
Marico's Saugata Gupta on why kirana shops are a source of competitive edge

Marico Ltd is focused on accelerating growth, after emerging from last year's intense competition made worse by high commodity prices. To tide over these challenges, the fast-moving consumer goods company (FMCG) bolstered its presence among mom-and-pop stores and streamlined its product line-up to concentrate on fewer, faster-selling items, Saugata Gupta, managing director and chief executive, said in an interview with Mint. Last week, the maker of Parachute coconut oil reported a consolidated revenue from operations of ₹3,259 crore in the June quarter, a 23% year-on-year increase. This was driven by a 9% volume growth in its India business. This growth came despite record high prices of copra, a key raw material for the company. He also emphasized that general trade, or the traditional, independently-owned small kirana shops are a source of competitive edge for Marico and other large legacy FMCG players, and that digital brands won't ever be able to crack this segment. Edited excerpts.
Have things drastically improved for consumers or do you attribute some of the volume growth improvement to better business decisions?
Improvement in inflation is gradual, so it's very difficult to put a number to this. Having said that, management has to execute well to grow irrespective of the conditions. One of the things we are looking at is that if the average market volume growth is 'x", how are we beating that. For this we have to innovate and diversify. A lot of large FMCG companies are highly penetrated and, therefore, if you have a double-digit revenue growth ambitions, you have to innovate and diversify.

Diversification has to be focused on adjacent categories. What is important to look at is not just market attractiveness, but the right to win in that market. That happens when you cater to a consumer segment you know about, because we have the consumer insight, the distribution is the same etc.
You spoke about rationalizing some stock keeping units (SKUs)—why would you do that given that over the past few years and due to high inflation, companies have launched more bridge packs to drive volumes?
Fewer, bigger, better is something which we are doing. Sitting in the office you might think of 80 things, but the person at the last mile can only remember five things. Secondly, we now have channel-specific SKUs, and I think focus is very important. There is always this temptation to keep on launching and thinking we have innovated, but there is always a hidden cost to complexity. Ultimately, a great entrepreneur is all about focus.
Isn't that a challenge given greater competition, especially from digital-first brands?
We have to use organized trade as a channel prototype and then scale up new launches. We also ensure that we have a channel-specific portfolio. What we are saying is we might add the SKU, but in any one particular channel or outlet type we shouldn't have a proliferation (of SKUs). We also have vehicles via our digital business for such launches. To give an example—we are now prototyping cold-pressed oil. I'm not going to get into general trade; we get an option today of prototyping it (online).
You recently said that the company is looking at touching ₹15,000 crore revenue in the next two years. How will you do that?
I think the move from ₹5000 crore to ₹10,000 crore took too long. It was a combination of GST, followed by the pandemic, followed by one or two years of our performance not being up to the mark. However, the fact that this year we are pretty confident of delivering say mid-20s kind of a topline (growth) gives us some momentum. Last year, we ended at ₹10,831 crore (consolidated revenue from operations).

We have to hit high single-digit to double-digit volume growth (with some inflation) along with international business delivering mid-teens constant currency growth. We will do some inorganic (acquisitions)—maybe one or two on the digital side.
Is the worst of urban demand slowdown behind consumer packaged goods companies?
Rural is fairly resilient—it is a combination of good monsoon, MSPs etc. Urban demand is linked to food inflation. I think one of the things we missed is that the commentary we hear from say NIQ (Nielsen IQ) or the listed companies doesn't reflect the kind of growth (we are seeing in urban areas), which digital brands have shown. Some of the growth has been taken away by digital-first brands.
Urban demand is improving; at the same time, I don't think the consumption was that muted. Especially now that food inflation has come down along with some part of the entire tax break. On the consumption front—you are competing with a lot of other things, and people want to invest behind experiences, travelling, upgrading to new cars, mobile phones etc. As a result, you have to innovate and continue to grow because if you are not innovating or are operating in categories with high penetration, then demand won't come automatically.
Lately, FMCG companies have made some adjustments to general trade business given online channels are eating into the business. How has growth in mom-and-pop stores been?
I think general trade has improved—it has come into a positive territory after a long time in terms of volume growth. We have done a few things—one is Project Setu, which is all about driving direct distribution. The second part of this Project Setu will be in urban areas. How do we drive the new businesses i.e. food and premium personal care brands—in channels such as chemist, cosmetics and specialty food outlets. For large-scale FMCG incumbents, it is imperative that we ensure a successful general trade system.

You always have the temptation to do short-term growth in organized trade (large chained stores and e-commerce), but the general trade system is a source of competitive advantage because digital brands are never going to be able to crack general trade. It's very difficult unless they sell to a strategic (investor). It's a completely different business model which requires significant and long-term investment.

