Italian court upholds life sentence for parents of Pakistani woman killed by family
ROME: An Italian appeals court Friday upheld life sentences for a Pakistani couple convicted of murdering their 18-year-old daughter in a so-called honor killing after she refused an arranged marriage.
The case shocked many Italians and became a symbol of the brutal mistreatment of immigrant women who rebel against inflexible family rules.
The appeals court in the northern city of Bologna said that Saman Abbas, whose body was found at a farmhouse in 2022, 18 months after she disappeared, was killed with the participation of the whole family.
The court upheld a life sentence for both the teenager's father, Shabbir Abbas, and her mother, Nazia Shaheen. It also sentenced to life in prison two cousins who had been previously cleared by a lower court.
Saman's uncle, Danish Hasnain, was also sentenced to 22 years in prison for his involvement in the murder. He had been previously given a 14-year sentence.
The court case, in Reggio Emilia in northern Italy, became the most high-profile of several criminal investigations in Italy in recent years dealing with the slaying or mistreatment of immigrant women or girls who rebelled against their family's insistence that they marry someone chosen for them.
So-called honor killings are common in Pakistan, where family members and relatives sometimes kill women who don't follow local traditions and culture or decide to marry someone of their own choice.
Saman Abbas' body was dug up in November 2022 in an abandoned farmhouse near the fields where her father worked in northern Italy. Italian prosecutors contend the woman was murdered by her family on May 1, 2021.
A few days later, her parents flew from Milan to Pakistan.
Saman Abbas' father was later arrested in Pakistan and extradited to Italy for prosecution. Her mother was convicted in absentia but was arrested in May last year after three years on the run.
Abbas' uncle, two cousins, her father and her mother went on trial first in February 2023. All the defendants have denied wrongdoing.
Saman Abbas had emigrated as a teenager from Pakistan to the farm town of Novellara in Italy's northern region of Emilia-Romagna. She quickly embraced Western ways, including shedding her headscarf and dating a young man of her choice. In one social media post, she and her Pakistani boyfriend were shown kissing on a street in the regional capital, Bologna.
According to Italian investigators, that kiss enraged Abbas' parents, who wanted her to marry a cousin in Pakistan.
The young woman was last seen alive on April 30, 2021 a few hundred meters (yards) away from where her body was discovered in surveillance camera video as she walked with her parents on the watermelon farm where her father worked.
Abbas had reportedly told her boyfriend that she feared for her life because of her refusal to marry an older man in her homeland.
An autopsy revealed a broken neck bone, possibly caused by strangulation.
In 2019, Italy made coercing an Italian citizen or resident into marriage, even abroad, a crime covered under domestic violence laws.
Following Abbas' disappearance, Italy's union of Islamic communities issued a religious ruling rejecting forced marriages.

Migrants with minors not aiding illegal immigration, top EU court rules
LUXEMBOURG — The Court of Justice of the European Union on Tuesday ruled in favor of migrants' rights in a case filed by an Italian court regarding what can be considered aiding and abetting illegal immigration. The court ruling noted that, in the case of a third-country national entering the EU irregularly accompanied by a child in their care, their conduct "cannot be regarded as aiding and abetting illegal immigration." "In fact, the parent in this case assumes an obligation related to his or her personal responsibility towards the child in accordance with fundamental rights, in particular respect for family life and the child," the president of the EU's highest legal authority, Koen Lenaerts, explained in his judgment. With this preliminary ruling, the court agrees with the Court of Bologna, which filed the proceedings in July 2023 following the entry into Italy of a Congolese citizen in 2019. The woman entered the country at the airport border of Bologna with two minors — her daughter and niece, over whom she had actual care following the death of the niece's mother — using false documents. She said she fled Congo after receiving threats from her ex-partner and took the two minors with her because she feared for their physical well-being. She was arrested and is being prosecuted for facilitating unauthorized entry into Italy. The Italian court had asked the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) whether the 2002 directive on the facilitation of illegal immigration was compatible with the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The referring court doubted whether the directive provides for humanitarian assistance as a justification for making the crime of aiding and abetting not punishable. In other words, it was asking the EU court about the scope of the general offence of facilitation of unauthorised entry, provided for by EU law. "The court answers that the conduct of a person who, in breach of the rules governing the movement of people across borders, brings into the territory of a member state minors who are third-country nationals and are accompanying him or her, and over whom he or she exercises actual care, does not fall within the scope of that offence," the ruling on Tuesday said. It added that this conduct "does not constitute facilitation of illegal immigration, which EU law seeks to combat" but rather "the exercise by that person of his or her responsibility stemming from the family relationship and the actual care over those minors." Lenaerts went further, stating that the interpretation is necessary, also in light of the fundamental right to asylum. He explained that, because the woman had made an application for international protection, she could not be regarded as staying illegally on the territory. An American political activist predicted that the Zionist project and the State of Israel will fail, as more people are waking up to the truth about Israel's crimes against the Palestinians. In a viral video on social media platforms, the American activist, known by the name 'Honest Appraisal1,' stated several reasons that will erode the Israeli state and weaken the Western support for its regime. Demographic Changes The activist pointed to many reasons for the potential failure of the Zionist project and the Israeli State. The first is that 'the economically viable population is reducing,' and 'there is a serious shift in the demographics' in Israel. 