Five police personnel among 16 arrested for cable theft

The Sun27-05-2025

SEPANG: Five police personnel, comprising two Sergeants and three Corporals, have been identified as the masterminds behind cable theft activities around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor for the past one year.
Selangor Police Chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan stated that these police officers, serving at District Police Headquarters (IPD) and stations in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, were among 16 suspects, including a woman, aged between 23 and 53, arrested in connection with the syndicate known as 'Sindiket Mulia' (Mulia Syndicate), named after its leader.
'Investigations found that they 'leaked' some police information regarding crime prevention and so on. They (syndicate members) also received information from the involved police officers about areas with fewer patrols and so on,' he said at a press conference today which was also attended by Sepang District Police Chief ACP Norhizam Bahaman.
He added that all the police personnel have been under remand since May 23 to assist in investigations after being arrested on May 22 at several locations in Cheras and Kajang.
According to Hussein, the syndicate's activities were also aided by 'insiders,' namely technicians and security guards from companies appointed by Telekom Malaysia (TM).
He said these 'insiders' would inform the syndicate members which parts of the cable needed to be cut to prevent the alarm siren from sounding.
'This means that in every cable theft incident, it involved insiders themselves who showed them where they could steal easily, how to cut it easily, and even taught them where to cut to avoid the alarm sounding.
'So their modus operandi was that after receiving information from insiders about areas where cables could be easily stolen and police patrol information, they would carry out the cable theft activities,' he said.
He added that the stolen cables would then be taken to a plantation to be burned to extract valuable metal, namely copper, which would then be sold to scrap metal dealers.
Hussein said the syndicate is believed to have been active for the past year, with their masterminds being two men who each have 36 and 29 previous criminal cases, including drug-related offences.
'Initial investigations found that this syndicate had conducted 23 cable sale transactions at scrap metal shops around Semenyih, with estimated sales of approximately RM683,000. We believe this cable theft syndicate has committed more than 23 theft cases,' he said.
He stated that items seized by the police included a Toyota Hilux four-wheel-drive vehicle, a Proton Perdana car, a Mitsubishi Fuso Canter lorry along with 1.2 tons of metal, and metal-cutting equipment.
He said the case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code (Theft), Section 431A of the Penal Code (Mischief by injury to telegraph cable, wire, etc.), and Section 29(1) of the Minor Offences Act 1955 (Fraudulent possession of property).
Hussein also mentioned that cable theft cases involving TM and Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor account for one-third of the total cases nationwide, or 208 cases for the first four months of this year.
According to him, during the same period, a total of 649 cases of TM and TNB cable theft were recorded nationwide.

Prisoner escapes gallows, gets seven years for killing cellmate

TAIPING: An oil palm plantation worker escaped the death penalty after the High Court here today sentenced him to seven years' jail on an amended charge of manslaughter involving the death of a detainee at Taiping Prison six years ago. Judge Noor Ruwena Md Nurdin handed down the sentence on Mohd Nizam Shah Shahruddin, 40, after he pleaded guilty to the amended charge under Section 304(b) of the Penal Code for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. He was previously charged under Section 302 for murder. The prison term was ordered to begin from the date of his arrest on Aug 29, 2019. Nizam was suspected of causing the death of Chua Teng Wooi, 41, at the Taiping Prison remand cell at about 9.30pm on the same day. Noor Ruwena said the decision was reached after considering the facts of the case, submissions by both the prosecution and defence, as well as the statements of the accused and witnesses. The court accepted that Nizam had raised reasonable doubt regarding any intent to kill, stating he was angered by the victim's behaviour and intended only to "teach him a lesson." According to the judge, testimony revealed that Chua had been beaten by multiple detainees in the remand cell due to his habit of defecating indiscriminately, believed to be caused by diarrhoea. The court also noted uncertainties over whether the accused and others were responsible for the lung injuries that caused the victim's death, citing testimony suggesting the injuries may have resulted from a fall in the prison toilet due to poor lighting. "The accused's statement that he had awakened other inmates to help the deceased after the fall, and had carried the deceased, was not disputed. The affidavit stating that other detainees had also assaulted the victim was similarly unchallenged," said Noor Ruwena. Deputy public prosecutor Sally Chay Mei Ling led the prosecution, while counsel Rajit Singh Tara Singh represented the accused.

