Leading Private Healthcare Group Akdital Expands Presence in Morocco
Groupe Akdital, a private clinic company, has opened 12 new healthcare facilities in Morocco in the last year, nearly tripling its total establishments across the country.
The group currently has locations in Khouribga, Marrakech, Essaouira, Tetouan, Errachidia, Taroudant, Dakhla, Kenitra, Benguerir and Meknes, with over 3,500 doctors and 3,700 hospital beds, according to Akdital's presentation of 2024 results. Throughout last year, the group admitted over 670,000 patient cases and recorded a 96.7% patient satisfaction rate.
Urban populations tend to have more access to care in Morocco, says a recent study by the United States National Institute of Health, noting that Morocco's primary healthcare challenge is to address disparities between urban and rural areas. This disparity especially affects the quality of equipment, infrastructure and specialist care available to Moroccans.
After publishing its 2024 annual results, Akdital also shared its plan for 2025-2030 which includes advancing its quality and practice to curb this issue especially in less urban areas.
Akdital's overall goal is to 'consolidate [its] position as a benchmark in Morocco by providing access to quality healthcare to all Moroccans, in a responsible and sustainable manner, while initiating [its] international influence,' says the document.
Akdital's Expansion Plan
By 2027, Akdital plans to have 62 establishments and over 6000 hospital beds in 32 different cities in Morocco. For each Akdital hospital, the group will identify 4 to 5 small towns within a radius of 100 km to open an Akdital diagnostic center.
Rural populations often face difficulties in obtaining timely diagnoses and treatments, leading to delays in care that can worsen health outcomes. This gap is exacerbated by the concentration of healthcare professionals in cities, leaving smaller towns and villages with limited access to skilled medical personnel.
Akdital's goal is to open 200 of these diagnostic centers by 2030, providing a new way of bringing medical diagnoses closer to populations who live far from urban centers. This initiative will strengthen Akdital's regional services and provide medical support to underserved communities.
To further enhance its medical services in Morocco, Akdital has embraced technological innovation and modernized its operations. This includes digitizing medical records and introducing state-of-the-art surgical robotics to enable more precise, less invasive procedures.
Akdital is also prioritizing its operational efficiency with a strong focus on improving the patient experience. Efforts include maintaining high standards of quality and hygiene and placing the patient at the center of care. The group is implementing patient satisfaction surveys, qualitative monitoring, and a patient-centered approach to medicine.
Lastly, the group has laid out plans to strengthen its community impact. This includes reducing energy consumption, minimizing its carbon footprint, and improving the management of medical waste. Through the Akdital Foundation, the group also provides healthcare access to vulnerable populations and supports local socio-economic initiatives.

Akdital is further strengthening its workforce through the launch of the Akdital Academy, which will provide professional development programs in both paramedical and administrative fields. Additionally, the group is enhancing its human resources services and introducing new employee incentives aimed at boosting performance and productivity.
Akdital's next step involves its international expansion into the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia between 2025 and 2030. The group has notably outlined plans to open two establishments in Dubai and another Emirate and two in Riyadh and Jeddah.
As Akdital continues to expand within Morocco and abroad, its investments in infrastructure, personnel training, and digital innovation signal a broader strategy to position itself as a competitive healthcare provider in both regional and international markets.
With its sights set on the Gulf region, the group's upcoming projects in the UAE and Saudi Arabia mark the beginning of a new phase that could extend its healthcare model beyond Moroccan borders.

Addressing Morocco's medical brain drain : Driss El Yazami advocates global dialogue
Driss El Yazami, president of the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), called for «an active international policy» to strengthen dialogue with global organizations and attract medical expertise, both national and foreign, to address Morocco's healthcare worker shortage. Speaking at a study day organized by the Istiqlalian group on the migration of Moroccan medical professionals, he stressed the importance of a «territorial policy involving regions and communities». The event gathered Minister of Higher Education Azzedine El Midaoui, former Health Ministers Houcine El Ouardi and Abdelouahed El Fassi, medical faculty deans, doctors, and members of the second Chamber. El Yazami advocated for «openness to foreign talents» and promoting the «Moroccan dream» as a means to strengthen ties between Moroccans worldwide and their homeland. He highlighted that physician mobility is a global phenomenon, not unique to Morocco, urging avoidance of "alarmist approaches" in favor of proactive national and international strategies. Migration, he said, «is neither a crime nor a scourge but a fundamental right and a reflection of deep social changes in Moroccan society». El Yazami noted that migration reasons extend beyond economics to include personal fulfillment, emphasizing the crucial role of Moroccan talents abroad in shaping the debate. The CCME insists that citizens abroad should be «fully integrated into discussions about Morocco's future, especially regarding health, education, and public policy».

