«Escobar of the Sahara» : Unveiling new revelations and controversies

Ya Biladi15-02-2025

The unfolding saga of the «Escobar of the Sahara» is shedding light on a sprawling drug trafficking network that allegedly involves high-profile figures in Morocco. Notable among the accused are Saïd Naciri, the former president of football club Wydad of Casablanca, and Abdenbi Bioui, a former parliamentarian from the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM).
In a recent session at the Casablanca Court of Appeal, Saïd Naciri staunchly denied the accusations against him. He asserted his innocence, claiming no ties to drug trafficking activities. Naciri challenged the legitimacy of the evidence, particularly phone recordings that his defense argues do not implicate him in dealings with Ahmed Benbrahim, infamously known as the «Escobar of the Sahara».
According to Medias24, investigations have uncovered alleged complicity among armed forces at the Moroccan-Algerian border. Soldiers are suspected of accepting bribes to facilitate the smuggling of over 200 tons of cannabis into Algeria, benefiting Abdenbi Bioui over nearly two decades. Wiretaps have reportedly revealed that surveillance cameras were manipulated to enable these illegal activities.
The case is further complicated by accusations of orchestrated false testimonies intended to sway judicial proceedings. One defendant confessed to delivering false testimony at Bioui's behest, aiming to frame his ex-wife's brother in a fabricated case, thereby pressuring her to drop a property extortion complaint.
Naciri's legal team has called for several prominent individuals to testify, including Hicham Aït Menna, the current president of the WAC, Ahmad Ahmad, the former president of the African Football Confederation, and singer Latifa Raâfat, who is Ahmed Benbrahim's ex-wife. These testimonies are sought to elucidate matters such as the purchase of a villa and the alleged funding of election campaigns.

Eid al-Adha : Inmates can receive family visits but without meal baskets

On the occasion of Eid al-Adha, the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR) announced that, starting the Monday following Eid, inmates in Moroccan penitentiaries will be allowed visits from family, friends, as well as representatives from diplomatic and consular missions for foreign detainees. However, these visits will not include the delivery of food parcels. Additionally, a special meal program will be provided to the inmates during this period, the Delegation stated in a press release on Wednesday. Given the deep religious and social significance of Eid al-Adha in Moroccan society, the celebration will take place within the prisons without performing the sacrificial ritual. This decision respects the royal directive to abstain from carrying out the Eid sacrifice, the statement added.

Italy Honors Royal Archives' Head for Promoting Morocco-Italy Cultural Dialogue

The Director of the Royal Archives of Morocco, Bahija Simou, has been awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic for her contribution to the promotion of heritage and Moroccan-Italian cultural dialogue. The insignia were presented to Simou by the Italy's Ambassador to Morocco Armando Barucco, on behalf of the President, on the occasion of Italy's National Day celebration. According to Barucco, this prestigious award—of which only ten are awarded each year—pays tribute to a remarkable and exceptional contribution to the promotion of Moroccan historical heritage, as well as to the significant development of scientific and cultural exchanges between Morocco and Italy. An internationally recognized historian, Simou has distinguished herself through her rigorous work on political and diplomatic relations between Morocco and Italy, as evidenced by numerous landmark publications. As a member of the Strategic Council of the Italian foundation Leonardo MedOr, Simou plays a key role in Euro-Mediterranean academic forums, actively working to preserve collective memory. On this occasion, she praised "the strong symbolism" of this award, emphasizing that her research on Italy highlights "the geopolitical importance of both Morocco and Italy within the Euro-Mediterranean space." She also recalled the historical depth of bilateral relations, which date back to the 12th century. After Italian unification, Morocco adopted a friendly stance toward Italy, which, following Morocco's independence, became one of the Kingdom's first economic partners. Italy was also the first European country visited by the late His Majesty Mohammed V. Simou noted that this award "does not only crown a personal journey, but also affirms a commitment to a living, inclusive history—one that resists oblivion and brings to light memories long kept in the shadows."