Cops bust Alstonia gang with arrest of nine, seizure of drugs worth RM5.1mil

SHAH ALAM: Police busted a drug trafficking syndicate known as the Alstonia Gang after arresting nine suspects, including a foreign woman, and seizing various types of drugs worth RM5.11 million in five separate raids around Kuala Lumpur and Selangor on Tuesday (June 3). Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said among those arrested were the gang leader, a local man working as an e-hailing driver and his foreign lover, who are believed to have been actively carrying out drug trafficking activities for the past eight months. He said that in the first raid on a house in Bukit Jalil at about 5.50 pm, they nabbed a man and a foreign woman and seized MDMA (methylenedioxymethamphetamine) powder and juices suspected of containing drugs, each weighing 4,656 grammes and 3,000 millilitres. "The second raid was conducted on a house in Semenyih and led to the arrest of a man and the seizure of powdery substances believed to be MDMA drugs weighing 230 grammes, followed by a third raid at 6.10 pm in Puchong where a male suspect was held and 966.10 grammes of ecstasy seized. "At 10.30pm, we conducted raid number four on a house in Kajang and arrested a man and seized 110 vape cartridges suspected of containing 2,880 grammes of drugs," he told a media conference here today. Hussein said the suspect then led police to a house in Kajang, where they seized MDMA powder weighing 21,452 grammes, ketamine (4,722 grammes), ecstasy pills (641 grammes) and erimin 5 pills weighing an estimated 1,960 grammes. He said that following interrogation, police then arrested three men and a woman around Selangor and Kuala Lumpur who are believed to be involved with the syndicate. "In addition to the syndicate leader and his lover, who has lived in the country for the past 10 years, seven other suspects, all aged between 24 and 38, worked as food traders, personal shoppers and barbers. "Six of them tested positive for drugs and three tested negative, while three of them also had previous records related to crime and drugs," he said. Hussein said the syndicate targeted entertainment centres around the Klang Valley to sell to individuals via face-to-face interaction and also online. He added that police also seized five vehicles - Proton Preve, Toyota Vios, Hyundai Sonata, BMW 320i and Honda Civic - jewellery, watches, LV-brand handbags and various cash denominations, with the total seizure amounting to RM341,449.16. "This success is a result of the intelligence we carried out for two months and all suspects have been remanded for seven days, with the case being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952," he said. – BERNAMA

Engineer duped of over RM1.5m in online investment scam

GEORGE TOWN: A 40-year-old engineer working in the Middle East has lodged a police report after allegedly losing more than RM1.5 million to an online investment scam. Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Datuk Hamzah Ahmad said the man claimed he was cheated in a non-existent investment scheme, resulting in total losses of RM1,532,563. According to Hamzah, the victim's ordeal began in November last year, when he became acquainted with a woman over the phone and later developed a romantic relationship with her. "The suspect then persuaded the victim to join an investment platform called GoldenCrimson, which offered various packages — Junior Room, Intermediate Room, Superior Room, and Supreme Room — with returns depending on the package selected. "The victim was given a customer service number and a website link, to register," he said in a statement today. Hamzah said the victim initially invested RM90,510 and received returns amounting to RM108,611. "Believing the investment was profitable, the victim proceeded to make 103 transactions into 31 different accounts between Dec 2 last year and Mar 8 this year, totalling RM1,532,563. "He realised he had been scammed when he was unable to withdraw the supposed profits of RM4,131,671 via the application. The suspect even asked for additional capital contributions to facilitate the withdrawal," he added. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for fraud. Hamzah urged the public to be cautious and not fall for investment offers not recognised by authorities such as Bank Negara Malaysia, the Securities Commission Malaysia, and the Companies Commission of Malaysia. He advised the public to verify the legitimacy of such schemes with relevant agencies or consult the nearest police station before committing to any investment, especially those offered online.
