Nick Champion de Crespigny to make his Wallabies debut in opening Test against British and Irish Lions
Canberra product Champion de Crespigny, 29, only this year debuted in Super Rugby for Western Force after spending the previous three seasons playing for French Top 14 club Castres Olympique.
His inclusion, at the expense of the dropped Langi Gleeson, is one of four changes to the team that started in Australia's last-start 21-18 win over Fiji on July 6.
Coach Joe Schmidt had picked seven players with less than 15 Tests experiences, five with less than eight, and debutant de Crespigny in the starting line-up as the regeneration of the national team continues.
But key big men Will Skelton and Rob Valetini were both ruled out due to injury.
Flyhalf Tom Lynagh will replace the injured Noah Lolesio, becoming the first Wallabies player to follow in their father's footsteps in playing against the Lions after his did Michael also wore the No.10 Australian jersey against the tourists in 1989.
Lynagh will be partnered in the halves by Jake Gordon, with Tate McDermott dropping back to the bench.
The other change is at hooker, where Matt Faessler comes in for the injured David Porecki.
Ben Donaldson will be the back-up flyhalf, winning the bench spot ahead of O'Connor, who was called into Australia's extended 36-man series squad last week as the replacement of Lolesio, who had neck surgery after Australia's win over Fiji.
No.8 Harry Wilson has retained the captaincy, while veteran prop James Slipper will have the rare distinction of playing in two series against the Lions after also representing Australia against the British and Irish outfit in 2013.
Schmidt predicted a 'massive challenge' for his team.
'The whole squad has worked hard as a group to prepare for what's going to a massive challenge against an in-form Lions team,' Schmidt said.
'With the short runway leading up to such a big Test match, we know we must adapt fast and improve quickly, from the performance we had against Fiji recently.
'We're very much aware of the occasion and conscious of earning the support from the public through the effort they see on the field.'

Australia given Commonwealth Games boots with Gout Gout intending to compete in Glasgow
Australia's chef de mission for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games has expressed her excitement that athletes want to compete next year in Scotland following Gout Gout's announced intention to race. Gout had initially been expected to prioritise the August 5-9 world junior titles in the United States, where he wants to emulate the great Usain Bolt, who won the under-20 200-metre title back in 2002. But Gout is now set to contest the Commonwealth 100m event in Glasgow, before heading to the US for the 200m at the world juniors. Petria Thomas, Australia's Glasgow 2026 chef de mission, told ABC Sport: "It's very exciting when our best athletes publicly announce their intention to be at the Games." "There is of course qualification processes that all of our athletes will need to go through, a lot can happen in the year leading into a Games," Thomas said. "It's really exciting that the athletes are saying they want to compete in the Games and we're looking forward to having our best athletes possible on our team ready to go in a year's time." Gout is in line to do something Bolt never did by running as an individual at the Commonwealth Games. The Jamaican legend was part of his country's gold medal-winning 4x100m men's relay team at Glasgow 2014. Gout's participation will further boost Australia's hopes of again topping the medal tally, which it has done in eight of the last nine Games dating back to 1990. Glasgow's pared-down Games will feature 10 sports, nine less than in 2022 in Birmingham. Sports which Australia has traditionally dominated such as hockey, rugby sevens and diving have been axed from the games. But 82 per cent of the nation's medal events in Birmingham 2022 remain on the Glasgow program. Commonwealth Games Australia boss Craig Phillips told AAP that despite the condensed program, Australia still has ambitions to stay atop the medal tally in Scotland. "We have ambitions to remain top of the medal tally, which is a stated ambition of ours all the time," Phillips said. "We really think that our athletes can do that. Western Bulldogs great Marcus Bontempelli says a second premiership 'won't define' the calibre of his career. Bontempelli extended his stay at Whitten Oval for a further four years this week, prolonging a career that was crowned the club's second greatest on Monday night. The six-time All Australian and six-time best and fairest winner hasn't tasted the ultimate success since his third-season premiership in 2016. While it still remains his goal, Bontempelli says he won't let it shape the narrative of his career. 'I haven't yet but over the course over the rest of my career that is clearly something I am chasing,' Bontempelli, 29, said. 'It won't define my career if we can't but ultimately, I was lucky enough to be involved in the first one for a very long time in the men's program.' Bontempelli produced a stirring grand final performance in 2021, collecting 25 disposals and kicking three goals in a losing cause. He notably put the Bulldogs three goals up in the third quarter before Melbourne kicked 16 of the next 17 goals. Bontempelli says losing a grand final only whets the appetite to win another one. 'Having played in a losing one, I should say, and the heartbreak and pain that goes with that, it's clearly what we're all trying to achieve,' he said. 'It would make things pretty special but it won't define this next phase of my career. It would be more about what I can either teach or pass on the younger guys.' The Bulldogs are in danger of missing the finals this year despite having a favourable run home. They've slumped to a win behind Gold Coast, which has a game in hand, by repeatedly failing against top-eight sides. Bontempelli says the deficiency costing Western Bulldogs in these top-eight battles is clear for 'every man and his dog' to see. 'It's clearly the defensive side of the game where we really need to tighten up. We've shown throughout the year we're a capable scoring team,' he said. 'We've got plenty of guys, especially in the front half, who can contribute and hit the scoreboard. 'On the way back we haven't been able to slow teams down enough and it's been a lesson we've probably got on too many occasions this year. 'That's probably where we're focused on. I think every man and his dog knows that if you look at our team and the numbers around our game. 'It's critical we do because it is down to that point of the season where we can't afford to drop really any more games if we're to give ourselves the best chance.'
