‘Call it a funeral': Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte roast USA Swimming's performance at World Championships with meme
Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte have roasted USA Swimming's performance at the ongoing Swimming World Championships in Singapore by posting a meme of a funeral. USA are currently third in the Aquatics World Championship medals table with just six golds out of 23 medals. The medals table is led by China, who have claimed a whopping 14 golds in their tally of 31 medals. Australia are second in the standings with nine golds and 20 medals overall. This is worrying news for USA, who are hosting the next Olympics at Los Angeles in 2028, who have been a giant in the pool. But in recent years, this domination has started to wane. The Americans were underwhelming at the Paris Olympics last year where they led the medals table, but won only eight gold medals, the lowest total since the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Coming into the World Championships in Singapore, Team USA has been battling a case of 'acute gastroenteritis', which was picked up at training camp in Thailand. While the official number of athletes affected by the issue was not released by USOPC, it seems to have had an effect on results. But outside the pool too, there are issues for USA Swimming, with the American governing body for swimming not having a CEO for a year now. Tim Hinchey resigned as the CEO a year ago. He was replaced by Chrissi Rawak, who stepped down after just a few days. This under-par performance in Singapore has not gone too well with American swimming legends like Phelps and Lochte, who have taken to Instagram to make their displeasure known. It was six-time Olympic gold medallist Lochte who initially shared a meme on his Instagram Stories on Friday depicting a funeral where a tombstone was inscribed with the words: 'In loving memory of United States Swimming.' 'They set the bar high — until they stopped reaching for it,' the inscription also said. To this, Lochte added the caption: 'Call it a funeral or call it a fresh start. We've got 3 years.' Phelps too shared the meme on his Instagram handle with the caption: 'Is this the wake-up call USA swimming needed?' Rowdy Gaines, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, also did not mince words when he spoke to The Associated Press. Gaines called the body 'rudderless.' 'Can you imagine any corporation going for a year without a CEO?' Gaines asked. 'We're far from killing it. It's a major struggle and we can't hide our heads in the sand and say this is just a blip.' Sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson arrested for incident at Washington airport involving boyfriend
Reigning 100-meter world champion Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. Richardson was arrested Sunday on a fourth degree domestic violence offense, according to the police report obtained by The Associated Press. On Thursday, she ran in the opening round the women's 100 meters at U.S. track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. She has an automatic bye to the world championships in September in Tokyo as the defending champion. The 25-year-old Richardson was booked into the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, at 6:54 p.m. last Sunday and released Monday at 1:13 p.m. "USATF is aware of the reports and is not commenting on this matter," USA Track and Field said in a statement. Richardson's agent did not immediately reply to an email request for comment. The police report said an officer at the airport was notified by a Transportation Security Administration supervisor of a disturbance between Richardson and her boyfriend, sprinter Christian Coleman. The officer reviewed camera footage and observed Richardson reach out with her left arm and grab Coleman's backpack and yank it away. Richardson then appeared to get in Coleman's way with Coleman trying to step around her. Coleman was shoved into a wall. The report later said that Richardson appeared to throw an item at Coleman, which the TSA indicated may have been headphones. In the police report, the officer said: "I was told Coleman did not want to participate any further in the investigation and declined to be a victim." Richardson won the 100 at the 2023 world championships in Budapest and finished with the silver at the Paris Games last summer. She also helped the 4x100 relay to an Olympic gold. She had a positive positive marijuana test at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials and didn't compete at the Tokyo Olympics.

Olympic star Sha'Carri Richardson arrested for alleged domestic assault on boyfriend Christian Coleman, but he refuses to press charges
Olympic sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson is making headlines again, but not for her speed on the track. The 25-year-old was arrested on Sunday, July 27, at Seattle, Tacoma International Airport after a public altercation with boyfriend and fellow track star Christian Coleman allegedly turned physical. From track to trouble at the terminal According to multiple reports, Richardson and Coleman got into a heated verbal spat as they exited TSA security. A police officer at the scene claimed to have witnessed Richardson repeatedly push Coleman until he fell into a nearby column. Airport surveillance footage allegedly supports this account, showing Coleman trying to walk away while Richardson continued to bump into him, and at one point, threw a pair of headphones in his direction. Coleman refuses to press charges Despite the scene that unfolded, Coleman reportedly declined to press charges and stated he did not want to be considered a victim. However, that did not stop authorities from detaining Richardson, who was booked at the South Correctional Entity in Des Moines, Washington, that same day. Jail records confirm she was released on Monday, July 28. USA Track and Field (USATF) acknowledged the reports but chose to remain silent on the matter, offering no official comment. Just days after the arrest, Richardson was back on the track for the USATF Outdoor Championships. She competed in the 100-meter preliminary round on Thursday, July 31, where she impressively finished second in her heat with a time of 11.07 seconds, earning her a spot in the semi-finals. But the drama off-track seemed to linger. On Friday, August 1, Richardson withdrew from the semi-finals and also pulled out of the 200-meter race. Still, she holds an automatic bid for the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo as the reigning world champion in the 100 meters. From Olympic glory to legal woes Just weeks ago, Richardson was riding high, taking home silver in the 100 meters and gold in the women's 4×100-meter relay at the 2024 Paris Olympics. The arrest casts a shadow on her rising legacy, sparking questions about how personal turbulence may affect her professional future.
