Zscaler has unveiled innovative updates to the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange platform, empowering businesses to extend Zero Trust Everywhere—across users, applications, devices, clouds, and branch locations. Unified Appliance for Zero Trust Branch : Zscaler's Zero Trust Branch redefines enterprise security and networking with a unified appliance that secures communications between branches, campuses, and factories, and segments OT and IoT devices within them including legacy OT, with no downtime. The solution also provides newly introduced disposable jumpboxes that enables contractors secure, time-bound access to critical systems. By eliminating the need for firewalls, legacy NAC, cumbersome VLAN configurations and VDI for remote access, organizations can stop lateral threat movement with unparalleled efficacy. This approach not only elevates security, but also dramatically reduces complexity and costs, empowering businesses to modernize and scale faster without compromise. Blockchain, often linked to cryptocurrencies and speculative bubbles, is moving beyond digital coins and is now serving as a backbone for trust and verification, tackling accountability challenges across industries. For decades, letters of credit have been the financial backbone of international trade. These complex banking instruments guarantee that a seller will be paid once goods are shipped and verified, while buyers are assured they receive exactly what they ordered. They give multinational corporations the confidence to do business across oceans and borders, knowing that a trusted financial middleman, the bank, stands behind every transaction. But for small businesses and everyday people, such safeguards have remained out of reach. Engaging banks or lawyers to underwrite a modest import deal or freelance assignment is impractical, given the costs involved. Instead, trust in small-scale transactions has often come down to handshakes, goodwill, and when things go wrong, messy disputes that sometimes end in court. Now developers at North Carolina State University have adapted blockchain-powered smart contracts, digital agreements that automatically execute once conditions are met, to give small businesses or importers, contractors, and freelancers the same level of trust and security long reserved for global corporations.'Letters of credit give big businesses confidence to trade across borders,' says Brandon McConnell, an associate research professor who helped develop the tool. 'But imagine if small businesses could tap into the same kind of assurance. Blockchain lets us do that at a scale that works for everyday people.'The university explained that at the heart of the system are smart contracts, self-executing pieces of code that run on blockchain networks. Unlike traditional contracts that depend on trust, signatures, and sometimes lawyers to enforce, smart contracts are automated. They are programmed to release funds, transfer digital assets, or trigger next steps only when pre-agreed conditions are met. Digital contractFor example, when a homeowner hires a contractor to renovate a kitchen, instead of handing over money upfront or relying on a verbal promise, the homeowner places the funds into a secure digital contract. The contract specifies milestone. Demolish old cabinets, install plumbing, finish countertops. As each milestone is verified, the smart contract automatically releases a portion of the payment. If the contractor fails to complete the work, the money stays locked. If the homeowner refuses to pay after the work is finished, the contractor still receives what is owed. Neither party has to chase lawyers or go to arbitration; the contract executes itself. This shift, says co-lead author Lt. Col. Mat Fukuzawa, could address one of the biggest problems in small-scale contracting, distrust. 'General contracting jobs are notorious for misunderstandings and disputes,' he explains. 'Today, the only fallback is litigation or arbitration, which adds cost and stress. Smart contracts could make trust the default instead of the exception.'What makes the tool particularly powerful is its flexibility. The team designed it to handle multiple layers of complexity. A single project can involve multiple smart contracts overseeing different aspects of the agreement, scope of work, payment schedules, arbitration, proof of licensing, or even insurance verification. Once both sides sign, the blockchain records the entire agreement in a tamper-proof ledger. That record cannot be altered, which prevents either party from quietly changing terms or disputing what was agreed to later. This design also allows for real-world messiness. Proof-of-concept tests showed the system can manage scenarios where contractors abandon a job halfway, clients dispute workmanship, or either side fails to meet obligations. Depending on the coded conditions, the contract can pause payments, return funds, or trigger arbitration. AccessibilityThe difference is accessibility. Banks charge significant fees to underwrite letters of credit, making them viable only for large shipments of goods worth millions of dollars. By contrast, smart contracts run at a fraction of the cost, making them practical for deals as small as a freelance design gig or a kitchen remodel. That lowered barrier could open up an entirely new layer of financial security for small businesses. 'This technology has practical utility across sectors,' McConnell says. 'Contractors, designers, freelancers … people want low-cost assurance that everyone will keep their word.'For small businesses, which often operate on thin margins and cannot afford lengthy legal battles, this kind of low-cost assurance could be transformative. Disputes that once threatened livelihoods could be prevented or resolved automatically. Freelancers, who frequently deal with late payments or clients disappearing, could work with more confidence. And homeowners taking on expensive renovations could avoid nightmare scenarios where money is lost to unreliable contractors. The team behind the project has published two open-access papers detailing their design: Implementing A Letter of Credit Style Business Process for Small-Scale Contracting Using Smart Contracts and Mechanisms for Dealing With the Unexpected in Small-Scale Contracting Using Smart Contracts. Although the potential is enormous, there is also the human factor. Not all disputes are clear-cut, and not everything can be neatly coded into software. Quality of work, for example, is often subjective. Against a backdrop of economic uncertainty and rapid technological disruption, African CX leaders are under more pressure than ever to deliver value that is both measurable and meaningful. But what does 'value' really mean in 2025? And how are Africa's most trusted brands redefining customer connection, trust, and growth? Ahead of the summit, three headline speakers, Tatiana Ndlovu (Nedbank Africa), Zain Naidoo (Dischem), and Ben Phillips (Fujitsu), shared exclusive insights on the state of customer experience across the continent. The New Trust Economy 'The most urgent challenge right now is the digital divide and with it, a crisis of trust,' says Tatiana Ndlovu, Executive Head of Marketing for Nedbank Africa. 