Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé has been hospitalized "to treat an acute case of gastroenteritis," the club announced Thursday.
Mbappé will "undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment,' the team said.
The French World Cup champion was dealing with a fever, the club said earlier this week. He did not practice Tuesday and did not play Wednesday in Real Madrid's 1-1 draw against Al-Hilal in the FIFA Club World Cup at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The latest update casts doubt on whether Mbappé will be able to participate in the Club World Cup. He is undoubtedly the biggest star in the tournament outside of Argentine World Cup champion Lionel Messi.
"I don't know if he will be back for the next game. We'll see. He wasn't doing well in the last two days. He's sick,' Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said after the draw Wednesday, before Mbappé was hospitalized.
Alonso said Mbappé was "feeling a bit better, but not fully fit," during a press conference Tuesday.
"We thought it was not best for him to go to the training session. We'll see how he evolves," Alonso said of Mbappé, a day before the Al-Hilal match. "We're going to be waiting for him until the last minute."
Real Madrid has two matches remaining in the Club World Cup group stage. They will meet CF Pachuca (Mexico) on June 22 at 3 p.m. ET inside Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C., then face FC Salzburg (Austria) June 26 at 9 p.m. ET inside Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
FC Salzburg sits atop the Club World Cup Group H standings with three points after beating Pachuca 2-1 Wednesday. Real Madrid and Al-Hilal each have a point after their draw, while Pachuca has zero points after the first match for each club.

Xabi Alonso provides concerning Kylian Mbappé update after Real Madrid's draw with Al-Hilal

Xabi Alonso provides concerning Kylian Mbappé update after Real Madrid's draw with Al-Hilal Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso has provided an update on the wellbeing of star attacker Kylian Mbappé. This comes after the Frenchman was forced to sit out Los Blancos' meeting with Al-Hilal on Wednesday night. Advertisement Real Madrid got their campaign at the Club World Cup up-and-running yesterday evening. After making the trip to the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, the capital giants were forced to settle for a disappointing share of the spoils, owing to a 1-1 draw. The aforementioned Mbappé, for his part, was sorely missed by his teammates, who at times lacked a cutting edge in the final third. The 26-year-old was ruled out of the fixture after being struck down by a bout of illness this week. Speaking to the media on the back of the full-time whistle in Florida, the subject of Mbappé's wellbeing was, in turn, put to manager Xabi Alonso. And the Spanish tactician went on to admit: 'I don't know if Mbappé will be back for the next game. We'll see. He wasn't doing well in the last two days. He's sick.' Conor Laird – GSFN

Man City fined more than $1 million for repeatedly delaying Premier League kickoff times

Manchester City was fined more than one million pounds ($1.35 million) by the Premier League on Thursday for repeatedly delaying kickoff times 'without good reason' last season. City, managed by Pep Guardiola, admitted to nine breaches of league rules related to kickoffs and re-starts after halftime and has apologized. The most dominant team in English soccer over the past decade was handed fines for each breach, amounting to 1.08 million pounds ($1.45 million). The biggest individual fine was 210,000 pounds ($283,000) for a delay of 2 minutes, 22 seconds at the start of the second half against Ipswich on Jan. 19. 'Rules relating to kickoffs and re-starts help ensure the organization of the competition is set at the highest possible professional standard and provides certainty to fans and participating clubs,' the Premier League said in a statement. 'It also ensures the broadcast of every Premier League match is kept to schedule.' City, currently in the U.S. for the Club World Cup, delayed kickoffs for the start of both halves in a match against Manchester United in December. The start of the second half was delayed 2 minutes, 24 seconds — the longest of all the breaches. Last year, City was fined 2.09 million pounds ($2.8 million) for 22 breaches of the same rule over the previous two seasons. City is still waiting on the outcome of a hearing into more than 100 charges of alleged financial breaches over a nine-year period. The hearing began in September last year after charges were made in February 2023. ___ ___

Palmeiras benefits from own goal, López scores for 2-0 defeat of Al-Ahly in Club World Cup

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Palmeiras benefited from an own goal by Al-Ahly's Wessam Abou Ali and secured a 2-0 win on a shot by José López before thunderstorms stalled play in the Club World Cup match at Met Life Stadium on Thursday. Both the Brazilian Palmeiras and Egyptian Al-Ahly clubs had opportunities after the restart from a 30-minute weather delay, but Al-Ahly could not overcome its defensive struggles. Abou Ali headed the ball into his own net just minutes into the second half. The goal started an offensive surge for Palmeiras, which broke away in the 59th minute for López's goal. He kicked a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom right corner, with an assist from Maurício. Weather delayed the match a couple of minutes later. The approximately 35,000 fans in attendance were ordered to take shelter before they returned to their seats for the restart. Four yellow cards were handed out in the first half. Palmeiras' Raphael Veiga received a red in the 38th minute, but it was downgraded to yellow following a VAR check. Agustin Giay was also called for a yellow. Yahya Attiat Allah and Hamdy Fathy received cards for Al-Ahly. López's break-away goal ensured the win for the Brazilian team. Takeaways Palmeiras now sits at the top of the Group A standings with four points. Al-Ahly remains in third place with one point. Palmeiras will face Inter Miami at Hard Rock Stadium in Florida and Al-Ahly plays Porto at MetLife on Monday night. ___
