Pope Leo exhorts crowd of million Catholic youth to spread their faith
ROME (Reuters) -Pope Leo celebrated the largest event yet of his nearly three-month tenure on Sunday, encouraging a crowd of more than a million Catholic young people gathered in a field on the outskirts of Rome to spread their faith.
Amid shouts of "Viva il Papa" (Long live the Pope) from young people dressed in colourful t-shirts and waving national flags at the Tor Vergata field, Leo led a Mass that capped a special week of events meant to energise Catholic youth.
"Dear young people ... spread your enthusiasm and the witness of your faith to everyone you meet," the pope said during his sermon for the event, which also urged them not to focus on gaining material possessions but on helping those in need.
"Buying, hoarding and consuming are not enough," said Leo. "We need ... to realise that everything in the world has meaning only insofar as it serves to unite us to God and to our brothers and sisters."
Many of the youths attending the event spent the night outside in the field, to be ready for the pope's arrival at 7:45 a.m. (0545 GMT) in advance of heat expected to reach 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) later on Sunday.
"It's amazing to see just how big the world church is, and how many people are here ... and (are) on fire to see the pope," said Rita Piendl, 19, who came from Germany.
"We want to truly spread hope and love to the world and we really want to make a difference for the better."
The Catholic Church, which numbers more than 1.4 billion members globally, has grown slightly in recent years but has experienced sliding adherence in Europe.
Sunday's Mass was part of a week-long series of events in Rome for Catholic youth, tied to the ongoing Catholic Holy Year.
Leo, the first U.S.-born pope, was elected on May 8 by the world's cardinals to replace the late Pope Francis.

Fr Arthur John, priest-in-charge of the Paitan Mission, was present for the election and then commissioned the newly established committee during the Mass. Preceding the formation of the committee was a three-day recollection, which was attended by 25 Sunday School catechists from various chapels under the Paitan Mission. Held on Jun 20-22, the recollection took the theme 'Equipped to be better stewards' (1 Pet 4:10-11). The first ever recollection held for those involved in catechetical ministry in various chapels served as spiritual enrichment as well as a formation session for the Sunday School catechists. It also marked the new beginning for a better pastoral structure for the catechetical ministry in the mission district. The recollection, facilitated by the catechetical team from the parish of St Martin Telupid, started on Jun 20 with a Eucharistic celebration presided over by Fr Arthur John. It was followed by a talk delivered by Sr Rose, FSIC, elaborating on the theme. In her session, Sr Rose highlighted that to be a catechist, one must start with being a steward who strives for quality prescribed by the Word of God. Other elements for a good steward are a prayerful life, care for others, humility, self-discipline, motivation, integrity, and readiness to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. The second talk was delivered by Linus, entitled 'Baptized and Sent.' Among others, he stressed that every catechist is specifically called to respond to the baptismal mandate, that is, to belong to Christ and be sent to a community as a witness of faith, bringing the light of Christ to the society. A catechist must strive to unite himself to the Church hierarchy, not just as a mere follower, but as an active promoter and actor of the Word of God. Shaping the mind to embrace the catechetical ministry in Paitan Mission, Sr Rose, through the session 'Vocation and roles as catechist in Paitan Mission,' she elaborated the roles and responsibilities of the members of the catechetical committee. She explained that catechists are the carrier-messengers who are responsible for passing on the seed of faith through catechesis. As such, they must strive to equip themselves intellectually and spiritually through various channels, such as faith formation programs, retreats, and recollection days. The last talk, 'Christ, our mission,' was delivered by Catechist Nora. Among others, she reminded the participants to focus persistently on Christ in their ministry. Going further, she said that as a carrier of the mission of Christ, one must be a witness not only in the ministry but also in personal daily life. Apart from the formative talks, the program was filled with spiritual activities such as devotional prayers, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, daily Mass, spiritual conversation, and songs of worship sessions. The first-ever elected catechetical committee for Paitan Mission is headed by Louissa G. Sundang as coordinator, Rohana Jelum as the assistant coordinator, and Sutianah Jair as the secretary, assisted by Diwah Kabag and Helminah Nadu as the treasurer, assisted by Ruyah Tumpung. Commissioning the new committee members, Fr Arthur in his homily said, 'God did not call those who are perfect, but those who are ready to carry the cross. Just like the gospel reading, all of us have those five loaves and two fishes. 'What a great gift from the Lord, one month after my priestly ordination, to be able to greet the pope. The Holy Father encouraged me to be faithful and not to lose the joy of the priesthood in prayer,' Tovar wrote on Aug. 7 on X. Tovar said that after telling the pope he had been ordained very recently, Pope Leo XIV told him: 'Be faithful. Many priests lose their joy. Never lose the joy of the priesthood, which you will always find through prayer.' Upon learning that Tovar's parents had accompanied him to Rome, Leo XIV replied: 'Are they [over] there? Tell them to come!' Tovar wrote that the pope 'congratulated them for giving their 24-year-old son to the Church.' The pontiff also said that he is familiar with Murcia, the region in which Tovar lives, and that he is praying for the young man from Murcia who was recently hospitalized in Rome. He then blessed the priest and his parents as well as the stole conferred at Tovar's diaconal ordination. Tovar's journey to the priesthood In an interview published days before his ordination, Tovar said: 'When the Lord calls you, the fear can rise up that God is going to take everything away from you. But it's quite the opposite. Over these years, I've seen that when you give your life to God, he gives you everything.' Born in Torrealta, a small town in Murcia, Tovar grew up in a happy, Christian home with his parents, twin brother, and older sister. In the interview, the priest shared that he felt God's calling at age 13, but it wasn't until he was 18, in 2019, that he finally entered the St. Fulgentius Major Seminary. [UPDATED] 6.1 quake hits western Turkiye, one dead, 29 injured
ANKARA: A 6.1-magnitude quake struck Sindirgi in western Turkiye on Sunday, the Turkish disaster management agency (AFAD) said, killing at least one person and injuring dozens more. The quake was felt across several cities in the west of the country, including Istanbul and the tourist hotspot of Izmir. "An 81-year-old person died soon after having been rescued from under the rubble," Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told journalists at Sindirgi, the epicentre of the quake. Another 29 people had been injured, but not seriously, he added. The quake collapsed 16 buildings in Sindirgi and its surroundings, of which four were inhabited, including a three-storey building in the city centre, he said. Several people were pulled alive from the rubble of the three-storey building, where six people were living. The person who died had also been buried under the rubble there before being freed. Earlier, Mayor Serkan Sak had told Turkish private channel NTV: "Four were rescued from the rubble." Efforts to extract two others were ongoing, he added. Some 319 first responders were deployed to the affected zone, AFAD said. The quake hit at 7.53pm (1653 GMT), with some 20 aftershocks ranging from 3.5 to 4.6 magnitude, according to AFAD. Turkiye is crisscrossed by several geological fault lines which have previously caused catastrophes in the country. A quake in February 2023 in the southwest killed at least 53,000 people and devastated Antakya, site of the ancient city of Antioch. At the beginning of July, a 5.8-magnitude tremor in the same region resulted in one death and injured 69 people. -AFP
