Dakota Ditcheva: Long layoff 'kind of worth it' to fight at PFL Africa debut
Dakota Ditcheva is glad to be back in action at PFL Champions Series: Africa following a period of inactivity that left her frustrated.
After being sidelined since October, Ditcheva revealed in April some of her disappointment with PFL not putting her back in the cage on a timeline she desired in an interview with MMA Junkie. Shortly thereafter, news came she would be returning to competition in the summer.
Although Ditcheva (14-0) said her comments caused some awkwardness with PFL behind the scenes, she said it ultimately worked out in her favor. She will now face Sumiko Inaba (8-1) on the July 19 card in Cape Town, the inaugural event for the PFL in South Africa.
"This sport takes you places you probably wouldn't be able to visit if it didn't have organizations like this taking it around the world," Ditcheva said. "You have to be very grateful with the opportunity you get in MMA and being able to be co-main event on a card like this to make history, it's crazy to me. I guess the wait this year was kind of worth it."
Ditcheva, 26, said her communication with the PFL brass has somewhat improved, along with her understanding of the hectic schedule the brass is pushing through to grow the brand across the globe. Whether she is part of that for the long term remains to be seen, because she said she is still "figuring a few things out" and negotiating specifics.
One thing Ditcheva is confident in, however, is more consistent activity. She said the company has obligations to honor, and if she gets past Inaba, who is a name she has to take "serious," then she will be eying the winner of the 2025 PFL World Tournament in the women's flyweight division.
"I haven't really got much direction yet," Ditcheva said. "I know they are going to keep me busy. They have to. You will see me fight again this year for sure. ... I'm hungry. How they have another champ this year when I won it last year? They should be challenging me, not all fighting each other to get another belt.
"Why am I not in that tournament defending my belt? It just makes me hungry. This fight isn't for a belt, so I'm still going to go with the same hunger, but I'm going to make a statement to everyone that the belt they're fighting for this year should be mine, not theirs."

Fares Ziam responds to surprise criticism of UFC Paris fight booking
Fares Ziam is aware of everyone's reaction to him drawing unranked Kaue Fernandes at UFC Paris, but he has an explanation. Ziam (17-4 MMA, 7-2 UFC) meets Fernandes (10-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) in a lightweight bout on Sept. 6 from Accor Arena. When his fight was announced, the comments section was showered with criticism toward the UFC's matchmaking and why Ziam hasn't been matched up with a ranked opponent. The 27-year-old previously told MMA Junkie that he'd rather have one more fight before taking on ranked opposition, but many thought he deserved a bigger name than Fernandes. Ziam addressed those comments. "Not very (surprised) because we talked with my manager, Ali Abdelaziz, we said maybe it's not the timing to fight a top-15 ranked guy," Ziam told MMA Junkie. "I need to work on my wrestling, work on my jiu-jitsu, everything. I need to get better, I need to evolve. It's OK, five-fight win streak is good, but I need more." While Ziam has impressed in his winning streak, including a Knockout of the Year contender over Matt Frevola, he wants to tighten up certain aspects of his ground game first. "Because I fought unranked guys and they took my back, they took the mount, they took top position," Ziam said. "And if a ranked guy takes (my back), it's not going to be like my last fight. I need to evolve in this, and I need to prove that I'm ready for the top 15. "Mike Davis, Matt Frevola, Claudio Puelles, those three guys took my back, had the mount position, too much top position. If you do that with a guy like Renato Moicano, Beneil Dariush, or someone like that, it's not good." Fernandes is riding some momentum after back-to-back wins over Mohammad Yahya and Guram Kutateladze. "He's a dangerous fighter, he has a good calf kick, he's dangerous – but honestly, I think I'm better everywhere," Ziam said of Fernandes. "So for me, it's a good fight, but he's still dangerous. I think with Kaue, I can do wrestling, striking, grappling. I can do anything, but just be careful for his calf kicks and his counters because he's a counter guy. So yeah, I can wrestle this fight."

Robert Whittaker looks forward to stern test in Reinier de Ridder at UFC on ABC 9
The UFC is in the midst of a month-long middleweight division showcase, and Robert Whittaker is well aware of it. "The middleweight division over the next few is just moving now," Whittaker told MMA Junkie on Tuesday. "I feel like it was all kind of still for a little bit, but now everything's moving. There are some big fights on the way." Next in a line of big fights involves the former 185-pound champion, Whittaker, on Saturday when he takes on Reinier de Ridder in the UFC on ABC 9 main event at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. Whittaker (26-8 MMA, 17-6 UFC) vs. de Ridder (20-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is happening on the heels of UFC 318 where Paulo Costa defeated Roman Kopylov and Brendan Allen beat Marvin Vettori in battles of ranked middleweights. The Aug. 9 UFC on ESPN 72 event is headlined by Roman Dolidze vs. Anthony Hernandez, which all leads to the biggest one the following week when Dricus Du Plessis puts his title on the line against Khamzat Chimaev in the UFC 319 headliner Aug. 16. With so much focus on the middleweight division, the onus is on Whittaker, who's No. 5 in the official UFC rankings, to make a statement against No. 12 de Ridder after getting quickly submitted by Chimaev in his most recent fight last October. "I want to bounce back," said Whittaker, who hasn't lost two fights in a row since his welterweight days in 2013-2014. "After losing, I've always gotten better and come back with a win. It's important for me to do that again to move toward the direction I want to go, which is that title." Whittaker said the biggest thing he learned from the Chimaev fight, in which he suffered a jaw injury from a vicious neck crank that forced him to submit, is that he "can't be complacent." Whittaker didn't elaborate on what he meant but specified there were things about his last training camp that he didn't like. "It's hard to explain, going to take forever to go through," Whittaker said. "It's hard. It's a bigger thing to unpack. I don't know. It is what it is. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose." In de Ridder, Whittaker is up against a fighter who's been on a roll since making his UFC debut last November. While Whittaker's taken his time to get back in the cage, de Ridder, a former ONE Championship two-division title holder, has rattled off three wins in a row – all finishes – against Gerald Meerschaert, Kevin Holland and Bo Nickal to immediately establish himself as a contender. For Whittaker, the matchup makes sense, and he knows what he's facing. "He's very good at taking the fight where you're uncomfortable," Whittaker said. "He's got a particular set of skills and a particular game plan that, if he executes well, he gives you a lot of problems. Bo found that out the hard way. I'm looking to be first and take the game where I'm strong. ... "I love being aggressive. I'm a striker by heart, so I want to try and get my mitts on him."
