Game notes and more
With just two games left, the organization won't admit it, but there is likely a focus on the Wizards team making sure it gets to the worst record in the league, so that they can, not only maintain their odds of getting a #1 pick, but also to ensure even if they don't get a #1 pick, that they can at worst get a #4 pick in the draft. Simply put, there is not much incentive for the Wizards to win right now, so expect this game to be littered with young bench players getting plenty of opportunity to make an impression to stay on the roster for the future.
As for the Bulls, they are only .5 game out from the 8th seed going into Thursday. Seeding for next week's Play-In Tournament will be critical because at least with the 8th seed they get two shots at getting a playoff spot, but staying at the 9th seed, means they can be eliminated from playoff contention if they lose their first Play-In game. Plenty for Chicago to gain, so expect them to try to put the Wizards away early.

Bulls could explore trade market for underwhelming $90 million forward

Bulls could explore trade market for underwhelming $90 million forward originally appeared on The Sporting News The Chicago Bulls have had a fairly quiet offseason amid contract talks with restricted free agent Josh Giddey. The club re-signed Tre Jones and traded Lonzo Ball for Isaac Okoro, but the main storyline has been securing a new deal for Giddey. With Okoro joining youngsters Matas Buzelis and Noa Essengue at the forward spots, it appears as though Patrick Williams may be the odd man out. According to Brett Siegel of the Bulls could look to move the former No. 4 overall pick after an underwhelming start to his career. 'Noise surrounding Patrick Williams will rise before this season's trade deadline,' Siegel wrote. 'The Bulls are focused on Matas Buzelis, Noa Essengue, and now Isaac Okoro on the wing, which makes Williams very expendable.' MORE: NBA writer pushes for middle ground in Josh Giddey contract talks Williams signed a five-year, $90 million extension last June, which includes a player option for the 2028-29 campaign. His sizable long-term deal could make him more difficult to move, though a strong start to next season might boost his trade value. Still only 23 years old, the Florida State product has potential, but he's been disappointing for the rebuilding Bulls. Last season, he averaged just 9.0 points, 3.8 rebounds and 2.0 assists across 25.0 minutes per game in 63 regular-season appearances, shooting a career-worst 39.7 percent from the field. Williams began last season as a starter but eventually shifted to a bench role, which is a trend that'll likely continue. With other promising young options emerging, it wouldn't be surprising if Chicago explores trade scenarios for him. Bulls rookie Noa Essengue explains why he'll wear No. 24 in the NBA

After wearing No. 12 for much of his basketball career, rookie Noa Essengue will have a new jersey number when he debuts next season with the Chicago Bulls. Essengue donned No. 12 while playing with ratiopharm Ulm last season in the German League. He also had that number while representing France on the international level, most recently in the 2024 FIBA U18 EuroBasket Championship. With veteran Zach Collins currently occupying No. 12, Essengue opted to double that number and wear No. 24 with the Bulls. He is also paying homage to Hall of Famer Kobe Bryant, who wore it over the second half of his career with the Los Angeles Lakers. Essengue was the 12th pick after averaging 10.7 points, five rebounds and 1.2 assists on 52.1% shooting from the field in 60 games last season. He has registered seven 20-point games, including a 22-point, 14-rebound performance on June 1. The Frenchman debuted with the Bulls in the NBA Summer League, averaging 12.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals on 41.9% shooting from the field in three appearances. He finished off his stay with a 21-point performance on July 14. Essengue was highly touted as a prospect this year because of his size, rebounding and defensive versatility. The team is excited about his addition and is eager to watch him take the court next season. Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA.
