example of a safe, high-quality, scalable carbon removal solution with potential to make a meaningful difference in the fight against climate change.
Talal Hasan, Founder and CEO of 44.01, said, 'The success of Project Hajar is testament to the leading role our region can play in decarbonising our atmosphere, providing new jobs and opportunities as we navigate the energy transition. Our climate needs decarbonisation solutions that can be deployed at scale, and we are working hard to scale up our technology in the Middle East and export it around the world.'
Having demonstrated its mineralisation technology in Oman and the UAE, 44.01 is now working to scale its technology and expand internationally. Mineralisation can be deployed on every continent and can play a significant role in helping remove CO2 from the atmosphere, decarbonise heavy industries and help countries reach their net zero ambitions.
44.01 eliminates CO2 by turning it into rock. The company's pioneering technology accelerates the natural process of CO2 mineralisation, removing it permanently in less than 12 months.

Digitising school curricula a gateway to integrated education

MUSCAT: The continuous modernisation of the education system and the enhancement of digital transformation processes in distance education through the use of information and communication technology in teaching and learning represent a fundamental starting point for the Ministry of Education in the Sultanate of Oman, through the digital transformation process it is currently implementing. The launch of the Omani Curriculum Digitisation Project fulfils the ministry's objectives regarding the e-learning strategy by converting curricula into interactive digital books, offering a wide range of diverse interactive digital educational content. The Omani Curriculum Digitisation Project is an initiative to transform curricula in the Sultanate of Oman into interactive digital content. It aims to promote digital transformation in education and provide an integrated, technology-based learning environment for students and teachers. The Ministry of Education, represented by the Directorate-General of Curriculum Development, mentioned that the digitisation of the Omani curricula is part of an integrated digital transformation plan that aligns with the goals of Oman Vision 2040. The ministry seeks to transform curricula into interactive digital content that enhances modern learning methods and takes into account students' levels. This will contribute to improving academic achievement, developing self-learning and collaborative learning skills, and equipping students with future skills. This month, the Ministry of Education launched the 'Noor Educational Platform', an integrated electronic environment for managing teaching and learning processes. It enables students to view interactive digital content related to curricula and link them to learning outcomes, contributing to enhanced personalised education for students and reducing reliance on private tutoring. Furthermore, the Directorate-General of Curriculum Development is working to expand the use of quick response (QR) codes in new textbooks to link them to digital content, while continuously updating educational resources and teacher guides and making them available through the Education Technology website on the Education Portal. The website enables students and teachers to access interactive digital books, electronic versions of textbooks and educational films. The ministry is working to modernise the infrastructure of Oman's schools through a project to equip all primary school classes with interactive screens and increase Internet speed. This will ensure an integrated educational environment that promotes interactive learning.