'Without reliable access, digital transformation can't fulfil its promise. But even where access exists, trust breaks down when consent isn't clear and customer data isn't handled transparently.' Ndlovu warns that customers today aren't just choosing brands, they're choosing ethics. 'Top companies are moving fast to rebuild that trust,' she says, 'investing in transparent data frameworks, localised content, and frontline empowerment. It's not just digital, it is human.' From Broadcast to Bonding Zain Naidoo, Head of Digital at Dischem, agrees, but he's focused on how brands communicate. 'We have entered a phase where blasting customers with generic content doesn't cut it. People want to be seen, heard, and helped, not just sold to.' He sees the future of CX in Africa being about dialogue over delivery. 'It's not enough to be efficient. The next three years are about moving from broadcasting to bonding, connecting with customers through data that feels personal, not invasive.' Naidoo also notes the organisational change required to get there. 'The brands doing it best are tearing down internal silos. CX, digital, marketing, they are building integrated strategies around shared outcomes. If your teams are still working in isolation, the first step is to get everyone in a room and walk the customer journey together.' Intent Over Metrics But is more data always the answer? Ben Phillips, Head of the CX Performance Centre at Fujitsu Europe, doesn't think so. 'We're drowning in data. Surveys, scores, dashboards, we don't need more of them. What we need is clarity. We need to communicate to teams, clearly and simply, what customer experience looks like in their role.' Phillips calls out one of the industry's most enduring myths: that 'CX is everyone's job.' 'It's a well-meaning sentiment, but in practice it becomes meaningless unless people understand what that actually requires of them. We need to stop speaking in generalities and start giving teams specific, role-relevant actions they can take.' Why CEM Africa Matters Now Now in its 13th year, CEM Africa Summit has become the essential annual gathering for African CX leaders, and the 2025 edition is set to be the most strategic yet. From AI-powered service design to cross-channel orchestration, and from privacy-by-design to customer trust recovery, the agenda features practical insights across financial services, retail, telecommunications, and public services. Image credit: Getty Images Business leaders and executives in the UAE are demonstrating unprecedented trust in artificial intelligence (AI), according to new research released by technology services provider A significant 79 per cent of UAE business decision-makers now trust AI to allocate budgets across their organisations, decisions that could directly influence individual compensation. The same percentage expressed confidence in AI's ability to manage talent, including recruitment, performance evaluation, and redundancy planning. Additionally, 80 per cent of respondents were comfortable with AI overseeing critical health and safety operations within their companies. Read- This marks a substantial shift in mindset, indicating a new era where AI is no longer seen as a tool for back-office automation, but as a trusted decision-maker in high-stakes areas. Beyond business: AI as a life advisor Remarkably, this trust in AI extends well beyond the workplace. According to Endava's research, four in five respondents said they would trust fully automated systems to make personal career decisions, from advising on promotions to suggesting salary trajectories and job changes. The same percentage expressed confidence in AI for personal financial planning, including investments and retirement strategies. Even health recommendations, traditionally the domain of human professionals, saw similar levels of trust. David Boast, General Manager, UAE and KSA at Endava, believes this reflects more than just technological optimism. 'Trust is the critical enabler of any AI strategy,' he said. 'The UAE's clear national vision, its youthful and tech-savvy population, and its digital-first mindset are combining to give organisations a unique opportunity to innovate with confidence.' While other regions remain cautious, often bogged down by concerns over job displacement and AI ethics, UAE businesses appear ready to move forward boldly, supported by a workforce that is not just accepting of AI, but eager to embrace it. Designing emotionally intelligent AI As trust in AI grows, experts say the next step is making systems more emotionally responsive, especially when dealing with sensitive or stressful situations. 'Ultimately, the path to trust isn't through forcing AI into the foreground, but by designing it to quietly empower the experiences consumers already value,' said Jessica Constantinidis, Innovation Officer – EMEA at ServiceNow. 'By embedding AI into service architecture in a way that's invisible but impactful, organisations in the UAE can deliver emotionally intelligent experiences that meet high expectations, without sacrificing efficiency.' Despite the growing trust in AI, many consumers still crave human connection. The research reveals that 68 per cent of UAE consumers prefer to speak with a real person, not due to a resistance to technology, but because they value empathy and nuance. This preference is especially strong when emotions are heightened, such as during financial disputes or service failures. The hybrid model: Best of both worlds The study makes it clear that while customers want fast and efficient service, they also seek reassurance. A full 85 per cent of UAE consumers say they prefer self-service options, yet their confidence in AI remains fragile when it comes to emotionally charged or complex issues. 'The answer lies in embracing a hybrid model,' Constantinidis explained. 'AI systems should not be standalone tools but part of a broader support ecosystem. For routine tasks, automation can deliver speed. But during moments of high stress, there must be intelligent pathways to human support.' For example, AI should be able to detect distress signals, not just through language, but through behavior patterns, such as repeated actions or extended time to resolution. If a customer isn't getting results within two interactions, the system should seamlessly escalate the issue to a human agent. 'That's not a failure of AI, that's smart design,' Constantinidis said. 'Too often, companies bolt AI onto existing policies without rethinking the experience. True transformation means reimagining customer support with hybrid experiences built from the ground up.'
