Now, as the mercury looks set to rise over 30C again, the team at Budget Insurance have shared some essential maintenance checks - including one 'strange' action.

Inspect the vehicle's battery
High temperatures can cause internal harm to the battery, and shorten its lifespan, YorkshireLive reports.
Signs a new battery is required include the vehicle taking longer than usual to start and the interior lights are dimming as you crank the engine.
Keep tyres at correct pressure
During hot weather, tyres tend to expand, which can cause the rubber to crack and heighten the risk of a blowout.
Motorists should ensure their tyres are up to UK and EU standards by having a tread depth of at least 1.6mm, and are also inflated to the correct pressure.
Top up fluids
Coolant is key to preventing your engine from overheating during the hotter months.
The Budget Insurance team said: "Strange as it may sound, you should top it up with both water and antifreeze, because a lack of the latter could damage your engine when temperatures begin to drop."
Plan your route
It's always smart to research which service stations and charging points you'll pass along your journey.

Chris Lawson, Budget Insurance's head of car insurance, said: "With tens of millions of leisure journeys made by car over the summer months, motorists should ensure their vehicle is roadworthy before they set off, whether on holiday or for a day trip.
"Cars can struggle at this time of year, contending with hot temperatures and traffic jams, so it's important that drivers do all they can to minimise the risk of breaking down."

When Vasseur took charge of Ferrari, he became the latest in a long line of team principals tasked with ending the title drought for F1's most famous and successful team. But he knew it would take time. Ferrari's success through 2024, when it won five races and finished just 14 points shy of McLaren in the constructors' championship, indicated the progress the team had made under Vasseur. Yet it failed to maintain that momentum going into 2025 and Hamilton's arrival, leaving it winless after the opening 13 races of the season. When a couple of reports in the Italian media emerged ahead of last month's Canadian Grand Prix, Vasseur came out swinging. He said he always knew he'd been 'exposed' as Ferrari team principal, such is the pressure and demand for success in that role. But he was unhappy at suggestions there could be changes within the team, saying it was 'completely disrespectful' to those working at Ferrari. Advertisement Vasseur also had the backing of Hamilton, the seven-time world champion who he helped lure away from Mercedes. The pair first met in junior categories, and stayed close friends through the following two decades. 'I'm here to work with the team but also with Fred,' Hamilton said. 'I want Fred here. Ferrari's key car struggle this year has surrounded its inability to find a comfortable setup window for Hamilton or teammate Charles Leclerc, as well as not being able to run too low to the ground due to a plank wear issue that got both its cars disqualified at the Chinese Grand Prix in March for breaching the rules. The team brought an updated rear suspension to the last race in Belgium that was targeted at solving the issue. Leclerc reported positive feedback, having qualified and finished the race in third, while Hamilton was able to charge from a pit lane start to cross the line seventh. The extended contract gives Vasseur the support and stability to get his vision in place at Ferrari. One thing he has previously mentioned is the 'inertia' he feels when trying to get pieces in place to build up a team, given the lengths of contract gardening leaves and the difficulty of signing technical personnel from other team. Two key figures, technical director Loic Serra and deputy team principal Jerome d'Ambrosio, arrived at the end of last year from Mercedes, serving as a boost to Vasseur's backroom team. BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Ferrari handed team principal Fred Vasseur a new contract on Thursday in a sign of 'trust in Fred's leadership' following speculation about his future, with the Italian team yet to win a Formula 1 race in 2025. In an announcement ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, Ferrari said the new deal was a 'multiple-year contract,' without giving further details. Lewis Hamilton gave Vasseur his backing last month after reports in Italian media suggested his job could be in question. Ferrari last won a race in October and neither Hamilton nor Charles Leclerc has consistently been able to challenge the leading McLaren drivers. 'Today we want to recognize what has been built and commit to what still needs to be achieved,' Ferrari chief executive Benedetto Vigna said in a statement. 'It reflects our trust in Fred's leadership — a trust rooted in shared ambition, mutual expectations and clear responsibility. Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari boss, Fred Vasseur, has signed a new multi-year deal with the Italian Formula One team. Vasseur's position has been under scrutiny this season with Ferrari yet to land a single win outside of Hamilton's sprint victory in China in March. Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has even been linked with the job since he was ousted earlier this month. However, in a statement released ahead of this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix – the concluding round before the summer break – Ferrari said in a statement: 'Scuderia Ferrari HP is pleased to announce that it has extended, with a multiple-year contract, its agreement with Fred Vasseur, who will continue as team principal for the coming Formula One seasons. 'Fred joined the Scuderia at the beginning of 2023, bringing with him extensive motorsport experience and a proven ability to develop talent and build competitive teams across all levels of racing. Since then, he has laid a solid foundation with the ambition of returning Ferrari to the top of Formula One. 'Renewing Fred's contract reflects Ferrari's determination to build on the foundations laid so far. His ability to lead under pressure, embrace innovation, and pursue performance aligns fully with Ferrari's values and long-term ambitions. Hamilton said at last week's round in Belgium that he had staged meetings with all of Ferrari's key figures – including chairman John Elkann, CEO Benedetto Vigna and Vasseur – and submitted two documents outlining his vision as to why the Italian giants are not up to speed. Ferrari's last world drivers' title came in 2007, with their most recent constructors' crown the following year.
