National Audit Department's Powers Expanded To Cover 1,856 GLCs

Barnama19-05-2025

KUALA LUMPUR, May 19 (Bernama) -- The amendment to the Audit Act 1957 [Act 62], which came into force last year, empowers the National Audit Department to conduct thorough audits of 1,856 government-linked companies (GLCs), said Auditor-General Datuk Seri Wan Suraya Wan Mohd Radzi.
She said the amendment expands the department's scope, thereby strengthening the government's oversight of governance and financial management within GLCs.
'This authority aligns with the amended Act 62, which extends the Auditor-General's powers to include audits of entities receiving government financial guarantees, introducing the 'follow the public money' audit approach.
'It reflects the department's strategic role in detecting and assessing accounting fraud risks more effectively and in a more targeted manner,' she said at a press conference after the launch of the Accounting Fraud Working Group today.
Wan Suraya emphasised that, moving forward, all GLCs would be held accountable for any irregularities identified in the Auditor-General's Report.
'The Auditor-General's Report Follow-Up Committee uncovered several instances of leakages through state and federal financial statements, which are now in the process of being recovered.
'In addition to the GLCs, we also audit statutory bodies. When leakages are detected, whether in the form of uncollected or unreceived revenue, we will ensure that follow-up action is taken,' she said.
She added that beyond the recovery of public funds, the audit process aims to determine whether serious irregularities, governance lapses, or systemic failures have occurred.
Meanwhile, Wan Suraya highlighted that the department is also exploring the use of emerging technologies to enhance fraud detection, in line with increasingly complex trends.

Iran Urges UN to Take Decisive Action Against Israel's Aggression

TEHRAN, June 14 (Bernama-IRNA) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has emphasised the urgent need for the United Nations (UN) to take swift action in response to Israel's acts of aggression against Iran, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported. In a telephone conversation on Friday with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Araqchi provided details about Israel's strikes on multiple sites inside Iran, including military bases, nuclear facilities, and residential buildings. He reiterated that Israel's actions represent a serious violation of Iran's sovereignty and territorial integrity as a sovereign UN member state. bootstrap slideshow The top diplomat described the strikes as an outright act of aggression, noting that the Islamic Republic preserves its right to self-defence under Article 51 of the UN Charter. Araqchi called on the UN to act immediately, in line with its duties under the UN Charter, to condemn the Israeli strikes and take necessary measures to hold the regime accountable. For his part, Guterres expressed regret and condemned the attacks, pledging to use the UN's capacity to reduce tensions and help restore peace and stability in the region. Overnight on Friday, the Israeli regime began a series of military strikes in and near the Iranian capital, Tehran, as well as other Iranian cities. In a major escalation, the Tel Aviv regime also targeted residential buildings in and near Tehran. The Israeli military also carried out targeted strikes against Iran's top military brass. Chairman of the Chiefs of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Baqeri, and Chief Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), Major General Hossein Salami, were among the senior military officials assassinated in Tehran. -- BERNAMA-IRNA

Local Fishermen Should Benefit From BDIFIP Project

BAGAN DATUK, June 14 (Bernama) -- Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for deep-sea resource harvesting licences under the Bagan Datuk International Fishery Industrial Park (BDIFIP) to be awarded to local communities, especially those from Perak. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said the Fisheries Department could work with Menteri Besar Incorporated (MB Inc) to identify potential local operators who could be granted licences under the RM2 billion project. The Bagan Datuk MP added that he would work with financial institutions to ensure eligible fishermen receive assistance or loans, thereby ensuring that the benefits of the project are shared fairly between foreign investors and the local community. 'This is how we create balance, so that Malaysians, especially those in Perak, are not left with just low-paying jobs of RM1,700, watching others benefit from the project,' he said at the BDIFIP pre-launch ceremony here today. He also expressed hope that local workers at BDIFIP would not be paid minimum wages while foreign investors offer significantly higher salaries for similar roles in their home countries. 'Do not exploit the hard work of our local youth. Fair wages must be ensured, especially for those with skills and the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM). 'I will personally monitor the progress of this industrial zone and ensure all timelines are fully met,' he said. At the event, Ahmad Zahid also witnessed the exchange of an agreement between MB Inc. Perak and Younchang Engineering & Construction (M) Sdn Bhd, as well as the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between Younchang Engineering and MingCheng Group Co Ltd, paving the way for broader international collaboration in the project's investment ecosystem. Earlier, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said the BDIFIP project, involving investments of more than RM2 billion, will be developed in phases starting in 2027 across a 126.4-hectare site. The project is expected to elevate Bagan Datuk into an international seafood trading hub. -- BERNAMA BERNAMA provides up-to-date authentic and comprehensive news and information which are disseminated via BERNAMA Wires; BERNAMA TV on Astro 502, unifi TV 631 and MYTV 121 channels and BERNAMA Radio on FM93.9 (Klang Valley), FM107.5 (Johor Bahru), FM107.9 (Kota Kinabalu) and FM100.9 (Kuching) frequencies.
