Emma Navarro beats defending Wimbledon champ Barbora Krejcikova. There will be a first-time winner

LONDON: Emma Navarro describes herself as "stubborn" and her tennis as "scrappy." The American's attitude and game both were in just the right places at Wimbledon on Saturday, when she pulled off another Grand Slam victory over a defending champion by eliminating Barbora Krejcikova 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Sending an ill and dizzy Krejcikova home in the third round, the 10th-seeded Navarro extended a recent run of one-and-done winners at the All England Club and assured the grass-court major of yet another first-time women's champion.
"Something I take a lot of pride in is being tough and fighting till the last point, no matter what the circumstances are. It's something I always try to do," said Navarro, who was born in New York, grew up in South Carolina and won the 2021 NCAA championship for the University of Virginia. "I could never live with myself if I ever gave up. It's just not in my nature. I don't think it's in any of my family members' nature to ever give up on anything. I guess we're a stubborn bunch."
Krejcikova faded in the third set, getting her blood pressure checked at the changeover after Navarro broke her to lead 3-2 at No. 1 Court. Krejcikova ate a banana and drank liquids during the medical timeout, while Navarro walked to her guest box and spoke to her coach during the break in action.
When play resumed, Krejcikova showed clear signs of being in distress, often leaning over and placing her hands on her knees between points.
"I was actually feeling worse and worse," said Krejcikova, who was seeded 17th but now will tumble out of the top 70 in the WTA rankings. "It's very sad for me and very unfortunate."
This is hardly Navarro's first big win on a big stage. Last year, she eliminated Coco Gauff at Wimbledon to reach her first major quarterfinal. Then, in a rematch a couple of months later, Navarro won again at the U.S. Open — where Gauff was the 2023 champion — en route to her debut in a Slam semifinal.

Will Chad Johnson become Shannon Sharpe's successor at ESPN after the Super Bowl winner's shocking exit?

Shannon Sharpe ESPN exit and his replacement (Getty Images) Shannon Sharpe has been in the news, not for some good reasons. In a dramatic shake-up at ESPN, Sharpe's departure from First Take has opened the door for a fresh face to potentially step in and Chad Johnson is making it clear he wants the job. Just hours before news broke of Sharpe's exit, Johnson appeared on the show, charming the audience and teasing what looked like a candid audition for the now-vacant role. Chad Johnson eyes Shannon Sharpe's ESPN seat following First Take departure Shannon Sharpe's sudden departure comes in the wake of a legal battle that had kept him off the air since April. Though a settlement was reached in the $50 million lawsuit filed against him for alleged sexual misconduct, ESPN ultimately opted to sever ties with the former NFL star. According to The Athletic's Andrew Marchand, Sharpe requested that the announcement be delayed to avoid overshadowing his brother's Hall of Fame induction—an appeal that was reportedly denied. 'Obviously, I'm sure everybody's heard the news by now that I will not be returning to ESPN,' Sharpe said later that night on Nightcap. He added, 'I said, 'This coming out will overshadow everything [my brother's] worked his entire life for.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo And unfortunately, it didn't happen that way.' While ESPN has not officially linked Sharpe's exit to the lawsuit, the timing speaks volumes. His tenure, which began in August 2023 after leaving Undisputed, ended just shy of the two-year mark. Here comes Chad Johnson. The former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver, who co-hosts the Nightcap podcast with Sharpe, wasted no time making his pitch. During his recent appearance on First Take, Johnson playfully declared, 'I can get used to this for the next six months… I'm gonna start September 5th, if I'm not mistaken. Because Thursday Night Football, first week, so, I should be here Friday.' Host Molly Qerim's laughter and Stephen A. Smith's remote presence only fueled Johnson's confidence. 'The fact that you came off vacation for me, that lets me know you're trying to get things started a little early,' Johnson told Smith. 'Trying to preheat the oven, I like that. It's gonna be a great season.' Johnson's charisma and rapport with the First Take team didn't go unnoticed. Though there's no formal announcement yet, his timing—paired with ESPN's urgent need for a dynamic replacement—makes his candidacy one to watch. As ESPN turns the page from a turbulent chapter, Chad Johnson is positioning himself not just as a fill-in, but as a full-time spark ready to light up the studio this NFL season. What is Shannon Sharpe's comment on his ESPN exit? Shannon Sharpe has finally broken his silence following the announcement of his departure from ESPN. The NFL Hall of Famer expressed that his only regret was how the announcement may have taken attention away from Sterling Sharpe's moment of glory. 'The only thing I asked was, guys, could we wait until Monday? My brother's going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame,' Sharpe shared. He added that he feared the headlines would 'overshadow everything that he's worked his entire life for. ' Sharpe revealed he had apologized to Sterling personally, only to be met with brotherly grace: 'Bro, stop apologizing... I love you.' Despite his exit, Sharpe was full of appreciation for ESPN, saying the network gave him a broader platform to be himself. 'I was able to bring that to ESPN. So I'm very, very grateful for that,' he noted, adding, 'They did what they felt they needed to do. And I'm at peace with that.' FAQs 1: Why did Shannon Sharpe leave ESPN's First Take? Shannon Sharpe parted ways with ESPN following a lawsuit settlement involving allegations of sexual assault. Although he previously planned to return for the NFL preseason, ESPN ultimately decided to end the partnership. 2: Was Shannon Sharpe fired from ESPN because of the lawsuit? ESPN has not officially stated that the lawsuit caused Sharpe's exit. However, the decision came shortly after he settled a $50 million sexual assault lawsuit, suggesting a possible connection. 3: When was Shannon Sharpe last seen on First Take? Sharpe last appeared on First Take in late April 2025, before stepping away from the show amid the legal proceedings. Schick dismisses Leverkusen's Bundesliga chances after Wirtz, Xhaka exit

Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick says his team is not capable of fighting for the German Bundesliga title without new signings, after Granit Xhaka joined a string of title-winning players to leave the club. Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is faced with an even bigger rebuild as Leverkusen's new coach after midfielder Xhaka joined English Premier League side Sunderland. Attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz, right back Jeremie Frimpong and defender Jonathan Tah — all crucial to Leverkusen's league and cup double in 2024 — left the club this off-season and coach Xabi Alonso departed for Real Madrid. 'The most important players have gone and that obviously hurts,' Schick, who was Leverkusen's top scorer last season with 27 goals in 45 games, told Sky Sport Germany in an interview released late Wednesday. 'Right now, we're hoping that we can still get a couple of good players in, because we're not currently in a position where we're capable of fighting for the title.' 'He was a leader,' Schick said. 'He was the player with the most experience.' The bulk of Leverkusen's off-season spending so far has gone on American attacking midfielder Malik Tillman from PSV Eindhoven and former Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah. The club has also signed Brentford's highly-rated goalkeeper Mark Flekken. Schick, however, picked out a lesser-known name as his most impressive signing of the summer. Ibrahim Maza, a 19-year-old midfielder signed from second-tier German club Hertha Berlin, is 'really a good player,' he said.

Authorities abandon recovery of German Olympian killed in Pakistan

Authorities have abandoned efforts to recover the body of German Olympic biathlete Laura Dahlmeier, who died in a mountaineering accident in Pakistan this week. Attempts to recover her body were abandoned due to "dangerous" conditions at the site, Dahlmeier's management agency said Thursday.(REUTERS) Dahlmeier was confirmed dead on Wednesday, having been hit by falling rocks while climbing at an altitude of 5,700 metres (18,700 feet) on Laila Peak in the Karakoram range. Attempts to recover her body were abandoned due to "dangerous" conditions at the site, Dahlmeier's management agency said Thursday. In consultation with the Alpine Club of Pakistan, the agency said her relatives would "continue to monitor the situation... and are keeping the option of arranging a rescue at a later date". Several of Dahlmeier's colleages confirmed the two-time Olympic gold medallist had said she did not want her body recovered if it put any would-be rescuers at risk. German mountaineer Thomas Huber was part of a team who had attempted a rescue but told reporters on Thursday: "We have decided she should stay, because that was her wish." Another member of the rescue team, American Jackson Marvell told AFP it would be "disrespectful" to recover her body contrary to her wishes. Marvell said "the recovery of Laura's body will be possible, but it involves incredible risks, both on foot and by helicopter". Dahlmeier's climbing partner Marina Krauss, who was with her at the time of the incident, said at a press conference on Thursday the former Olympian did not move after being caught in a rockfall. "I saw Laura being hit by a huge rock and then being thrown against the wall. And from that moment on, she didn't move again," Krauss told reporters. Krauss said she was unable to reach Dahlmeier and called for outside support. "It was impossible for me to get there safely. "It was clear to me the only way to help her was to call a helicopter. She didn't move, she didn't show any signs (of movement). I called out to her, but there was no response." "She only had a chance if help arrived immediately," she said. Dahlmeier won seven world championship gold medals, and at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang she became the first woman biathlete to win both the sprint and the pursuit at the same Games. Dahlmeier retired from professional competition in 2019 at the age of 25.
