President Trump says US brokered the India-Pakistan ceasefire, and used trade to achieve it

Riyadh/New Delhi, May 13 (UNI) US President Donald Trump today reiterated that his administration brokered a 'historic ceasefire' between India and Pakistan, and used trade to a large extent to achieve it.
Addressing a conference after talks with Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman in Riyadh, Trump also said that had his administration not stepped in then India and Pakistan would have been "trading nuclear missiles" instead.
'Just days ago my administration successfully, we brokered a historic ceasefire to stop the escalating violence between India and Pakistan; and I used trade to a large extent to do it,' to loud applause from the audience including the Saudi Crown Prince.
'I said 'fellows, come on, let's make a deal.
'Let's do some trading, let's not trade nuclear missiles, let's trade the things you make so beautifully.
And they both have very powerful leaders, very strong leaders, good leaders, smart leaders.
'And it all stopped, hopefully, it'll remain that way,' the US President said
'And it all stopped, I am proud of (US Secretary of State) Marco Rubio and all of the people that worked so hard,' he said, and also thanked VP JD Vance.
The US President also proposed that the leaders of India and Pakistan could be brought to share 'a nice dinner together'.
'Actually, getting along, maybe we can even get them together a little bit, Marco, with a nice dinner together, wouldn't that be nice?', he said to smiles around, including from the US Secretary of State.
'But we've come a long way. And millions of people could have died from that conflict, that started off small, and was getting big, and bigger and bigger by the day.'
India has said that trade was never discussed during the discussions with the US over lowering the tensions with Pakistan.

North Korea Has A Hidden Missile Base With ICBM Launchers Close To China: Report

North Korea's secret Sinpung-dong base near China may house nuclear-capable ICBMs, posing threats to East Asia and the US. North Korea has built a secret military base near its frontier with China that may house Pyongyang's newest long-range ballistic missiles, according to new research. The 'undeclared" Sinpung-dong missile operating base, located about 27km (17 miles) from the Chinese border in North Pyongan province, likely houses six to nine nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) and their launchers, the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said in its report. CSIS described the report as the first in-depth, open-source confirmation of the Sinpung-dong facility, calling it one of 15–20 ballistic missile bases and associated storage sites North Korea has never declared. The study warned that the weapons 'pose a potential nuclear threat to east Asia and the continental United States." The base has not been part of any previous US–North Korea denuclearisation negotiations, the thinktank said. Analysts added that in a crisis, missiles and launchers from the site could disperse and conduct mobile launches elsewhere in the country, making detection and interception more difficult. The findings come as Pyongyang accelerates its weapons programme following the collapse of Kim Jong-Un's 2019 summit with then–US president Donald Trump in Hanoi. Kim Jong-Un has since vowed a 'rapid expansion" of North Korea's nuclear arsenal and declared the country an 'irreversible" nuclear power. North Korea has also deepened its ties with Russia since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Western intelligence agencies say Pyongyang has sent more than 10,000 troops and significant quantities of artillery and missiles to Russia, while receiving technical assistance on advanced space and satellite technology in return. Analysts note that satellite launchers and ICBMs share many of the same technologies. The CSIS report concluded that the Sinpung-dong site, along with other undeclared bases, forms a core part of North Korea's evolving ballistic missile strategy and its expanding 'strategic-level nuclear deterrence and strike capabilities." view comments First Published: August 21, 2025, 15:46 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. CCHHL launches 51st property 'Valley Vista Resort' in Gangtok

