
Fact check: Shipped liquid gas is more carbon intensive than UK gas
In Parliament an MP said that importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) has net emissions which are up to four times higher than those for North Sea gas.
'I remind the House that, for example, importing liquefied natural gas involves cooling gas to 160 degrees below zero, shipping it thousands of miles from Qatar and regasifying it at a port in this country,' he said.
'The net emissions are up to four times higher than those from North Sea gas.'
Evaluation
This only measures the emissions from the production and transport of liquefied natural gas.
These production and transport emissions are around four times higher than those from domestically produced gas, according to an official report.
However more significant emissions come from burning the gas. If this is taken into account then carbon emissions from LNG are only around 17% higher than those from domestic gas.
The facts
As was said in Parliament, LNG needs to be chilled until it is in liquid form, then put on a ship and transported from the country of origin to the final place where it is to be used.
This is a much more energy-intensive process, so leads to considerably higher emissions.
A report from the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) found that 'the average carbon intensity of imported Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is almost four times the carbon intensity of UK production'.
But that report only measures emissions from the production and transport of the gas, not from its combustion, which is the main source of emissions from gas.
To find the full difference in emissions between LNG and British gas, one must therefore add the emissions that are produced when the gas is burned by the end user.
The International Energy Agency says that natural gas combustion results in 320 kilograms (kg) of carbon dioxide (CO2) per barrel of oil equivalent (boe).
The NSTA report found that the transport and production emissions for domestic gas was 21 kg of CO2 per boe, and for LNG it was 79 kg.
So the total CO2 emissions for transport, production and combustion of domestic gas would be 341 kg per boe, compared with 399 kg for LNG.
That means that emissions for LNG are 17% higher.

Sen. Cory Booker says he won't accept campaign donations from Elon Musk
Sen. Cory Booker on Sunday said that he would not accept campaign donations from tech mogul Elon Musk but urged the former Trump advisor to "get involved right now in a more substantive way" in Democrats' push against the sweeping GOP-backed spending bill. "This bill is disastrous for our long-term economy," Booker told NBC News' "Meet the Press." "This is an American issue, and I welcome Elon Musk not to my campaign. I welcome him right now, not to sit back and just fire off tweets, get involved right now in a more substantive way, in putting pressure on Congress people and senators to not do this." Asked directly whether he would ever accept campaign funding from Musk, Booker said, "I would not accept money from Elon Musk for my campaign, but I would be supportive of anybody, including Elon Musk, putting resources forward right now to let more Americans know," about the bill. Booker's remarks come as other Democrats, like California Rep. Ro Khanna, have floated welcoming Musk into the Democratic party after a feud between President Donald Trump and the Tesla and SpaceX CEO exploded into public view last week. "We should ultimately be trying to convince him that the Democratic Party has more of the values that he agrees with,' Khanna told Politico last week after Musk and Trump fired off a series of social media posts online criticizing each other. The falling out started after Musk called the budget bill a "disgusting abomniation" in a post on X. In subsequent posts on Truth Social, the president accused Musk of "wearing thin" and said "he just went crazy." Musk later accused Trump of " ingratitude" in another post on X after he spent $250 million boosting Trump's campaign in 2024 and accused Trump of links to deceased sex offender Jeff Epstein in a now-deleted post. On Saturday, in a phone call with NBC News, Trump said he has no desire to repair his relationship with Musk after their public spat. The president also responded to a direct question about what might happen if Musk decided to financially support Democrats in the 2026 midterm elections, days after Musk wrote in a post on X,"In November next year, we fire all politicians who betrayed the American people," appearing to refer to Republicans who voted for the GOP-backed spending bill in the House. 'If he does, he'll have to pay the consequences for that,' Trump told NBC News, adding that there could be "serious consequences." In May, House Republicans passed a sweeping domestic policy bill called the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act" that extends tax cuts passed in the first Trump administration, increases funding for border security and eliminates federal taxes on tips and overtime pay. The bill has also drawn scrutiny from Democrats for slashing funding for Medicaid and some food stamps while implementing work requirements for Medicaid, which provides healthcare for low income Americans. Musk and some Senate Republicans have blasted the bill for estimated effects it could have on the federal debt and deficit, though Trump and House Republicans have downplayed those concerns. "More Americans have to understand that if this bill passes, average Americans are going to see their costs skyrocket as this president again pushes legislation that is indicative of his chaos, corruption and cruelty towards Americans," Booker said on Sunday.

British ‘service person' arrested in Kenya over rape allegation
The alleged rape happened last month close to the British Army Training Unit Kenya (Batuk), near the town Nanyuki, and the man was arrested after a group of soldiers visited a bar in the area, the BBC reports. It comes after the body of 21-year-old Agnes Wanjiru, who was allegedly murdered by a British soldier, was found in a septic tank at a Kenyan hotel, close to a British Army base, two months after she disappeared in March 2012. On Sunday, a Ministry of Defence spokesman said: 'We can confirm the arrest of a service person in Kenya. 'As the matter is the subject of an ongoing investigation by the Defence Serious Crime Command, we will not comment further.' The rape allegations come after Defence Secretary John Healey met Ms Wanjiru's family in April. They said they had been subject to 'too many empty promises' regarding investigations into her death and that they were 'grateful' for the visit. According to the Sunday Times, a soldier had allegedly confessed to Ms Wanjiru's killing and another soldier reported it to senior officers at the time – but no action was taken. Defence Secretary John Healey recently met with the family of Agnes Wanjiru, who was found dead in Kenya in 2012 (PA) In a report in 2021, the newspaper said a soldier accused of the murder had been named by his comrades. In April, Mr Healey said the Government would continue to help Ms Wanjiru's family 'secure the justice they deserve', and stressed his 'determination to see a resolution to the still unresolved case'. The Army has launched a service inquiry (SI) into allegations of unacceptable behaviour by UK service personnel in Kenya violating sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) policy which was introduced in July 2022. It is believed the aim is to understand the nature of allegations made regarding sexual exploitation and abuse, which includes Army culture and possible contact with sex workers. The SI can make recommendations to ensure that SEA policy is being complied with by UK personnel in Kenya. A MoD spokesman said: 'The Defence Secretary recently visited Kenya to highlight our bilateral partnership and the important role of the British military presence – and personnel – in Kenya. He also clearly set out the high standards of behaviour we expect of our all our personnel. 'All soldiers who visit or train at Batuk have clear direction about how to behave, on and off duty, must complete mandatory training and attend compulsory briefings on conduct. We will have zero tolerance for unacceptable behaviour. 'To ensure the highest possible standards, the Army has launched a comprehensive service inquiry into allegations of unacceptable behaviour by UK Service Personnel in Kenya which would violate MoD and Army policy.'
