Mayor Bass partners with Lakers coach, former opponent to rebuild iconic Palisades building

A longtime neighborhood mainstay in the Pacific Palisades was severely damaged during January's devastating wildfires. Now, the Mayor of Los Angeles is teaming up with a former political opponent and the coach of the Lakers to bring it back.
Mayor Karen Bass, alongside billionaire Rick Caruso and L.A. Lakers head coach JJ Redick on Thursday announced plans to bring back the Palisades Recreation Center. The public-private partnership pairs the city of L.A. with nonprofits LA Strong Sports and Steadfast LA — as well as other Palisades-based investors — to rebuild what the mayor's office called that 'hub of community and recreational activity' in west L.A.
'The City's number one pledge has been to eliminate any and every obstacle in the way of rebuilding, and we are forging new partnerships with all sectors as we continue to move Los Angeles forward,' said Mayor Bass. 'The Palisades Recreation Center, library and playground are each a vital piece of this community, which is why the City pushed for the Army Corps of Engineers to prioritize debris removal at these landmarks. We will continue this progress, and I thank everyone — LA Strong Sports, Steadfast LA and key Palisades groups — for coming together for this new effort.'
LA Strong Sports is a nonprofit started last month by Redick and his wife, Chelsea, as well as Charles and Jenna Jackson and Kylee Kilgore. Its goal is to help bring high-quality sports facilities and programs to L.A. after the fires disrupted participation for youths.
'We visited the Pali Rec Center the same day we decided to move to the Palisades. That visit showed us not only how important the park was as a physical space, but how the people and families who took advantage of it made up the beating heart of the community,' said JJ and Chelsea Redick. 'We're proud to formally announce a public-private partnership with the City and these local organizations to rebuild it so it can once again serve as a gathering place for sports and activities.'
Meanwhile, real estate mogul and 2022 L.A. Mayoral election runner-up Rick Caruso started Steadfast LA in February to help provide private funding to rebuilding projects across the area.
'This public-private partnership to rebuild the Rec Center with the City and in collaboration with civic leaders, local groups, and industry experts demonstrates the vision of Steadfast LA in action,' said Rick Caruso, Chairman of Steadfast LA. 'By bringing the public sector, the private sector, and the community together to do this, we're not only restoring an integral part of the Palisades, but we're showing how we can effectively respond to this tragedy with the urgency that the moment demands. We intend to follow a similar approach on our projects in Altadena and Malibu as well.'
The joint public appearance for Caruso and Bass comes as the two have experienced a friendly relationship in recent months despite facing off in a heated election nearly three years ago. Last month, Caruso came out against a recall effort to remove Bass from office in light of the fire that killed 12 people and destroyed more than 7,000 structures.
'We must rebuild our communities, get people back into their homes, and open businesses that have been closed or lost. That must be our total focus. There is a time and place for politics, but it is not now,' Caruso said on X.
In the coming weeks, the nonprofits and the city will work on expanding initial design plans for the new recreation center.

Havlicek Stole the Pod 15: All-Time top Boston Celtics villains

Who are the greatest Boston Celtics villains of all time? With the Celtics being the NBA's winningest franchise in terms of both titles and regular season games won, there is no shortage of players, coaches, and execs who have wanted to see Boston fail over the years, preferably at their expense. But there have also been some high profile examples of Celtics betrayal from people inside the storied ball club, sticking a proverbial knife into the back of the team. And there are plenty of examples of players who aspired to be Celtics villains, but couldn't quite pull off the status for any number of reasons. There are even some who are entirely miscast in such a role, yet keep getting mentioned as such. To get to the bottom of this important historical debate/peak offseason content, the hosts of "Havlicek Stole the Pod" linked up with Boston-based actor and longtime friend of the pod Evan Turrisini, who has developed the most scientific approach to determining Celtics villainy we have yet come across. Claudio Echeverri leaves Manchester City on season-long loan deal

Manchester City have finalised and confirmed a season-long loan for attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri, who joins Bundesliga giants Bayer Leverkusen. The Argentine teenager has been highly regarded within the Etihad project since his arrival from River Plate, where he was considered one of South America's brightest prospects. After completing his move to City in January 2024, Echeverri remained on loan with River until early 2025 before linking up with Pep Guardiola's squad. Despite high expectations, the playmaker was always viewed as a long-term project, and this latest move is designed to accelerate his pathway into senior European football. Echeverri's first taste of action in a City shirt came in the second half of the 2024/25 campaign, making his debut with a cameo in the FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace at Wembley, before following it up with another substitute appearance on the final day of the Premier League season away at Fulham. His first goal for the club would then arrive in the FIFA Club World Cup, where he scored a well-taken free-kick against Al Ain in Atlanta – although his night ended early through injury. The decision to sanction a loan move has not come as a surprise, with Manchester City previously considering similar developmental opportunities for other high-profile youngsters. James McAtee and James Trafford have both had their careers shaped by spells away, and officials will hope Echeverri's time in Germany provides him with the same benefits. As confirmed by both Manchester City and Bayer Leverkusen on Thursday, Claudio Echeverri will feature in the Bundesliga for the duration of the 2025/26 season, with the German club holding no option to buy on the 19-year-old next summer. The choice of Leverkusen as a destination is also telling. Erik ten Hag's side are tipped to be one of the most exciting clubs in Europe, combining youth development with Champions League ambition. For Claudio Echeverri, this represents the chance to earn regular game time in a demanding environment, something that would have been far more difficult under Pep Guardiola's stacked midfield options. Looking ahead, City will keep a close eye on Echeverri's progress, with the Argentine widely tipped to be part of the club's long-term midfield rebuild. His technical flair and eye for goal could see him develop into a key figure in the seasons to come, particularly with long-term doubts over the likes of Ilkay Gundogan, Mateo Kovacic, and Bernardo Silva. Should Claudio Echeverri excel in the Bundesliga, he could return to the Etihad Stadium next summer ready to compete more seriously for a first-team role. Alternatively, Manchester City may consider further loan moves if they feel he requires more time before cementing his place in Pep Guardiola's plans.

Manchester City talent Echeverri heads to Leverkusen on loan to fill hole left by Wirtz

LEVERKUSEN, Germany — Manchester City's young attacking midfielder Claudio Echeverri is heading to Bayer Leverkusen on loan and has some big shoes to fill. Considered one of the brightest young talents in South American soccer, the 19-year-old from Argentina joins on a season-long loan to 'gain further first-team experience,' City said. He was joined at Leverkusen by another new signing Thursday, defender Loïc Badé from Sevilla.