Bengaluru, Aug 21 (UNI) Country Club Hospitality & Holidays Ltd (CCHHL), India's zero-debt hospitality pioneer, today made a landmark entry into Gangtok, Sikkim, with the inauguration of its flagship Valley Vista Resort. This milestone expands the company's portfolio to 51 premium properties across India and marks a strategic push into North and North-East India's growing tourism market. The launch coincides with India's 79th Independence Day celebrations and includes the unveiling of the exclusive VIP Gold Membership Card, offering members complimentary stays and lifetime privileges. Speaking to the media, CCHHL Chairman and Managing Director Y Rajeev Reddy highlighted the company's unique growth model, emphasising the role of its members in shaping the brand's journey. 'I personally feel today that members are our biggest brand ambassadors. If at all we have grown so big, it is only because members referred their own friends, family, and acquaintances. Thirty-five years is not a small period. This VIP Gold Membership is a special offer for our members to share the Country Club experience with their close ones.' Replying to a chain of questions asked by UNI, including the company's zero-debt strategy and scalability, Reddy explained that Indian banks fully support CCHHL, offering EMI facilities to members, which allows the company to expand sustainably without external funding. He differentiated CCHHL from competitors such as Lemon Tree and ITC, noting, 'They are good hoteliers, but our segment is different. We operate in 'clubbing'—holidays, events, health and fitness, and adventure sports. With one card, members access a range of services that go beyond traditional hotel stays.' Reddy also discussed the rationale behind entering Gangtok, stressing the untapped potential of domestic Himalayan tourism. 'Many Indians travel abroad but haven't explored Sikkim. Gangtok is more than a destination—it is a surreal experience. Rain, thunder, cloud bursts, lightning—this is God's own creation. The local government is pro-tourism, and direct flights from Bengaluru make the destination accessible.' Addressing concerns about premium pricing, Reddy reassured that local travelers can enjoy the facilities, noting the region's strong per capita income and the popularity of casinos and leisure activities among residents. Existing members can upgrade to the VIP Gold Membership, which is valid for life. CCHHL has plans to further expand in the North-East, Himalayas, and Western India, reflecting a pan-India vision. The company aims to combine luxury, adventure, and cultural immersion while promoting local employment and sustainable tourism, Reddy said. A senior corporate executive noted that the company's strategy ensures that local communities benefit from every project, from Pandavapura to Gangtok, he said. CCHHL's Gangtok launch, backed by a membership base of 2 million, reinforces its commitment to redefining India's travel experience. 'India has tremendous potential in tourism. Every citizen should contribute to promoting our country. Country Club is proud to be at the forefront of this movement,' said Reddy. The launch positions CCHHL as a major driver of domestic tourism, setting a benchmark for experiential, financially prudent, and culturally integrated hospitality in India. UNI BDN GNK

China stablecoin shift: Beijing mulls yuan-backed tokens to push global adoption; plans major policy reversal

China is considering allowing the usage of yuan-backed stablecoins for the first time in a move aimed at boosting the global adoption of its currency, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. If approved, the plan would mark a significant reversal of China's earlier hardline stance against digital assets. According to the sources, the State Council — China's cabinet — will review and possibly approve a roadmap later this month to expand the yuan's international role, including measures to compete with the US push on stablecoins. The plan is expected to set targets for wider usage of the Chinese currency in global markets, define the responsibilities of regulators, and establish guidelines for risk prevention. The country's top leadership is also expected to convene for a study session as early as the end of this month, focusing on yuan internationalisation and stablecoins. At the meeting, senior leaders are likely to outline remarks that will set the tone for stablecoin adoption and define the boundaries of its development in business, one source said. Stablecoins, a form of cryptocurrency pegged to fiat currencies like the dollar, are widely used to move funds between tokens and for cross-border transactions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo China banned cryptocurrency trading and mining in 2021, citing risks to financial stability, but officials now see yuan-backed stablecoins as a tool for promoting financial innovation and strengthening the yuan's global role. China has long aspired for the yuan to achieve global currency status on par with the dollar or euro, but tight capital controls and its large trade surpluses have held back progress. Market participants say those restrictions will remain a hurdle for the development of stablecoins as well. The yuan's share in global payments fell to 2.88% in June, its lowest in two years, according to SWIFT data, while the US dollar accounted for 47.19%. In contrast, US President Donald Trump has backed stablecoins since January and is establishing a regulatory framework to legitimise dollar-pegged cryptocurrencies. Sources told Reuters China's roadmap will assign implementation duties to regulators, including the People's Bank of China (PBOC). Hong Kong and Shanghai are expected to fast-track local rollouts, with Hong Kong's new stablecoin ordinance, effective August 1, already positioning the territory as one of the first jurisdictions to regulate fiat-backed issuers. Shanghai is also building an international operations hub for the digital yuan. China's next steps could be unveiled at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin from Aug. 31-Sep. 1, where Beijing may discuss expanding the use of yuan and stablecoins for cross-border trade and payments, said the sources. Globally, stablecoins backed by the dollar dominate the market, making up more than 99% of supply, according to the Bank for International Settlements. South Korea and Japan are also advancing plans for won- and yen-based stablecoins. The global stablecoin market is valued at $247 billion, but Standard Chartered Bank estimates it could reach $2 trillion by 2028.
