One-take movie by Iranian director among 98 films competing at fest
2
Kolkata: Ninety-eight films, exploring diverse subjects, such as AI, the desire for hilsa in a patriarchal household and Kolkata's music shop, are vying for the top awards at the 8th South Asian Short Film Festival that started at Nandan on Monday.
Among the entries at the festival, launched by the Federation of Film Societies of India (Eastern Region), is a single-take film—'Spasm' —by an Iranian director and an Indian producer.
Directed by Sahra Asadollahi and produced by Deepankar Prakash, the short film, 'Spasm', is about what happens when a woman who has never acted in film goes for an audition that becomes a test of more than just her acting ability. "I met Sahra at a festival in Nepal in 2023.
Soon, we decided to collaborate and started work on this 27-minute-long film. Sahra, an actor in Iran, shot the film completely in Tehran, while I was in India.
She herself played the role of the woman in the film," said Prakash, whose 'Naanera' had won in the competition on Indian Language's Films at the Kolkata International Film Festival in 2022.

Finally, she is called for an audition, where the director and producer of an upcoming film interview her. From her father's horse to her 10-month-old baby—questions are flung at her from all quarters. Finally, a situation arises where she is compelled to believe she is rejected.
But the situation takes a different turn when she is told the confrontation was deliberately orchestrated to evaluate her acting skill.
In recent times, the long single-take shooting approach, especially after the success of 'Adolescence', has got cine enthusiasts talking. 'Spasm' is the first one-take film in competition at the South Asian Short Film Festival. What makes this film engaging is how minimalism has been effectively used to counter the challenges of filming by a woman director in Iran.
Shot inside one room with minimal production and sound design, 'Spasm' features only an animated Asadollahi seated in front of the camera. The camera angle is such that the faces of no other cast member, including the director and the producer, are visible. For many independent film-makers, who complain about shortage of funds and lack of infrastructure in this city, the film is a lesson on how big ideas, not big budgets, are important for good cinema.
"Sahra is unable to come to Kolkata now because of the situation in her country. But I will be at the festival," Prakash added.

Mohit Suri reveals Ahaan Panday auditioned for 'Saiyaara' with scenes from Ranbir Kapoor's 'Ae Dil Hai Mushkil' and Shahid Kapoor's 'Kabir Singh'
Filmmaker Mohit Suri has opened up about the unconventional journey of debutant actor Ahaan Panday in his new film 'Saiyaara'. In a candid chat, the director, who is gearing up for the release of the film, also revealed how producer Aditya Chopra sensed Panday's initial hesitation. Speaking to Bollywood Hungama, Suri shared that while Ahaan's audition reels featured intense scenes from ' Ae Dil Hai Mushkil ' and 'Kabir Singh', along with a comic bit from 'Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania', something still felt missing. 'I wasn't fully convinced,' Suri admitted. 'The tapes were good, but I couldn't see the raw spark I was looking for.' It wasn't until Suri decided to observe the young talent in a more casual environment that things changed. Describing a late-night outing with Ahaan and his friends, Suri recalled, 'He was too formal in meetings, kept calling me 'sir'. I told him to stop that. Within 15 minutes, I was bro.' It was that shift in comfort that helped Suri see the real Ahaan. 'Around 2 or 3 AM, I saw him sitting on top of the bar, not the stool, the bar itself, laughing, animated, just living the moment. That's when I saw my lead character. He had it in him all along. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! But once he shed that pressure, his natural energy emerged—enough to land him the role. Known for guiding newcomers in emotionally charged films like ' Aashiqui 2 ' and 'Ek Villain,' Suri said he prefers working with fresh talent. 'You play to their strengths and quietly support their weaker spots,' he said, confident that Ahaan fits perfectly into the intense romantic world of Saiyaara. Also starring debutante Aneet Padda, Saiyaara marks a bold step for Yash Raj Films into Gen-Z romance. The film's trailer, released on July 8, has already sparked strong online buzz ahead of its theatrical release. Saiyaara - Official Trailer

Other cast members include veteran actors like Mohan Babu, R. Sarathkumar, Madhoo, Preity Mukhundhan, Mukesh Rishi, Brahmaji, and Brahmanandam. The film's grand scale, elaborate sets, and emotional score by Stephen Devasi have been widely appreciated, even as the film struggled to sustain its initial box office surge. Etimes review for the film reads, "Kannappa scores high on visual and musical impact. Sheldon Chau's cinematography captures the beauty of forested landscapes and celestial moments with finesse, giving the film a rich visual texture. Some of the VFX elements fall short of the film's ambition, but the overall sincerity of the production shines through."
