'Fake' beauty brand and Rs 40-crore case: Instagram star with 1.2 million followers in ED custody over money laundering probe

An influencer and self-described actor with over 1.2 million followers on Instagram, Sandeepa Virk , has been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a Rs 40-crore money laundering case, PTI reported. Virk is accused of defrauding individuals by soliciting funds under false pretences and misrepresentation. The ED carried out search operations on Tuesday and Wednesday at multiple locations in Delhi and Mumbai in connection with the case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Play War Thunder now for free War Thunder Play Now According to the ED, Virk allegedly acquired immovable properties through fraudulent means. She promoted herself as the owner of a website claiming to sell FDA-approved beauty products . Investigators found that the products did not exist, the website lacked user registration features, faced persistent payment gateway failures, and had negligible social media engagement. Furthermore, its WhatsApp contact number was inactive, and no transparent company details were available, suggesting a non-genuine commercial operation allegedly used as a front for laundering funds. Live Events The ED's probe also revealed Virk's alleged links with Angarai Natarajan Sethuraman, a former director of the now-defunct Reliance Capital Limited . Searches at Sethuraman's residence allegedly confirmed involvement in 'illegal liaising work' and diversion of funds for personal gain. Investigators said that in 2018, public funds worth approximately Rs 18 crore from Reliance Commercial Finance Ltd (RCFL) were disbursed to Sethuraman without due diligence and under irregular lending terms that allowed deferments and multiple waivers. In addition, a Rs 22-crore home loan was allegedly sanctioned by Reliance Capital Limited in violation of prudential norms. Large portions of these funds were reportedly siphoned off and remain unpaid. In a statement to PTI, Sethuraman denied the allegations, calling them 'baseless,' and refuted any connection with Virk or any transactions related to her. During the raids, the ED seized incriminating documents and recorded statements of several key individuals, including one Farrukh Ali. Virk was arrested on 12 August under provisions of the PMLA and produced before a court, which sent her to ED custody until Friday. ED officials stated that the potential involvement of other individuals is also under investigation. Inputs from PTI

Gujarat teen who scored 478 in NEET allegedly strangled by family over boyfriend and independence

An 18-year-old from Banaskantha in Gujarat, who had cleared NEET, was allegedly murdered by her father and uncle in a suspected 'honour killing' after they discovered she was living with her boyfriend, according to the FIR registered by police on the partner's complaint. Independence Day 2025 Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji gave India its own currency Swadeshi 2.0: India is no longer just a market, it's a maker The teenager, Chandrika Chaudhary, had scored 478 marks in her NEET exam, making her eligible for admission to a government medical college. While she wished to continue her studies and live independently, her family of farmers reportedly disapproved. According to police, Chandrika was allegedly given milk laced with sedatives by her father, Sendha Chaudhary, and then strangled along with her uncle, Shivram, using a dupatta on 25 June. Her body was reportedly hurriedly cremated. Police officials quoted Shivram as telling villagers that Chandrika had suffered a heart attack. While Shivram is in custody, Sendha is still at large. Murder Occurred Days Before Habeas Corpus Petition According to Haresh Chaudhary, Chandrika's partner, Shivram had visited colleges and observed boys and girls studying together. He reportedly told Chandrika's father that she should not be sent there as she might fall in love with a boy and marry him. Chandrika was allegedly cut off from social media, had her phone confiscated, and was forced to focus solely on household chores. Chandrika's murder allegedly took place just days before the Gujarat High Court was scheduled to hear a habeas corpus petition filed by Haresh, which eventually exposed what authorities are calling a 'premeditated' killing. The couple had first met in February this year. Live Events Police officials stated that Chandrika's family declared the cause of death as a heart attack and cremated the body without performing a postmortem. Haresh told police that Chandrika's last words before being offered the milk were: 'Have milk and rest well. Sleep well.' According to Haresh, the couple had signed a 'live-in agreement' just two weeks before Chandrika was killed. 'She wanted to study medicine. We were not harming anyone. We just wanted to live peacefully,' he said. Inputs from TOI
