Israel Attacks Starved Civilians at US-Backed ‘Aid' Centers in Gaza, 40 Killed

Rabat — Palestinians in Gaza began the first day of June with yet another massacre, as Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) opened fire on starved civilians gathered at aid distribution sites run by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF). At least 40 Palestinians were killed in Rafah, with more reported dead in central Gaza. The GHF, which began operations just last week, was established to deliver food, water, and medical supplies directly to the besieged population — thus bypassing traditional United Nations channels. However, unlike UN agencies grounded in principles of neutrality and impartiality, the GHF functions through private contractors, American entities, and under direct Israeli oversight — the same actors complicit in the ongoing genocide in Gaza. The foundation runs four distribution points across Gaza — three in the Tel al-Sultan refugee camp in the south and one in central Gaza. All four have already been targeted by Israeli attacks in GHF's first week of operation, drawing criticism and suspicion, fueling widespread accusations that Israel is weaponizing food — using aid as bait to lure starving civilians only to murder them. Afeef Nessouli, a volunteer with the medical aid organization Gila International, told Al Jazeera that the GHF has failed to deliver even the limited aid permitted by Israel. 'The GHF has not been successful to this day and has even seemed to target Palestinians when they are extremely hungry as they try to get aid,' he said. The GHF's failure — whether by design or dysfunction — was anticipated even before its launch. Just hours before aid distribution was set to begin on May 25, GHF head Jake Wood abruptly resigned, citing concerns that the operation could not uphold humanitarian principles. Wood, a US military veteran with prior experience in humanitarian operations, had helped build the GHF by crafting what he called 'a pragmatic plan that could feed hungry people, address security concerns about diversion, and complement the work of longstanding NGOs.' But in his resignation, he made clear that 'It is not possible to implement this plan while also strictly adhering to the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality, and independence, which I will not abandon.' Meanwhile, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (UNRWA), the UN's main agency supporting Palestinian refugees, reported that the roughly 900 aid trucks allowed into Gaza over the past two weeks account for just 10% of the daily necessities. 'The aid that's being sent now makes a mockery of the mass tragedy unfolding under our watch,' said Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, urging Israel to grant UN agencies, including UNRWA and its humanitarian partners, the access needed to fulfill their mandate and preserve Palestinian dignity. Founded in 1949, UNRWA has long been central to Palestinian rights — including the right of return. However, several Western governments cut funding to the agency in 2024 after Israel made unsubstantiated claims linking some of its staff to the October 7 attacks. In line with its broader campaign of targeting civilians, journalists, medical personnel, and aid workers, Israel has killed more than 300 UNRWA staff members since October 2023 – either killed while serving their communities or alongside their children and loved ones.

Israel Blocks Arab Ministers from Visiting Palestinian President in Ramallah

Rabat – Israel has refused to allow foreign ministers from five Arab countries to visit Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the city of Ramallah, located in the occupied West Bank. Israel controls all entry into the occupied territory, including its borders and airspace, and said it would not cooperate with the planned visit. An Israeli official said the meeting, which was meant to promote the creation of a Palestinian state, was 'provocative' and accused the Palestinian Authority of not condemning the October 7 attack by Hamas. 'Such a state would undoubtedly become a terrorist state in the heart of the Land of Israel. Israel will not co-operate with such moves aimed at harming it and its security,' said the official. According to reports, foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, and Qatar were expected to attend the meeting. The five countries strongly condemned Israel's decision. The Jordanian foreign ministry said the ministers rejected the move to block their visit with Palestinian President Abbas. The delegation considers the move a 'blatant violation' that 'reflects the arrogance of the Israeli government' and its 'disregard for international law,' added the statement. Earlier this week, Israeli soldiers fired what they called 'warning shots' at diplomats from Arab and European countries during a visit to the West Bank. Also this week, Israel announced plans to approve 22 new settlements in the West Bank. These settlements are considered illegal under international law and are seen as a major roadblock to peace. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia and France are planning to co-host a peace conference at the United Nations in June to revive talks on the two-state solution. Yet Israeli forces have in recent weeks shown no desire to halt or end their genocidal war on Gaza. According to Gaza's health ministry, the death toll in the Palestinian enclave has reached 54,381 since October 7, 2023. Gaza has become the 'hungriest place on Earth,' the UN lamented recently, warning that the entire population of 2.3 million people faces 'catastrophic hunger.' Tags: GazaIsraelPalestineWest Bank

Morocco approves decree to enhance educational support for children with disabilities

The Government Council, meeting on Thursday in Rabat, approved Decree No. 2.23.152 implementing Article 13 of Framework Law 97.13 on the protection and promotion of the rights of persons with disabilities (new version). Presented by Mohamed Saâd Berrada, Minister of National Education, Preschool, and Sports, the decree sets out the composition and functions of the regional commissions established within the Regional Academies of Education and Training, as provided for in Article 13 of Framework Law 97.13. Speaking at a press briefing following the meeting, Mustapha Baitas, Minister Delegate for Relations with Parliament and Government Spokesperson, explained that these commissions are tasked with reviewing the cases of school-aged children with disabilities in educational and training institutions. Their responsibilities include recommending placement or reorientation where needed, as well as monitoring the children's educational progress. Baitas added that the decree specifies the composition of the regional commissions and how they operate. It also empowers the commission president to create, by decision of the director of the relevant Regional Academy, local commissions to oversee the schooling of children with disabilities. Additionally, the regional commissions will prepare annual reports summarizing their activities. These reports will be submitted to the central offices of the Ministry of National Education, Preschool, and Sports; the Ministry of Solidarity, Social Integration, and Family; and the Ministry of Health and Social Protection.
