China and Russia start joint drills in Sea of Japan

BEIJING : China and Russia began joint naval drills in the Sea of Japan on Sunday as they seek to reinforce their partnership and counterbalance what they see as a US-led global order.
Alongside economic and political ties, Moscow and Beijing have strengthened their military cooperation in recent years, and their relations have deepened since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
The 'Joint Sea-2025' exercises kicked off in waters near the Russian port of Vladivostok and would last for three days, China's defence ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
The two sides will hold 'submarine rescue, joint anti-submarine, air defence and anti-missile operations, and maritime combat'.
Four Chinese vessels, including guided-missile destroyers Shaoxing and Urumqi, are participating in the exercises alongside Russian ships, the ministry said.
After the drills, the two countries will conduct naval patrols in 'relevant waters of the Pacific'.
China and Russia have carried out annual drills for several years, with the 'Joint Sea' exercises beginning in 2012.
Last year's drills were held along China's southern coast.
The Chinese defence ministry said Friday that this year's exercises were aimed at 'further deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership' of the two countries.
China has never denounced Russia's more than three-year war nor called for it to withdraw its troops, and many of Ukraine's allies, including the US, believe that Beijing has provided support to Moscow.
China insists it is a neutral party, regularly calling for an end to the fighting while also accusing Western countries of prolonging the conflict by arming Ukraine.

Sagah: No need to set school-leaving age at 16, focus should be on lifelong learning

Sagah speaks at the press conference. KUCHING (Aug 6): Education, Innovation and Talent Development Minister Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn has voiced his disagreement with former Economy Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's proposal for students to complete secondary school by the age of 16 to enable them to enter the workforce by 21. Speaking at a press conference after officiating the 8th Technology & Innovation International Conference (Techon) 2025 at a hotel here today, Sagah said the proposal was unnecessary and that the focus should instead be on lifelong learning. 'There's no need for that. We are promoting lifelong learning, not stopping at 16. Why should it be 16 years old? No need to talk about that — just talk about lifelong learning,' he said when asked to comment on Rafizi's remarks during the recent debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Sagah pointed out that continuous upskilling and learning were more relevant in today's rapidly evolving industries. 'We encourage people to go and learn to upskill themselves. If last time I knew how to do rubber tapping, now I have to know how to manufacture the machine that can make it even faster, so that I don't need to go and get my hands dirty anymore,' he said. 'They (Rafizi) can say whatever they like,' he added. Rafizi had suggested during the 13MP debate in Parliament that the government consider structural reforms to the education system, allowing students to finish school earlier and join the workforce by 21, citing the need to manage challenges posed by an ageing population. On the event, Sagah said events such as Techon 2025 are vital platforms for bringing together experts from various disciplines to discuss the ethical and responsible use of technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), and to align innovation with sustainability goals. He added that the conference, themed 'AI, TVET, and Renewable Energy: Driving a Sustainable Future through the Sustainable Development Goals', was organised by Politeknik Mukah with support from various agencies and associations. 'It is an international event involving institutions from Indonesia, Japan, Morocco, and India, as well as local institutions like Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM). 'Industry players and academia are also contributing their ideas, which they will deliberate during the conference,' he said. age lead rafizi ramli Roland Sagah secondary school

Trump jokes about ‘nuclear missiles' during surprise rooftop stroll at White House

WASHINGTON, Aug 6 — Donald Trump made an unexpected appearance yesterday on a White House rooftop and joked about installing nuclear missiles at a time of escalating tensions with Russia. The US president, flanked by bodyguards and under the protection of snipers, strolled for 20 minutes on the flat roof above the press room as he looked across to the site of his proposed new ballroom. Asked why he was on the roof, he replied he was just 'taking a little walk.' Quizzed about what he intended to build, he joked 'nuclear missiles,' before appearing to mimic the launch of a weapon with his arm. The United States and Russia have engaged in heated rhetoric for several days. Trump last week ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines near Russia in response to remarks he deemed provocative by former Russian president Dmitri Medvedev. With his planned ballroom and other projects, Trump is determined to leave an imprint on the White House, drawing inspiration from the opulent style of his private properties. He has paved the lawn of the famous Rose Garden and adorned the Oval Office with lavish golden ornamentation. The 79-year-old leader recently announced plans for the ballroom, in what is shaping up to be the most significant project at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in over a century. He has vowed that he—with perhaps some help from private donors—would pay for all the work, estimated at $200 million. 'It's just another way to spend my money for the country,' he said Tuesday. A former reality TV host, Trump is known for his public appearances that are half-comical, half-provocative, delighting his supporters and providing television networks with the images they relish. In 2015, he announced his presidential candidacy after slowly descending a golden escalator. And during the last presidential campaign, he staged photo ops in a garbage truck cabin and served fries in a McDonald's restaurant. — AFP

In Dewan Rakyat today: Cost of living, MLFF tolls and US tariffs take centre stage

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — Government efforts to ease the cost of living, the implementation of the Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system, and the issue of reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States on Malaysia are among the key matters scheduled for discussion in the Dewan Rakyat sitting today. According to the Order Paper published on the Parliament's website, during the question-and-answer session, Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (PN-Bukit Gantang) will ask the Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to state the measures taken by the National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) to help reduce the cost of living. Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir (PN-Setiu) will pose a question to the Works Minister on the status of MLFF toll collection implementation, besides seeking clarification on improvements to systems such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) to ensure the new system's effectiveness. Datuk Seri Dr Wee Jeck Seng (BN-Tanjung Piai) will raise a question to the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry regarding the status and effectiveness of negotiations between Malaysia and the United States on the implementation of reciprocal tariffs. He also asked for government assurances that the move would not adversely affect trade, supply chains or the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector in Malaysia. Yeo Bee Yin (PH-Puchong) will question the Minister of Youth and Sports on key improvements introduced by the ministry in the National Youth Consultative Council and the significant proposals made by youths, as well as the ministry's efforts in conveying these proposals to the government. Mohd Nazri Abu Hassan (PN-Merbok), meanwhile, will ask the Minister of Housing and Local Government whether the ministry had allocated special provisions to state governments or related agencies to manage solid waste and clean up illegal dumping sites outside the jurisdiction of local authorities. Following the question session, the Dewan Rakyat will resume the debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), which was tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Thursday. The current Dewan Rakyat sitting takes place over 24 days until August 28. — Bernama
