KUCHING (May 16): A total of 32 teachers from across the country will soon gain valuable experience serving at international schools in the United Kingdom under the Global Immersion For Future-Ready Teachers (GIFT) programme.
In disclosing this, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the teachers were recipients of the IKON Award, Innovative Teacher Award, Special Education Award, and Distinguished Teacher Award, which were awarded in conjunction with this year's national-level Teachers' Day celebration in Kuching.
'To honour and empower these educators so they can continue excelling and becoming exemplary figures in the profession, the Ministry of Education will sponsor their placement in the UK, where they will participate in upskilling programmes and engage in professional exchange with educators there.
'Congratulations to all 32 teachers who will be going on this fully sponsored journey,' she said during the 54th national-level Teachers' Day celebration at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.
She also revealed that the ministry has allocated RM4 million to support the programme, which also covers short-term overseas training for selected teachers and officers in specialised fields.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who officiated at the event, proposed that the number of teachers sent abroad for global exposure be increased tenfold – from 32 to 320 – to better prepare Malaysian educators for the future of education.
'I think sending 32 teachers to the UK to broaden their mindset is a good starting point, and we welcome it if the number could be increased,' he told a press conference after the event.
'This is about motivation and recognition for our teachers. I will support the Ministry of Education's efforts to seek additional funding for this cause,' he added.
Also present at the event were Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi; State Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn; State Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah; Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang; and Education director-general Datuk Azman Adnan. Umno must have 7 ministers with Tengku Zafrul's exit, Zahid tells Anwar
Published on: Saturday, May 31, 2025 Published on: Sat, May 31, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he will get legal advice on whether Tengku Zafrul Aziz is liable for a RM100 million fine having violated an agreement signed before the 15th general election. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has called for the prime minister to ensure his party is restored to its quota of seven ministers in the Cabinet following Tengku Zafrul Aziz's resignation from the party. Zahid said Umno has only six ministers now, Bernama reported. 'For me, what matters more is that Umno is represented by seven ministers in the Cabinet. Although we are not sure if Tengku Zafrul's appointment was under Umno's capacity or otherwise, the assumption is that it was because he was from Umno. 'With Tengku Zafrul no longer in Umno, the party has a right to request that a minister's portfolio be given to us,' he was quoted as saying after an event in Sarawak today. Zahid also confirmed that Umno has officially received Tengku Zafrul's resignation letter, which was submitted to the party's executive secretary, Sumali Reduan, earlier this morning. 'Yesterday, when we checked (after the news broke), we had not received the letter,' he said. Advertisement 'But this morning, after checking again, it was confirmed that the letter had been sent to the executive secretary.' On whether Tengku Zafrul violated any agreements signed during the 15th general election (GE15) by leaving the party, Zahid said he would consult Umno's legal advisers. He pointed out that party candidates who leave may face a RM100 million fine based on their sworn statements. 'Tengku Zafrul contested and lost, but was reappointed as a senator. So I need to check with Umno's legal advisers first,' he said. Tengku Zafrul announced yesterday that he had resigned from Umno and all party positions, and would be applying to join PKR, led by Anwar. Citing 'compatibility and suitability', Tengku Zafrul said he decided to leave Umno after seeking advice from friends within and outside the party. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Zahid urges Madani govt to restore Umno's seven-minister quota after Tengku Zafrul's exit

The Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman said the party was previously represented by seven ministers, but with Tengku Zafrul's departure, only six remained. 'The most important thing is that Umno is represented by seven ministers in the federal Cabinet. While we are unsure whether Tengku Zafrul's appointment as minister was made under Umno's capacity, our assumption was that he was part of the party. 'If that's the case, then Umno now only has six full ministers. With Tengku Zafrul exiting Umno, the party is justified in requesting one ministerial seat to be allocated to us,' he said at a press conference after officiating the Pekebun Kecil Makmur and Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda)-level pre-Gawai celebration held at Kampung Raeh Baru here today. Yesterday, Tengku Zafrul, who is also Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry, announced his resignation from his roles as Umno Supreme Council member, Kota Raja Division chief, and Umno member. In a statement yesterday, he expressed his intention to join Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) to PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh. Zahid confirmed that he had received Tengku Zafrul's resignation letter today, which had been sent to Umno's executive secretary. However, he added that he would seek legal advice to determine whether Tengku Zafrul had violated any agreements signed when he stood as a BN candidate during the 15th General Election (GE15). 'For candidates in the last general election, if they leave the party, they can be fined RM100 million based on their sworn declaration. 'Tengku Zafrul contested in the election but was defeated, later being appointed as a Senator. So, I need to verify this matter with our legal advisors first,' he said.

Teacher claims trial to molesting student in dorm warden's room
The Melaka sessions court allowed Aiezad Asni to post bail at RM9,000 and ordered him to surrender his passport. (File pic) PETALING JAYA : A 38-year-old teacher at an Islamic secondary school in Jasin, Melaka, has been charged with molesting a male student in the dormitory warden's room last week. Aiezad Asni, 38, pleaded not guilty after the charge was read before Melaka sessions court judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah, Utusan Malaysia reported. Aiezad was charged with committing physical sexual assault on the victim, 15, by rubbing the student's private part for sexual purposes. He is accused of committing the offence at 5am in the dormitory warden's room of the school on May 23. The charge framed under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 is punishable by up to 20 years in jail and whipping if convicted. Deputy public prosecutor Nazrin Ali Rahim did not offer bail but suggested that the court fix the amount at RM30,000 if it wished to grant bail. Nazrin also urged the court to set additional conditions, such as requiring the accused to surrender his passport. Lawyer Farriz Minarwan Basaruddin pleaded for a lower bail amount, saying his client had a family to look after and had been transferred to the district education office since Wednesday. The judge allowed Aiezad to post bail at RM9,000 and imposed the additional conditions requested by the prosecution. She fixed July 15 for case mention.
