New Berlin student correctly spells 'metanym' to advance to National Spelling Bee semifinals
New Berlin seventh grader Ethan Robert has advanced to the semifinals of the National Spelling Bee on May 28 in National Harbor, Maryland.
"Metanym" is the latest word Robert spelled correctly in the quarterfinals of the competition, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2025.
Robert is one of 57 spellers remaining in the competition and the last Wisconsin student represented on the stage. The semifinals will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. May 28.
Earlier on May 28, the New Berlin Eisenhower Middle/High School student advanced past the fifth round of the competition ― the second round of the quarterfinals ― after correctly answering the vocabulary question for the word albatross, a large seabird.
Before that, Robert correctly spelled the word adobo, a dish of Spanish origin consisting of meat marinated in a spicy sauce, browned and then simmered in the marinade.
During the preliminary rounds on May 27, Robert correctly spelled the word Promyshlennik, meaning Russian trappers and fur traders of Siberia and Alaska.
Robert isn't the only Wisconsin student competing this year, but he is the only one still remaining.
Another Wisconsin speller, Appleton sixth-grader Jacob Martonito, correctly spelled his first-round preliminary word but was eliminated on a vocabulary question in the second round on May 27.
Martonito, who attends Appleton Classical School, correctly spelled "Makgadikgadi Pans," the name of a Botswana basin filled with salt beds. However, he incorrectly answered a vocabulary question on the word "ingenuous."
The two students competed at Madison College in March to advance to the national competition.
The semifinals are from 7 to 9 p.m. May 28 on ION. The finals are from 7 to 9 p.m. May 29 on ION. You can also watch the livestream directly on spellingbee.com.
This competition has featured 243 spellers from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Department of Defense Schools in Europe, along with five countries outside the U.S., according to Spelling Bee's website.
The winner will receive $50,000 cash and the official Scripps Cup trophy.
According to competition's website, Robert loves watching sports (especially the NFL), doing taekwondo, math and geography, hanging out with friends and online gaming. He also enjoys reading and listed the Percy Jackson series as his favorite book.

Advertisement Liverpool look likely to get their man for a very hefty transfer fee, seeing off competition from Premier League rivals Manchester City as well as Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich. Bayern tends to be the natural destination for Germany's best young players at other clubs but 22-year-old Wirtz is understood to be bound for Anfield when the Reds can finalise a deal with Leverkusen and the player himself. 'He's definitely in the top 10 in the world' Florian Wirtz | Credit: Getty Images Understandably, there are those at Leverkusen who won't be upset to see Wirtz break the pattern of Bayern hoovering up German talent. Spanish midfielder Aleix Garcia, who joined Leverkusen last summer and had the briefest of Premier League experiences with Man City, has backed his teammate's Liverpool choice. 'I spent a year with him and I think he's dazzling. He has superior quality and is a game-changer. He's also driven to improve every day and always be the best. 'He's definitely in the top 10 in the world. I don't know if he's in the top five but he's definitely in the top 10. He has spectacular talent and a hunger to keep improving. Garcia signed for the then-champions from Girona last June, joining Wirtz and Tah in an unsuccessful title defence under former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso. Advertisement After their historic unbeaten league season Die Werkself claimed a comfortable second place in 2024-25 but finished 13 points behind Bayern. Alonso has since departed for Real Madrid and new coach Erik ten Hag will have to contend with the loss of Tah and Wirtz as Leverkusen's success inevitably begins to result in their top talent getting plucked. Midfielder Garcia will be eager to be pivotal in Ten Hag's plan to navigate the transition. He spent three years at Girona after short spells in Romania and at Eibar, having been sold to Dinamo Bucharest by City in 2020. Now 27, Garcia broke into the Spanish national team picture as a Girona player and featured in 28 Bundesliga games for Leverkusen in 2024-25.

