China and Russia start joint drills in Sea of Japan
BEIJING : China and Russia began joint naval drills in the Sea of Japan on Sunday as they seek to reinforce their partnership and counterbalance what they see as a US-led global order.
Alongside economic and political ties, Moscow and Beijing have strengthened their military cooperation in recent years, and their relations have deepened since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
The 'Joint Sea-2025' exercises kicked off in waters near the Russian port of Vladivostok and would last for three days, China's defence ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
The two sides will hold 'submarine rescue, joint anti-submarine, air defence and anti-missile operations, and maritime combat'.
Four Chinese vessels, including guided-missile destroyers Shaoxing and Urumqi, are participating in the exercises alongside Russian ships, the ministry said.
After the drills, the two countries will conduct naval patrols in 'relevant waters of the Pacific'.
China and Russia have carried out annual drills for several years, with the 'Joint Sea' exercises beginning in 2012.
Last year's drills were held along China's southern coast.
The Chinese defence ministry said Friday that this year's exercises were aimed at 'further deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership' of the two countries.
China has never denounced Russia's more than three-year war nor called for it to withdraw its troops, and many of Ukraine's allies, including the US, believe that Beijing has provided support to Moscow.
China insists it is a neutral party, regularly calling for an end to the fighting while also accusing Western countries of prolonging the conflict by arming Ukraine.

Sagah pointed out that continuous upskilling and learning were more relevant in today's rapidly evolving industries. 'We encourage people to go and learn to upskill themselves. If last time I knew how to do rubber tapping, now I have to know how to manufacture the machine that can make it even faster, so that I don't need to go and get my hands dirty anymore,' he said. 'They (Rafizi) can say whatever they like,' he added. Rafizi had suggested during the 13MP debate in Parliament that the government consider structural reforms to the education system, allowing students to finish school earlier and join the workforce by 21, citing the need to manage challenges posed by an ageing population. On the event, Sagah said events such as Techon 2025 are vital platforms for bringing together experts from various disciplines to discuss the ethical and responsible use of technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), and to align innovation with sustainability goals. He added that the conference, themed 'AI, TVET, and Renewable Energy: Driving a Sustainable Future through the Sustainable Development Goals', was organised by Politeknik Mukah with support from various agencies and associations. KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — Government efforts to ease the cost of living, the implementation of the Multi Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll system, and the issue of reciprocal tariffs imposed by the United States on Malaysia are among the key matters scheduled for discussion in the Dewan Rakyat sitting today. According to the Order Paper published on the Parliament's website, during the question-and-answer session, Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (PN-Bukit Gantang) will ask the Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to state the measures taken by the National Action Council on Cost of Living (NACCOL) to help reduce the cost of living.
