Palliser Capital Publishes Value Enhancement Plan for Toyo Tires

Value enhancement plan addresses key factors inhibiting Toyo's share price and recommendations to unlock more than 45% upside for all shareholders
Presentation first unveiled at Sohn Hong Kong 2025 and now public for all stakeholders
LONDON, June 02, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Palliser Capital ("Palliser"), a significant shareholder in Toyo Tires ("Toyo") (5105 JT), today published a comprehensive presentation on the opportunities available to unlock value at Toyo. To ensure market transparency and respond to requests from shareholders and other stakeholders, Palliser published the presentation first delivered by James Smith, Palliser Founder and Chief Investment Officer, at the Sohn Hong Kong Investment Leaders Conference on May 30, 2025.
Toyo, a premium tire brand with a leading U.S. market share in Wide Light Truck Tires, has consistently underperformed and is materially undervalued, trading at a significant discount to peers across key valuation multiples, despite the company's far superior revenue and profitability profile. In Palliser's view, the factors driving this value gap are readily solvable and, if remedied, could deliver over 45% upside to shareholders – or materially more with a Palliser-proposed stakeholder value enhancement committee actively exploring options for Toyo, including interest from multiple PE and strategic buyers.
Palliser's enhancement plan includes:
Adopting best-in-class performance targets and incentive structures to fully align management incentives and shareholder interests;
Implementing a TSE-aligned capital allocation framework, grounded in clear and distinct metrics, returns and hurdle rates; and
Conducting a comprehensive review of all strategic options to maximize stakeholder value, including privatization and resolving overhang from Mitsubishi's investment in the company.
Full details of the presentation are outlined in the accompanying attachment.

LG's first 5K ultra-wide monitor with Thunderbolt 5 is made for data crunchers

LG has announced a new 40-inch Thunderbolt 5 monitor with an ultrawide 21:9 aspect ratio, and the company is being very upfront about who it's for: people who love crunching data and want more room to do that. The new LG UltraFine 40WT95UF is designed to 'meet the needs of data-intensive industries such as finance and IT,' according to a release from the company today. But it may still appeal far beyond that, with a 120Hz refresh rate and support for AMD's FreeSync Premium to help reduce screen tearing and flickering. Although LG is promoting the 40WT95UF as the 'world's first 5K2K monitor to support Thunderbolt 5,' it's not the company's first display to incorporate the latest iteration of the high-speed transfer protocol. The company previously announced another UltraFine model with Thunderbolt 5 support at CES 2025 with a 6K resolution. The model announced today features slightly less resolution at 5,120x2,160 pixels, but spread across a much wider panel making it better suited for organizing and laying out multiple windows and applications. Unfortunately, as with the announcement of the 6K display in January, LG hasn't said when its new UltraFine 40WT95UF will ship, how much it will cost, or who will be able to purchase one. LG's press release says the display will help strengthen the company's 'B2B market presence' which could potentially mean this new model won't be sold directly to consumers. Other features of the UltraFine 40WT95UF include both picture-in-picture and picture-by-picture functionality, LG's IPS Black panel technology, and USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, DisplayPort 2.1, and RJ45 ports. When using the monitor's Thunderbolt 5 USB-C port data transfer speeds of up to 80Gbps will be available. LG doesn't specifically say whether Intel's Bandwidth Boost mode is supported, which can boost transfer speeds to up to 120Gbps.

Japan's annual births fall to record low as country's 'silent emergency' deepens

TOKYO (AP) — The number of newborns in Japan is decreasing faster than projected, with the number of annual births falling to a record low last year, according to government data released Wednesday. The Health Ministry said 686,061 babies were born in Japan in 2024, a drop of 5.7% on the previous year and the first time the number of newborns had fallen below 700,000 since records began in 1899. The decline comes about 15 years faster than the government prediction. Last year's figure is about one-quarter of the peak of 2.7 million births in 1949 during the postwar baby boom. The data in a country of rapidly aging and shrinking population adds to concern about the sustainability of the economy and national security at a time it seeks to increase defense spending. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has described the situation as 'a silent emergency' and has promised to promote more flexible working environment and other measures that would help married couples to balance work and parenting, especially in rural areas where family values tend to be more conservative and harder on women. The Health Ministry's latest data showed that Japan's fertility rate — the average number of babies a woman is expected to have in her lifetime — also fell to a new low of 1.15 in 2024, from 1.2 a year earlier. The number of marriage was slightly up, to 485,063 couples, but the downtrend since the 1970s remains unchanged. Experts say the government measures have not addressed a growing number of young people reluctant to marry, while focusing largely on couples already married and plan to have or already had children. The younger generation are increasingly reluctant to marry or have children due to bleak job prospects, a high cost of living and a gender-biased corporate culture that adds extra burden only on women and working mothers, experts say. A growing number of women also cite pressure to change their surnames to that of their husband as part of their reluctance to marry. Under a civil law, couples must choose either surname to legally marry, a rule traditionally has caused women to abandon their maiden names. Japan's population of about 124 million people is projected to fall to 87 million by 2070, by when 40% of the population will be over 65.

Weird Elantra N Sales Surge Likely Isn't a Sport Sedan Comeback

Popularity for the humble sedan has faltered over the years, as buyers turn to more practical, higher-riding crossovers. Likewise, affordable performance cars aren't nearly as popular as they were, say, 20 years ago. That's why we're so surprised to hear the Hyundai Elantra N , a sporty sedan, just had its best sales month ever. Sadly, it's likely not a big a deal as you think. Hyundai reported May sales numbers this week, highlighting a massive 141-percent increase in Elantra N sales—the best single month for the trim since its introduction in 2021. While the company doesn't break down units sold by trim, the N's sales milestone comes as part of a 24-percent increase in sales for the Elantra overall, with 15,741 units sold. Don't get us wrong, the Elantra N is an excellent car. It punches above its weight, offering similar performance and smiles to cars that cost five figures more . But a 141-percent jump is an anomaly to big to be explained by enthusiast demand. The real reason behind the spike? It's likely due to the car's refresh, which occurred in early 2024 . When a car is replaced or refreshed, its assembly plant has to be shut down to retool for new body panels and other updates. The pause in production means dealers aren't receiving as many units, which leads to a temporary sales slump. That's what likely happened here. Dealers probably weren't able to sell many Elantra Ns last May simply because they didn't have any in stock. So comparatively, sales jumped in 2025, when inventory normalized. The addition of an automatic transmission also likely helped. That's just a theory, of course. We've reached out to Hyundai for a more concrete explanation. We'll be sure to update this article when we hear back. Either way, for the Elantra N to have its best sales month ever in 2025, four years after it went on sale, is impressive. Enthusiast-focused cars usually have the opposite occur, with the biggest sales happening at the beginning of the lifecycle. This milestone is further proof people still want affordable, fun sedans.
