Auburn will formally retire QB Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey during game against Georgia
The ceremony will take place during Auburn's home game against rival Georgia on Oct. 11.
Newton will join Pat Sullivan (No. 7), Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Terry Beasley (No. 88) as former Tigers football players whose numbers are formally retired. The jerseys of Sullivan and Beasley were retired following Sullivan's 1971 Heisman Trophy season, and Jackson's number was retired as part of Auburn's football centennial celebration in 1992.
No one has worn No. 2 at Auburn since Newton and the Tigers beat Oregon in the Bowl Championship Series national title game for the 2010 season. But soon it will be officially out of service.
'Auburn will always be home to me,' Newton said in a statement. 'The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired ... is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!'
One of the most decorated players in Auburn and Southeastern Conference history, Newton led Auburn to conference and national titles with a perfect 14-0 record. He threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores. He became the first player in SEC history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season.
'Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player,' Auburn athletic director John Cohen said. 'Retiring Cam's jersey number is a fitting way to celebrate his lasting impact on Auburn University and Auburn Athletics for all time.'

CHICAGO (AP) — Freddy Peralta allowed one hit and struck out six batters and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Chicago Cubs 7-0 in the first half of a Monday doubleheader. All-Star pitcher Peralta (15-5, 2.78 ERA) shut Chicago out over six innings to help Milwaukee advance to an MLB-best record of 79-45. The Brewers, which had their franchise-record 14-game winning streak snapped by the Reds on Sunday, have won 23 of 28 games since the break. Brice Turang and Caleb Durbin each had two hits, two RBIs and a solo home run to lead the way. Reliever Drew Pomeranz retired the ensuing batter to escape the inning with a one-run deficit. Chicago called up two hitters on Monday in Luke Little and Gavin Hollowell. Little's throwing error in the sixth allowed a run to score, while Hollowell gave up four earned runs on four walks and two hits in the seventh. Sinner vows to play US Open after Cincy retirement
Jannik Sinner insisted on Monday he would be ready to defend his US Open crown after illness forced him to retire from his Cincinnati Open final clash with Carlos Alcaraz. World number one Sinner -- who is due to to play in the US Open's revamped mixed doubles tournament on Tuesday -- conceded defeat to Alcaraz on Monday after going 5-0 down in the first set. The Italian did not speak to journalists after the loss, issuing a statement saying only that he would definitely play at the US Open in New York, where the singles main draw starts on Sunday. "I love Grand Slams a lot, they are the main tournaments for, for my season and my career," Sinner said. "The US Open is going to be a tough tournament, but in the same time, I'm looking forward to it if I'm ready, physically and mentally. "I will be ready to push ... now a couple of days of recovery, and then we get again back to work, and hopefully we'll be ready. "(The Open) is for sure, the main goal here in the US. For now, recovery is the most important." Sinner was due to partner Katerina Siniakova in the US Open mixed doubles, which gets under way in New York on Tuesday. Royals' Salvador Perez out with illness in series opener against Rangers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals scratched catcher Salvador Perez from the starting lineup of their series opener against the Texas Rangers on Monday night because of an illness. Perez was supposed to catch for starter Michael Wacha and bat fifth in the opener of an important four-game set between teams clinging to wild-card hope. Luke Maile will be behind the plate instead and bat eight in the lineup. Perez, a nine-time All-Star, is hitting .244 with 22 homers and 70 RBIs this season. Maile has become the primary backup in Kansas City after it sent Freddy Fermin to the Padres ahead of last month's nonwaiver trade deadline.