'In 2022, there was a significant increase in net migration, 75,000 people, massive rise over 2021.' But in 2024, 'net negative migration with 18,200 leaving overall,' he said. Qualified People Leaving The American activist said that there is a lot of dual citizens – Europeans, Canadians, Americans – who have moved to Israel, because changes in the birth right laws and other aspects had lots of people coming in and rapidly becoming Israeli citizens. 'Now the people are going out, people who can. And that's either because they can return to their countries of origin or they can immigrate to other countries because they qualify for immigration. 'And those tend to be the highly qualified people, so there is undoubtedly a massive brain drain out of Israel, including many economically active people or entrepreneurs,' he noted. He also said that many of them leave out of fear, and in some cases due to opposition to what Netanyahu, Likud and the Israeli military are doing in Palestine. Psychopaths Staying The activist said that those who stay are 'the people who can't leave or are ideologically committed to the Zionist project and Israel.' He described them as a 'punch of psychopaths' because of what they are doing. He pointed to the fact that Israel does not have extradition treaties with any other country, including its greatest ally the US. Therefore, the country has become 'a festering cauldron for Jewish pedophiles, rapists, conmen, murderers fleeing their countries of origin to a safe harbor of Israel,' he said. 'So, the population is degrading literally on a daily basis, both in terms of economic viability but also in terms of psychopathy. This must lead to the erosion of what they currently call their civilization, their culture,' he noted. On top of that comes 'the murderers of the Israeli military reservists and soldiers returning from the genocide of the Palestinians, having seen dead friends and relatives killed by the superior military forces of Hezbollah and Hamas, on top of the PTSG for the horrendous actions they have taken in service of Israel. Western Support The American activist noted that 'Israel in itself as a single entity is dying under the Zionists, but it is kept alive by the US and Western EU countries. But that is going to change because even the most MAGA people in the world are waking up to the fact that right now the US is not America First, but Israel First; that the promised action of Trump administration about Epstein, lower taxes, freedom of speech are all wasted at the behest of Israel, and subverted into the arrest, mistreatment and disappearance of opposition speakers and writers.' He added: 'And most importantly, the US economy is entirely directed toward Israel and war – which is what Donald Trump said he was against,' meaning the war. 'In Europe, hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of people wake up to the fact that their thoughts about and attitude towards Israel is wrong. And eventually, that has to lead to a change in policy and withdrawal of support for the ethnic cleansing and genocidal regime in Tel Aviv,' he said. In addition to that, 'the world's other two superpowers, Russia and China – particularly China – are supporting Palestinian liberation and watching their adversary the US wasting its money on Israel and laughing as the US deliberately weakens itself on a daily basis in support of the genocidal regime in Tel Aviv,' he noted. New York crypto investor charged with kidnapping Italian tourist for bitcoin ransom
NEW YORK — A 37-year-old cryptocurrency investor has been arrested and charged in New York City for allegedly kidnapping and torturing an Italian tourist in an attempt to extort access to his bitcoin wallet, authorities and media reports say. John Woeltz, a crypto investor originally from Kentucky, was arraigned Saturday in Manhattan Criminal Court on multiple charges including kidnapping with intent to collect ransom, assault, and unlawful imprisonment, according to court records. A second suspect, Beatrice Folchi, 24, was also arrested on Saturday in connection with the case, U.S. media reported. The 28-year-old male victim, whose identity has not been released, told police he arrived in New York from Italy on 6 May and was taken to Woeltz's rented luxury townhome in SoHo. There, he said, his passport was confiscated and he was held captive for weeks — beaten, restrained, and at times allegedly hung off a ledge — after refusing to give up his bitcoin password. Police say the man eventually escaped on Friday morning and contacted authorities. He was taken to a hospital and is currently in stable to ABC News and CBS, officers recovered Polaroid photographs showing the victim bound and tortured, along with firearms found inside the residence, which Woeltz was reportedly renting for between $30,000 and $40,000 a the New York Police Department nor the Manhattan District Attorney's Office has publicly commented, and Woeltz's legal representation has not yet issued a investigation remains ongoing as authorities determine whether additional charges will be filed or further individuals are involved. — Agencies
