News agency ANI on Monday had reported, quoting sources that during the 58th Annual Meeting of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Milan, finance minister
urged ADB President Masato Kanda to reduce financial assistance to Pakistan.
India has significantly reduced diplomatic ties with Pakistan following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people and injured several others, mostly tourists.
At the upcoming International Monetary Fund (IMF) board meeting on May 9, India reportedly plans to voice concerns regarding Pakistan's bailout arrangement, according to the IMF website.
India intends to approach FATF (
Financial Action Task Force
), the global watchdog for money laundering and terrorist financing, requesting Pakistan's inclusion in the grey list as part of its strategy to limit Pakistan's funding sources, according to ANI.
A recent Moody's report indicated that continued India-Pakistan tensions could hamper Pakistan's ability to secure external financing and affect its foreign-exchange reserves. The report highlighted that Pakistan's current foreign exchange reserves are insufficient to cover its external debt payment requirements for the coming years.
While, the same assessment offered an optimistic outlook for India, noting its stable macroeconomic conditions, supported by sustained growth levels, robust public investment, and strong private consumption patterns.

, an action that will gradually diminish Pakistan's water resources.
Also on Monday, sharing a post on X, the Finance Ministry said during the meet, "Sitharaman reiterated that India focuses on private sector-led economic growth and has been consistently creating a conducive policy and regulatory ecosystem through bold initiatives such as the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, Corporate Tax Rate Reduction and GST implementation, Production-Linked Incentives, National Infrastructure Pipeline, GatiShakti National Master Plan, and StartupIndia, among others, for greater Ease of Doing Business."
"The finance minister emphasised that India offers opportunities for ADB to pilot new, innovative financing products and models," the post added.
The ADB President expressed "full support to India's development priorities, guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047."
Sitharaman is heading the Indian delegation of officials from the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, at the 58th Annual Meeting of ADB's Board of Governors, occurring from May 4 to 7 in Milan.

Infosys gets relief as DGGI drops Rs 32,403 crore GST demand notice

India's second-largest IT services firm Infosys has received relief in the goods and services tax (GST) demand notice for over Rs 30,000 crore. Infosys said it had received communication from the Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) 'closing' the pre-show cause notice proceedings for the financial years 2018–19 to 2021–22. In a regulatory filing, the firm said: 'With the receipt of today's communication from DGGI, this matter stands closed.' The GST amount as per the pre-show cause notice for this period was Rs 32,403 crore. 'The Company had on 3 August 2024 received a communication from DGGI closing the pre-show cause notice proceedings for the financial year 2017–18,' the company said in the filing. In July 2024, the DGGI had issued a pre-show cause notice to Infosys for Rs 32,403 crore, claiming that the firm had not paid GST under the reverse-charge mechanism for services imported from its foreign branches during the period spanning July 2017 to March 2022.

DGGI closes GST proceedings against Infosys

Bengaluru: The Director General of GST Intelligence (DGGI) closed the pre-show cause notice proceedings against Infosys in the Rs 32,000 crore tax controversy. "In continuation of our earlier communications on July 31, 2024, Aug 1, 2024, and Aug 3, 2024, on GST, this is to inform that the company today received a communication from the DGGI closing the pre-show cause notice proceedings for the financial years 2018-19 to 2021-22," Infosys said in a stock exchange filing on Friday. "It may be noted that the company received and responded to a pre-show cause notice issued by DGGI for the period July 2017 to March 2022 on the issue of non-payment of IGST under the reverse charge mechanism. The GST amount as per the pre-show cause notice for this period was Rs 32,403 crore. The company received a communication from DGGI on Aug 3, 2024, closing the pre-show cause notice proceedings for the financial year 2017-2018. With the receipt of today's communication from DGGI, this matter stands closed," the filing said. Last year, the DGGI filed an incident report which showed intelligence gathered by the officers of the DGGI Bangalore Zonal Unit indicated that Infosys received services from overseas branches and did not pay IGST (integrated goods and services tax) under RCM (reverse charge mechanism) on the import of services. The actions taken by DGGI were considered to be an "over-interpretation" of the law, according to tax officers and consultants who believe that the regulations clearly outline the proper handling of transactions between branches and headquarters. Operators to lose licence if private vehicles used for rental

Panaji: State govt on Friday decided to issue an ordinance for the licence cancellation of rental car and bike operators who deploy private vehicles for commercial use. Action would be taken against such operators as well as individuals who do not have a licence to run a rental vehicle business but give private vehicles for hire to tourists. 'The transport department will initiate an ordinance for licence cancellation of rent-a-car/bike operators using private vehicles for commercial use,' Sawant said. Last year, the traffic cell of Goa police issued more than 600 challans for using private vehicles for commercial purposes. Once the challan is issued, vehicle owners must appear before court to pay the challan. Sawant chaired a meeting at Police HQ, Panaji, to review these matters and the progress of the border checkpost infrastructure and enforcement readiness. The meeting was attended by the IGP, DIG, transport director, North Goa SP, transport SP, and PWD principal chief engineer. During the meeting, the transport department pointed to the loss to the exchequer due to the use of private vehicles for commercial purposes and the nonpayment of GST. Sawant said that only 10% of private vehicles were identified and challaned for being used for commercial purposes. The transport department noted that the Transport Act was amended in 2018, allowing the main rental car/bike operators to have agreements with their close aides and start the business, but those individuals were exempted from paying GST. Sawant directed the transport department to make necessary changes to address the revenue leakage. On another front, the green initiative 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' is to be implemented at all police stations, Sawant said. Moreover, he said govt is working to build a seamless, transparent, and citizen-friendly mobility and enforcement ecosystem on Goa's borders. Sawant reviewed infrastructure readiness at Patradevi and Keri (North Goa) and Mollem and Polem (South Goa). He discussed land availability for developing way-side public amenities and IOCL petrol pumps, reviewed application development progress by ITG, and rollout plans of the traffic SP. He also deliberated on the public notification strategy, automated border monitoring, and integration with VAHAN. As for rental car and bike operators, revenue minister Atanasio 'Babush' Monserrate blamed them for causing accidents and harming the taxi business in the state.