Hajj: Saudi Arabia Launches World's Largest Cooling System for Pilgrims
Rabat – Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of the world's largest cooling system at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, where pilgrims are gathering to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. More than 1.4 million pilgrims have arrived in Saudi Arabia to perform Hajj, which kicked off today. Saudi authorities promised to take all necessary measures to ensure the success of the Hajj season amid scorching temperatures. The newly launched cooling system has a capacity of 155,000 refrigeration tonnes, The National reported on Tuesday. According to the report, the system is set to ensure that temperatures at the mosque remain between 22 and 24 degrees Celsius. These efforts are part of Saudi Arabia's 'comprehensive vision aimed at elevating the pilgrim experience and providing the highest levels of comfort and tranquility during ritual performance, especially given the potentially harsh weather conditions,' argued The National report. Last year, Saudi authorities announced the death of 1,3000 pilgrims due to temperatures that reached 50 degrees. The number included 20 Moroccans who died during the 2024 Hajj season. Morocco has a pilgrim quota of 34,000, with 22,400 pilgrims being monitored through official government channels and 11,600 through travel agencies. Moroccans paid at least $65,000 to perform the Hajj this season. King Mohammed VI last month addressed a message to Moroccan pilgrims, asking them to honor and represent Morocco's values. 'I therefore expect you to be ambassadors for your country and preserve this bright cultural image. Keep in mind that it is these incontrovertible values which have enabled our country to continue to enjoy security and stability, and to press ahead,' the King said.

Operation Marhaba 2025: 29 Ships Prepare for 3.5 Million Travelers
Doha – Morocco has finalized preparations for Operation Marhaba 2025, focusing on four key priorities: traffic flow management, strengthened security, proximity support, and enhanced health vigilance. Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita outlined these measures during a weekly oral questions session at the House of Councilors on Tuesday. The maritime component will feature 29 vessels from seven shipping companies operating 12 routes from ports in Italy, France, and Spain. Approximately MAD 28 million ($2.8 million) has been allocated to improve reception infrastructure at the Tanger-Med port. This year's operation anticipates an exceptional influx of approximately 3.5 million travelers, mainly Moroccans residing in Europe, representing a 4% increase from previous years. An estimated 890,000 vehicles are expected to cross the strait this summer, marking a 5% increase. This rise may be linked to the Spanish government's regularization program, allowing thousands of migrants to normalize their status and travel. The operation will feature over 12,000 maritime crossings—an 84% increase compared to 2004. 'Security and safety will be reinforced through enhanced border control mechanisms,' Bourita said. The operation will deploy 24 reception centers—18 within Morocco and six abroad—along with additional human resources in accordance with royal instructions. Consulates will maintain their traditional extended schedule during this period, including weekend and holiday service. Staff numbers will increase, and mobile consulates will be established 'to support this large-scale operation under the High Patronage of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, benefiting three million citizens,' according to the minister. Health vigilance remains a priority with specialized teams positioned along routes and at rest areas. 'The goal is to improve this operation year after year, to meet His Majesty the King's ambition,' Bourita noted. A massive joint workforce of approximately 60,000 personnel will be mobilized across all sectors. Spanish authorities announced the recruitment of at least 29,000 people, while Morocco will deploy a similar number of participants, including official institutions, administrations, volunteers, the Mohammed V Foundation for Solidarity, and other stakeholders. Preparations have involved multiple meetings of the National Transit Commission, chaired by the Interior Ministry. Another Moroccan-Spanish meeting was held in Cadiz on May 29, along with various thematic sectoral meetings. Streamlined reentry for Moroccan expats The Customs and Indirect Tax Administration (ADII) announced new facilities for Moroccan expatriates on May 28. Notably, Moroccans aged 60 and above who have lived abroad for at least ten years can now benefit from a 90% reduction on the value of imported vehicles. Provincial and Prefectural Customs Directors can now validate applications based on authenticated documents, including residence certificates, foreign ID cards with overseas addresses, or consular registration cards. The administration has also simplified procedures for returning expatriates, who can benefit from a three-year aging allowance on their vehicle's age, limited to one vehicle per person and once in a lifetime. Previously required two-year pay slips for employees or tax declarations for merchants are no longer necessary. In Ceuta, authorities have launched a mobile application called 'Embolsamiento Ceuta' to manage traffic flow toward Morocco. Available in Spanish, French, and English, the app provides real-time estimates of waiting times at the Tarajal border crossing. Users receive a digital ticket with a QR code required for entry and exit from the regulation area, with paper tickets available for those without smartphones. Ceuta has also increased staffing with up to ten agents daily working in three shifts. Infrastructure improvements include more shaded areas and new drinking water points. Traffic forecasts predict a 4% increase in travelers and 5% in vehicles compared to last year, despite a slight decline in personal car travel. Tags: Marhaba 2025Marhaba operationNasser Bourita
