Strong public-private partnerships: Midland breaks ground on new soccer complex

Yahoo13-02-2025

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- City leaders in Midland broke ground Wednesday on the construction of a new soccer complex at Beal Park.
The ExxonMobil Soccer Complex at Beal Park will feature 62 fields of various sizes, as well as a splash park and other amenities. Its construction will allow Midland to host soccer tournaments, keep Midland Soccer Association games at one site and provide a signature park in southwest Midland.
'Sports tourism really has a huge economic impact on the City of Midland. When we start looking at the large-scale tournaments that come in for soccer, with the Turkey Shootout every year, with some of the baseball tournaments that are held in other fields and other parks in town, this really becomes a significant influx of cash into our community through hotel-motel tax dollars, through taxes paid in our stores and our restaurants. And so, this is an economic driver, and it offsets the cost to the community so that the property taxpayers are not feeling the full burden,' said Mayor Lori Blong.
City officials have stated that the 'current budget' for the Beal Park transformation is $44.5 million. That includes $28 million from the City of Midland, $10 million from the Beal Foundation, $5 million from the Scharbauer Foundation for the development of a splash park and $1.5 from ExxonMobil. The funding is a shining example of what can be accomplished though strong public-private partnerships.
Phase 1 of the renovation project is expected to be completed at the end of 2025. The first phase of the construction will also include clearing and grubbing of the mesquite in the park, and the addition of irrigation and seeding to create large grass areas.
Plans for Phases 2 and 3 have just started and should be complete at the end of July 2025. Phase 2 is scheduled to begin in early 2026, with completion expected at the end of 2027. Phase 3 will begin in early 2028, with completion expected in September 2028.
At completion, an addition of 62 soccer fields of various sizes will be available, as well as additional restrooms and parking. Four of the new fields will have an artificial turf surface. New lighting and irrigation will be installed in the grass fields.

Texas Tech softball is revamping its roster, adding more pitching and power

LUBBOCK, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – After coming within one game of winning their first national title, the Texas Tech Red Raiders have added some firepower to the roster, bringing in four out of the top-10 transfers available. The first one being UCLA's Kaitlyn Terry, a two-way player who tallied 35 hits and 30 runs last season while also posting a 20-5 record, 2.64 ERA, and 172 strikeouts. A much-needed addition that will help take the load off of Nijaree Canady. Next up is Tennessee's Taylor Pannell, an All-American redshirt sophomore who held a 1.240 OPS, a .398 batting average, 74 hits, 34 walks, 16 homers, and 65 RBI for the Lady Vols last season. Mia Williams will also head to Lubbock after transferring from Florida. Daughter of former NBA champion Jason Williams, the second baseman posted a 1.144 OPS, 61 hits, 52 runs, 19 homers, and 44 RBI for the Gators. She was also named an All-American. Ohio State catcher Jasmyn Burns is taking her talents to Lubbock as well. This past season the All-American sophomore had the fourth most home runs with 25, setting a program single-season record. Burns was a monster from the plate, being the eighth-best hitter in the nation, thanks to a .455 batting average, 14th in RBI with 72, fifth in slugging percentage (1.006), fifth in total bases (166), and seventh in OPS (1.546). Jackie Lis, a three-time All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team selection and former MVP of the league, is the last to join the Red Raiders. During her time at Southern Illinois, Lis led the program to three MCV regular season titles. She is also the program's time leader in home runs with 44. This past season, Lis had 58 hits, 48 RBI, 33 walks, and a .358 batting average. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Basin Bites: Packing the punch with super lunch

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ) – In this week's Basin Bites, we visited Super Lonches, a food truck in Midland with some menu items that will make you want to come back for more and more. Super Lonches is a brand-new truck that just opened a few weeks after both owners, Diana Suarez and Jesus Melendez, were inspired by Suarez's father, who also owns a food truck in El Paso. Serving Mexican Comfort Food From Scratch 'It all started with my parents,' says Suarez. 'They own a food truck in El Paso as well, and then they started from scratch. It's been almost like 20 years, and then I started helping them a few years ago. Then my parents always approached me to open my own business over here with my husband, and then I think it has already come to life now.' At Super Lonches, the star of the show is the namesake 'super lonche,' a hefty sandwich stacked on soft bolillo bread and packed with your choice of meat options, including bistek, al pastor, ham, and more. From there, it only gets bolder: layers of avocado, hot dog slices, lettuce, tomato, and house-made condiments round out the savory tower. But the love doesn't stop at the lonches. The truck also serves hand-cut French fries, made fresh daily, and refreshing aguas frescas, like cantaloupe and lemonade, perfect for the West Texas heat. Super Lonches is located at 2209 Rankin Hwy in Midland and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 12 pm to 8 pm. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Chevron & Ariat Texas Rattlers hosted second annual charity rodeo

ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- For the second year in a row, Chevron and the Ariat Texas Rattlers teamed up to bring the basin an exciting matchup anchored by a landmark charity initiative. 'When Chevron and the Ariat Texas Rattlers joined together to bring the PBR Chevron Showdown to West Texas, we really wanted to make sure that we integrated charity as a part of the landmark event,' said Catie Matthews, Chevron's Public & Government Affairs Adviser. 'And so through that, the $800 for 8 Seconds program was born.' The way that the $800 for 8 Seconds program works is very simple. Every time a Rattler rider holds on for eight seconds, whether at the Chevron Showdown or throughout the entire Team Series season, an $800 donation will be given to a local community organization. The Ariat Texas Rattlers General Manager Chad Blankenship says the program helps provide his riders with some extra motivation. 'The $800 for 8 program has had a fantastic impact on our riders. You know, fundamentally, they're out there riding for themselves and to provide for their families. But when there's a program like $800 for 8 behind them, it really creates an even deeper and bigger purpose for them and their riding.' WATCH: More about the charitable impact What's the best part about being the General Manager for the Rattlers? Blankenship: 'One, it starts with the riders. To be in a role where I can support these young men to achieve their dreams, to even exceed their dreams, it's tremendously rewarding. The other piece that's been most rewarding really is just the fan engagement… A team format gives fans an opportunity to kind of come in and engage more deeply. There's hometown pride. The Texas Rattlers, of course, are based in Fort Worth, but we really ride for all of Texas, and we have thousands of fans in the Permian Basin. It's a huge privilege when the fans come and they show up and they fly the flag for the team and all the riders who are competing for them.' What's it like to have Dwight Yoakam perform? Matthews: 'Dwight Yoakum is quite the perfect fit for this event. He has that appeal of the Western culture and rodeo and just has that appeal to the people attending the event, but he also, in a way, has a special connection to Chevron. A lot of the folks here, our employees, have worked in our Bakersfield asset, and we all know Dwight is famous for the song 'Streets of Bakersfield,' so I'm sure a lot of our employees are going to enjoy hearing that.'