Jose Luis Ballester, who went viral at Masters for unsavory moment, joins LIV Golf
The reigning U.S. Amateur champion, Jose Luis Ballester, has made the choice to head to LIV Golf. The Spanish youngster is set for his professional debut in Virginia in the Saudi Arabia-backed league. LIV Golf announced that Ballester, who goes by Josele, signed a multi-year deal to join the league, where he will be a part of the Fireballs team led by his fellow compatriot Sergio Garcia. Ballester also joins Abraham Ancer and David Puig on the Fireballs squad. Luis Masaveu, though, loses his full-time slot with the team. "We are very excited about Josele joining the team," Garcia said in a statement. "Personally, I have known him since he could pick up a golf club and he has worked with my father as his coach throughout his golf career." Not only does the 21-year-old have a connection with his new team captain, but he is also connected with Jon Rahm, another Spaniard on LIV. Their connection also involves Arizona State, the alma mater for both golfers as well as Phil Mickelson, who has been a face for LIV Golf since its inception. Ballester was able to join the Korn Ferry Tour, which is a step below the PGA Tour, after finishing third in the PGA Tour University standings this year. However, Golf Channel reported on Monday that he declined membership on that tour, beginning speculation that he might be heading to LIV. Ballester has already participated in a major, though, playing in this year's Masters at Augusta National Golf Club in April. He didn't make the cut, but he did have a viral moment after admitting he urinated in the famous Rae's Creek, which sits on the par-5 13th hole as the final leg of the three-hole "Amen Corner." Ballester said it was an emergency, but he caught a ton of flak on social media for what many believed was him being disrespectful at one of the most historic courses in the world. "I'm like, 'I really need to pee.' Didn't really know where to go, and since [Justin Thomas] had an issue on the green, I'm like, 'I'm just going to sneak here in the river and probably people would not see me much,' and then they clapped for me. Probably one of the claps that I really got today real loud, so that was kind of funny," Ballester, who shot a 4-over 76, said after his first round. "They saw me. It was not embarrassing at all for me. If I had to do it again, I would do it again," he said. Ballester said that he apologized for relieving himself in Rae's Creek to Augusta National officials. Ballester will join his new LIV Golf peers at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club on June 6 for his debut round on tour. Trump says Putin told him that Russia will respond to Ukrainian attack on airfields
WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump said that Russian President Vladimir Putin told him 'very strongly' in a phone call Wednesday that he will respond to Ukraine's weekend drone attack on Russian airfields as the deadlock over the war drags on and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy dismisses Russia's ceasefire proposal. The U.S. president said in a social media post that his lengthy call with Putin "was a good conversation, but not a conversation that will lead to immediate Peace.' It's the first time Trump has weighed in on Ukraine's daring attack inside Russia. The U.S. did not have advance notice of the operation, according to the White House, a point Trump emphasized during the call with Putin, according to a Putin's foreign affairs adviser. The U.S. has led a recent diplomatic push to stop the full-scale invasion, which began on Feb. 24, 2022. Trump, in his social media post, did not say how he reacted to Putin's promise to respond to Ukraine's attack, but his post showed none of the frustration that Trump has expressed with his Russian counterpart in recent weeks over his prolonging of the war. Yuri Ushakov, Putin's foreign affairs adviser, said at a briefing that the two leaders characterized the call as 'positive and quite productive,' and reaffirmed their readiness to stay in touch. 'I believe it was useful for Trump to hear our assessments of what happened,' Ushakov said, noting that the discussion of the attacks was one of the key points in the conversation. He didn't respond to a question about what the Russian response to the attacks could be. Zelenskyy later said in a post on social media: 'Many have spoken with Russia at various levels. But none of these talks have brought a reliable peace, or even stopped the war. Unfortunately, Putin feels impunity.' The Ukrainian leader urged more pressure to be put on Russia and said that Putin's planned response 'means, that with every new strike, with every delay of diplomacy, Russia is giving the finger to the entire world — to all those who still hesitate to increase pressure on it.' Trump repeatedly promised to end the war quickly, and even said he would accomplish it before he was sworn in. But he lost patience with Putin in recent weeks, publicly pleading with him to stop fighting and even said late last month