Who messed up Lionel Messi's Kerala visit?

Who messed up Lionel Messi's Kerala visit?

India Today2 days ago
Football-adoring Kerala has thousands of captive Lionel Messi fans. The state has street corners named after the global sporting icon. The ultra-loyal Messi fans sport his No. 10 jersey, follow his hairstyle, beard and sometimes even mannerisms. There have even been occasions when couples wore the Argentinian football jersey at their wedding ceremony. It was with great fanfare and hype that Kerala's sports minister V. Abdurahiman, in December 2022, announced that Argentina's national football team would be playing in Kerala. The minister sent a formal invitation to the Asociación del Ftbol Argentino (AFA) team, led by Messi, to visit Kerala while congratulating them for winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup.advertisement'Football is a game that transcends all barriers and unites people globally. Every nook and corner of the state (Kerala) was decorated with photos of Argentina's players and flags during the [World Cup] tournament. Your presence would be a matter of pride and inspiration for football lovers in our state,' the minister wrote in his letter, which was released to the media. In 2023, chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan visited the Argentinian embassy in New Delhi and held discussions with the ambassador to speed up the team's visit to Kerala.
Now, after over two years of anticipation, comes the dampener. Abdurahiman has had to confirm that Messi and Co. will not be visiting Kerala for the scheduled play in October. Later, the official sponsor claimed AFA had breached the agreement. This after AFA, according to the sponsor, having been paid Rs 130 crore as part of the deal. Abdurahiman said the Kerala government has conveyed to AFA that their offer to consider a visit early next year was unworkable. The government now finds itself facing not only embarrassment but the prospect of the Opposition trying to inflict political damage, not to mention the disappointment in the sporting fraternity and among football fans.'Football lovers in Kerala feel cheated,' says Victor Manjila, a former international goalkeeper and football coach, citing probable reasons for the tour being cancelled. 'The authorities and the sports department never realised the state had no football grounds of international standards. The Argentinian football authorities would certainly probe the condition of grounds, security of team members and remuneration package before visiting the state,' Manjila told INDIA TODAY.Abdurahiman, who is facing flak, had visited Argentina and Spain along with the state sports secretary to explore possibilities of collaboration for setting up sports centres of international standards in Kerala. At one point, he had claimed that the Messi-led team's visit to Kerala had been ensured for June 2024. Heavy rains in the state saw that visit being postponed. On August 4, Abdurahiman announced that AFA had cancelled the October 2025 tour due to prior scheduled matches, and blamed the All India Football Federation for not showing timely interest in the matter. The sponsors of the tour have revealed they paid Rs 130 crore as the advance demanded by AFA, and would exercise legal options if the contract was breached. But Leandro Petersen, the AFA's chief commercial and marketing officer, has blamed the cancellation on the Kerala government.advertisementThe Opposition has accused the Vijayan government of giving football fans a raw deal. 'Messi's tour was a publicity stunt, like many other claims of the Pinarayi Vijayan government. The sports minister too is making baseless claims. In the name of Messi, the minister and officials have enjoyed a visit abroad,' alleged the Congress's V.D. Satheesan, who is leader of the Opposition in the legislative assembly.Amidst the blame-game, it is ordinary football fans who lie crestfallen—their hopes soaring for two years, just like Messi's mesmerising shots on the football field, and finally crashing, like France's dream of winning the 2022 FIFA World Cup did—at the hands of Messi and Co.Subscribe to India Today Magazine- EndsTrending Reel

I wanted to play volleyball to take care of my family, says Jerome Vinith

Jerome Vinith, the star spiker and Most Valuable Player of the Prime Volleyball League (PVL) Season 3, has a new mission with the Chennai Blitz after his Rs. 22.5 lakh move from the reigning champion, Calicut Heroes. Vinith, who captained Calicut Heroes to the 2024 PVL title, acknowledged the end of his stay with his former team. 'The chapter of Calicut Heroes is finished, now my new journey is going to start,' he told PTI Videos in an exclusive interaction. He expressed confidence in turning around the fortunes of Chennai Blitz, a team that has not reached the semifinals in recent seasons. He said, 'If I am in the team, I can assure that Chennai Blitz will not be like what it was in the last few years.' Vinith also spoke candidly about overcoming the physical and mental toll of injuries, especially his ACL injury. 'Injuries will happen for a top-level sportsperson in any sports,' he said. 'I wanted to be a sportsperson to take care of my family. So, I decided the only way to solve all the problems was to play volleyball. I can say that my family situation gave me more strength to beat my injuries,' he added. As a senior player, Vinith views his role as beyond just playing and said, 'I just give confidence and share my experience with everyone. I will try to help them give the best for the team.' Discussing how he maintains focus in high-pressure situations, Vinith explained, 'Normally, I will be aggressive on the court. But inside, I have confidence because I have practised and played many times on the court. Off the court, I have done more. So I hope that will help the team.' Vinith also reflected on the impact of PVL on Indian volleyball and said, 'After the fame started, everything changed. We get attention from social media and new trainers, and so on. We also have the opportunity to play against foreign players. So yeah, it's good for all the Indian players.'

Only way I see Jadeja getting injured is doing a rotator cuff via his celebration, says Lee

Ravindra Jadeja's trademark sword-swinging celebration has been a common sight on the cricketing field. But former Australia pacer Brett Lee has cautioned the veteran all-rounder in pulling off the celebration, saying he is at the risk of injuring his rotator cuff muscle. Jadeja amassed 516 runs in the drawn 2-2 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test series against England, including hitting five half-centuries and one hundred. 'The thing with Jadeja, the only way I see him getting injured is doing a rotator cuff with his, the way he does a sword celebration. So, I love it. Look after your body. Don't celebrate too hard,' said Lee on his YouTube channel on Sunday. Jadeja retired from T20Is after India's T20 World Cup win last year. But he continues to remain a force to reckon with in Tests and ODIs for India. Lee, the former Australian speedster went on to shower praise on Jadeja, and predicted he will go on to play 100 Test matches for India. 'Another sort of 15 Tests, it's about two years. I think he'll go past the 100 mark. I think he's one of the best all-rounders that we've seen. 36 years of age, he's still got a good couple of years left in him.' 'The term we like to use, factory-made cricketer. He has everything that a cricketer needs, and I think he ticks every single box. He does the basics right, he's got a simple technique, no fuss. He runs in and bowls accurately, he bowls the correct line and length when needed, and gets through his overs quickly.' '36 years of age, but the fittest. He's the fittest in the team, he covers a lot of ground, and he prides himself on being the fittest. That is probably the reason why he never shies away from those big moments. He likes to be in the game, he's an entertainer, and he's probably one of the factory cricketers that if you put everything into a mix, throw it into a bucket, mix all up, pick out your best cricketer, Jadeja will be at the top of the list,' he concluded.
