Morocco confirms involvement in search for missing teen who disappeared en route to Spain

Morocco's Foreign Ministry is involved in the investigation into the disappearance of 19-year-old Marouane El Mokadim, who went missing in April 2024 while traveling aboard a Spanish ferry. In response to a written question by an Authenticity and Modernity Party MP, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita confirmed that his ministry has been coordinating with Moroccan diplomatic representations in Spain since the very beginning of the case, local and Spanish media reported. Bourita revealed that the Moroccan consulate in Almeria collaborated with local Moroccan associations to circulate Marouane's photo in an effort to locate him. It also reached out to youth centers in Motril. Despite these efforts, Marouane's whereabouts remain unknown. It is worth noting that the Spanish Civil Guard launched an investigation in April 2024 after the young man's brother-in-law filed a complaint. Authorities later suggested that the young Moroccan may have never set foot on Spanish soil, as his entry through the port of Motril was not recorded. Moroccan officials verified that Marouane was registered at the port of Beni Ensar before boarding a ferry to Motril. The last known contact with him was a phone call to his brother while he was still on board. Since then, there has been no trace of him.

PAM joins Istiqlal in criticizing Akhannouch administration ahead of 2026 elections

Following the Istiqlal party, the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), another key player in the government coalition, has now criticized the Akhannouch administration's handling of certain sectors. During its meeting on Wednesday, March 12, the political bureau of the party did not hold back. The body «calls on the government to cancel the customs and tax exemptions aimed at lowering meat prices, as they have not had the desired effect». Positioning itself as a defender of Moroccans' purchasing power, the PAM expressed concern over «the price hikes and economic difficulties faced by many social groups». It urges the government to «iboost monitoring and take action against certain speculators and corrupt professionals who continue to exploit their networks to incite crises and profit from speculative activities», the PAM said in a statement. The party's criticism also extended to the government's action plan to boost employment by 2030, which is allocated 15 billion dirhams and was outlined in a circular from the head of government published last February. While acknowledging that «high unemployment is everyone's responsibility», the political bureau emphasized that «this new plan requires collective, responsible, and genuine commitment from all stakeholders, with a sophisticated national approach and real involvement from public authorities and elected officials». It's worth noting that the minister responsible for employment is Younes Sekkouri, a member of the PAM. These «friendly fire» incidents within the governing coalition are becoming more frequent. On January 11 in Casablanca, Nizar Baraka, the Secretary-General of the Istiqlal party, also criticized the poor results of the Akhannouch administration. As Morocco gears up for the 2026 legislative elections, 2025 promises to be a year of intense preparation for all parties, both in the majority and opposition, accompanied by its fair share of controversies.

«Escobar of the Sahara» : Unveiling new revelations and controversies

The unfolding saga of the «Escobar of the Sahara» is shedding light on a sprawling drug trafficking network that allegedly involves high-profile figures in Morocco. Notable among the accused are Saïd Naciri, the former president of football club Wydad of Casablanca, and Abdenbi Bioui, a former parliamentarian from the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM). In a recent session at the Casablanca Court of Appeal, Saïd Naciri staunchly denied the accusations against him. He asserted his innocence, claiming no ties to drug trafficking activities. Naciri challenged the legitimacy of the evidence, particularly phone recordings that his defense argues do not implicate him in dealings with Ahmed Benbrahim, infamously known as the «Escobar of the Sahara». According to Medias24, investigations have uncovered alleged complicity among armed forces at the Moroccan-Algerian border. Soldiers are suspected of accepting bribes to facilitate the smuggling of over 200 tons of cannabis into Algeria, benefiting Abdenbi Bioui over nearly two decades. Wiretaps have reportedly revealed that surveillance cameras were manipulated to enable these illegal activities. The case is further complicated by accusations of orchestrated false testimonies intended to sway judicial proceedings. One defendant confessed to delivering false testimony at Bioui's behest, aiming to frame his ex-wife's brother in a fabricated case, thereby pressuring her to drop a property extortion complaint. Naciri's legal team has called for several prominent individuals to testify, including Hicham Aït Menna, the current president of the WAC, Ahmad Ahmad, the former president of the African Football Confederation, and singer Latifa Raâfat, who is Ahmed Benbrahim's ex-wife. These testimonies are sought to elucidate matters such as the purchase of a villa and the alleged funding of election campaigns.