that the Russian leader 'has gone absolutely CRAZY." Trump, however, has not committed to backing a bipartisan push to sanction Putin. The call was Trump's first known talk with Putin since May 19. They also discussed, according to Trump and Ushakov, Iran's nuclear program and the possibility of Russia engaging in talks with Tehran as the U.S. pushes it to abandon its rapidly advancing nuclear program. It was not clear if Trump also planned to speak with Zelenskyy. The White House did not respond to a message Wednesday afternoon. Zelenskyy brushes off Russian plan and pushes for talks The Ukrainian leader earlier Wednesday dismissed Russia's ceasefire plan as 'an ultimatum' and renewed his call for direct talks with Putin to break the stalemate over the war, which has dragged on for nearly 3 1/2 years. Putin, however, showed no willingness to meet with Zelenskyy, expressing anger Wednesday about what he said were Ukraine's recent 'terrorist acts' on Russian rail lines in the Kursk and Bryansk regions on the countries' border. 'How can any such (summit) meetings be conducted in such circumstances? What shall we talk about?' Putin asked in a video call with top Russian officials. Putin accused Ukraine of seeking a truce only to replenish its stockpiles of Western arms, recruit more soldiers and prepare new attacks like those in Kursk and Bryansk. Putin also spoke Wednesday to Pope Leo XIV, who has promised to make ' every effort ' to help end the war. During the call, Leo urged Putin to make a gesture that would promote peace and stressed the importance of dialogue, according to the Vatican. Russia and Ukraine exchanged memorandums setting out their conditions for a ceasefire for discussion at Monday's direct peace talks between delegations in Istanbul, their second meeting in just over two weeks. Zelenskyy had previously challenged Putin to meet him in Turkey, but Putin stayed away. Russia and Ukraine have established red lines that make a quick deal unlikely, despite a U.S.-led international diplomatic push to stop the fighting. The Kremlin's Istanbul proposal contained a list of demands that Kyiv and its Western allies see as nonstarters. 'This document looks like spam' Zelenskyy said that the second round of talks in Istanbul was no different from the first meeting on May 16. Zelenskyy described the latest negotiations in Istanbul as 'a political performance' and 'artificial diplomacy' designed to stall for time, delay sanctions and convince the United States that Russia is engaged in dialogue. The Ukrainian leader said that he sees little value in continuing talks at the current level of delegations. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov led the Ukrainian delegation in Istanbul, while Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to Putin, headed the Russian team. Zelenskyy said he wants a ceasefire with Russia before a possible summit meeting with Putin, possibly also including Trump, in an effort to remove obstacles to a peace settlement. U.S. defense secretary stays away A second round of peace talks on Monday between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in Istanbul lasted just over an hour and made no progress on ending the war. They agreed only to swap thousands of their dead and seriously wounded troops. Also, a new prisoner exchange with Russia could take place over the weekend, Zelenskyy said. In tandem with the talks, both sides have kept up offensive military actions along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line and carried out deep strikes. Ukraine's Security Service gave more details Wednesday about its spectacular weekend drone strike on Russian air bases, which it claimed destroyed or damaged 41 Russian aircraft, including strategic bombers. The agency released more footage showing drones swooping under and over parked aircraft and featuring some planes burning. It also claimed the planes struck included A-50, Tu-95, Tu-22, Tu-160, An-12, and Il-78 aircraft, adding that the drones had highly automated capabilities and were partly piloted by an operator and partly by using artificial intelligence which flew the drone along a planned route in the event it lost signal. The drones were not fully autonomous and a 'human is still choosing what target to hit,' said Caitlin Lee, a drone warfare expert at RAND, a think thank. Ukraine's security agency said it also set off an explosion on Tuesday on the seabed beneath the Kerch Bridge, a vital transport link between Russia and illegally annexed Crimea, claiming it caused damage to the structure. But Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday that there was no damage. Russia's Defense Ministry said Wednesday that its troops have taken control of another village in Ukraine's northern Sumy region, on the border with Russia. Putin announced on May 22 that Russian troops aim to create a buffer zone that might help prevent Ukrainian cross-border attacks. Since then, Russia's Ministry of Defense claims its forces have taken control of nine Sumy villages. ___ Arhirova reported from Kyiv, Ukraine.