Delhi's Saket court summons Samir Kumar Modi in Godfrey Phillips defamation case
The Saket sessions court in Delhi on Thursday ordered summons to cigarette maker Godfrey Phillips India's (GPI) former director Samir Kumar Modi in a defamation case filed by two of the company's seven independent directors. Additional sessions judge Sheetal Chaudhary Pradhan set aside the trial court's 19 May order dismissing the complaint and directed the lower court to proceed with summoning Modi. 'Considering the aforesaid appreciation of the facts and circumstances of this case and also the case laws, the impugned order dated 19.05.2025 passed by the learned trial court stands set aside. The present revision petition stands allowed… the trial court is directed to summon the accused/respondent and proceed further as per law," the court said in its order, a copy of which was seen by Mint. Boardroom clash The dispute stems from a boardroom clash at GPI in May 2024, during which Modi alleged he was assaulted. Independent directors Atul Kumar Gupta and Nirmala Bagri accuse him of defaming them by publicly claiming they had consented to the alleged assault. The other independent directors are Lalit Bhasin, Ajay Vohra, Avtar Singh Monga, Sumant Bharadwaj, and Subramanian Lakshminarayanan. Modi—and brother to former IPL chief Lalit Modi and sister Charu Modi—was removed from the board on 7 August 2024. GPI is a key player in India's tobacco market and partners with Marlboro-maker Philip Morris. Lalit Samir have differed with mother Bina Modi, who heads the board of Godfrey Phillips. Samir was removed from the board of the company last year while Bina Modi was re-elected as the chairman and managing director of the company. Samir had accused the board members of colluding to arrange an assault on him as he was trying to attend a key board meeting in May last year. Defamation case According to the complaint, the events unfolded on 30 May 2024 when an audit committee meeting was underway ahead of a scheduled board meeting. Modi, then an executive director but not a member of the committee, allegedly got into a heated argument with a security officer outside the meeting room. To avoid disruption, senior board members invited him in, where he allegedly shouted angrily and banged folders on the table. Despite the incident, the meeting concluded, and Modi later participated in the board meeting without signs of injury. Later On 1 June 2024, The Economic Times published an interview in which Modi alleged that the complainants and other board members orchestrated a 'planned attack" to stop him from attending the meeting. They say that Smir Modi's statements created a false impression that they condoned or arranged an assault, causing them social, professional, and reputational harm prompting them to approach the court. The defamation complaint under Sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code was filed in November 2024. The trial court dismissed it in May 2025, prompting the directors to seek revision before the sessions court. Sessions Court's Findings The sessions court noted that the Economic Times interview contained allegations harmful to the complainants, who were easily identifiable as public figures and board members of a well-known company. The complainants had submitted the article with a Section 65B certificate and named the reporter as a witness. The court further observed that defamation can be directed at identifiable groups, such as a company's board members. It ruled that the trial court had erred by assuming the existence of other litigation was sufficient grounds for dismissal and by denying the complainants the opportunity to present their witnesses. IndianOil reports over 80% growth in Q1 net profit at ₹6,808 cr on higher sales
New Delhi: State-run Indian Oil Corp. Ltd on Thursday reported an 83% increase in its consolidated net profit to ₹ 6,808.12 crore, up from ₹ 3,722.63 crore in the year-ago period. Speaking to reporters, Arvinder Singh Sahney, the chairman and managing director of Indian Oil, highlighted higher sales, both domestic and export and refinery throughput. The company reported the highest-ever quarterly sales volumes of 26.3 million metric tonnes. In the same period last fiscal, the company had reported 25.2 million metric tonnes of sales. "We achieved the highest-ever quarterly sales (in Q1). Petroleum sales, POL (petroleum, oil and lubricants) is up by 4% (quarter-on-quarter basis) at 22.4 million tonnes. Petchem (petrochemical) sales witnessed an increase of 10% in Q1 at 0.8 million tonnes. Exports increased by 14% at 1.36 million tonnes," Sahney said, while adding that exports by the company largely include diesel and naptha. A company statement said that during the period under review, refineries' throughput for Q1 FY25-26 was 18.683 million metric tonnes with 107% capacity utilization as compared to 18.168 million metric tonnes in Q1 FY24-25. The public sector oil marketing company's net total income for the first quarter of the ongoing fiscal (FY26) was ₹ 2.22 trillion, nearly 1% higher than ₹ 2.20 trillion in the year ago period. Amid ease in crude oil prices, IndianOil's total expenses fell 0.6% to ₹ 2.15 trillion in the April-June quarter, compared to ₹ 2.16 trillion in the first quarter of the last fiscal (FY25). "Improvement in net profit is mainly on account of higher refining and marketing margins being set off to some extent by inventory losses in Q1 25-26 as compared to inventory gains in Q1 24-25," a company statement said. On the issue of import of Russian oil amid US tariffs, the CMD said that import of crude from Russia and other sources is business as usual for the company and there is no deliberate plan to decrease import from Russia. "We are buying crude as per the economics. We are not making any extra effort for either increasing or decreasing the Russian crude," he said. In the first quarter of FY26, Russian crude comprised around 24% of the company's import basket and in case the market and global scenarios remain same the share of Russian crude is expected to remain around the same levels in the ongoing quarter (July-September), Sahney added. In the corresponding quarter of last fiscal the share of Russian crude was around 30%. On 2 August, Mint reported that India continues to buy oil from Russia, notwithstanding the penalty and calling out by the US. State-owned refiners—Indian Oil Corp. Ltd (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corp. Ltd (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corp. Ltd (HPCL)—continue to buy oil from Russian suppliers, and negotiations are underway for spot deals, Mint reported.
