Springbok Women depart for World Cup 'excited but accountable', says coach De Bruin
'But now we must put all of that on the back burner. We must be proud, but focus on the job at hand, which is to score tries and win games.
'It is unreal the support we are getting,' the coach said. 'The farewell functions we had on Wednesday night were incredible. (SA Rugby President) Mark Alexander had everyone in tears with his speech. We realised what an emotional country we are rugby-wise; it is in our blood. We have been treated so well by our sponsors.
The Bok Women have had a busy week of farewells. And now it's showtime with their first game next Sunday against Brazil.
'I woke up at 3am this morning, going over moves and selection. You are always wondering if there was that little bit more you could have done because these girls are so coachable. They soak up information like a sponge.'
De Bruin, speaking after his team had had one last training session at Parktown Boys High in Johannesburg, said: 'It is like Christmas Eve for me and I'm wondering if Santa has left that shiny bicycle under the tree.
The Springbok Women's team departed for England and the World Cup on Thursday evening with excited coach Swys de Bruin describing himself as a kid before Christmas.
'We board the plane feeling we are accountable and must go and show what we can do."
We are very aware of the pool and where the opposition are ranked and their strengths and weaknesses, but it is my job to make sure we don't get ahead of ourselves.
The South Africans are in Pool D and play Brazil, Italy and France. They must win two of those matches to qualify for the quarter-finals.
'Italy are seventh on the world rankings, France fourth, we are 12th, and Brazil are well behind us,' De Bruin pointed out.
'We are taking a leaf out of Rassie Erasmus's book. At the last World Cup he said their first game, against Scotland, was everything.
'Likewise for us, Brazil is the most important game. If we slip up against them, it will be tough from then on. The whole mood would drop.
'Brazil have their Sevens players back and they are good at Sevens — they have five players in their backline from the Sevens.
'We are preparing for Brazil, and after that the focus will be on Italy. Of course, the coaching staff have been analysing all the teams in our pool up to the France game, but it is one step at a time.'
De Bruin has selected a squad comprising 20 players who participated in the last World Cup. At the World Cup before that, they had three players who had played in a World Cup, so the intellectual property is far higher this time.
'For sure, our experienced players will have an impact. The more caps you have, the better you deal with the pressure.
'Yes, we have had some easy games in the Africa Cup, but in this recent series with the Black Ferns, we showed what it means to play in a pressure game.
'Beating the Black Ferns was huge for us. It has given us confidence without arrogance. Because as soon as you think you have arrived in sport, you slip up hard.
'But we needed that win over a strong New Zealand team. We know we beat a strong side, and once the belief is there, it is exciting.'

Siya Kolisi fired up for No 8 challenge against Wallabies
Captain Siya Kolisi will be playing at eighthman for the Springboks for the first time, having done it at franchise level before. Springbok captain Siya Kolisi is fired up for the challenge of playing eighthman for the Boks for the first time in their Rugby Championship opener against the Wallabies at Ellis Park on Saturday evening (kick-off 5:10pm). Kolisi has played in the position before, most recently a number of times for the Sharks over the past franchise season, but this will be his first time donning the No 8 jersey in international rugby. At Friday's pre-match press conference the Bok captain said that his role wouldn't change drastically, and that he would be largely doing the same job he usually does when playing at flank. He also acknowledged the breakdown threat that the Aussies possess and said that the Boks' loose forward department will have their work cut out for them in the match. 'My role will change slightly in the lineouts and the scrums, but other than that I'll be fulfilling my usual role,' explained Kolisi. 'Playing No 8 at the Sharks certainly helped me, although the role here is different. I'm also not the same type of player as Jasper (Wiese) or Duane (Vermeulen) in terms of my size, so I'm going to give what I can offer. 'The breakdowns are going to be a big area of the game, so myself, Marco (van Staden) and Pieter-Steph (du Toit) have important jobs, although that said, the breakdowns are a team effort.' Confident Wallabies The Wallabies head into the game with plenty of confidence and momentum, off the back of beating the British and Irish Lions in their final game of the series a few weeks ago and will be eager to make a statement and upset the double World Cup winning champs on their home turf. But Kolisi sent a warning to their coming opposition over the rest of the season, explaining that the Boks were aiming to become a team that wins consistently between World Cups, and not just one that performs on the biggest stage. 'It is very important to us to do well between Cups. That is why you see so many players getting opportunities because, unfortunately, injuries occur. We need our greater group to be the best it can be,' said Kolisi. 'Our mindset is to win every single game but also to build squad depth because the two go hand in hand. To that end, our training sessions have been much tougher this year. I would say they have been brutal, especially the forward sessions. 'We want to be the best in the world all the time. It has never been our goal just to focus on World Cups, because anything can happen in a World Cup. Also, being No 1 in the world makes a difference when it comes to the World Cup pools.' Following the Boks and Aussies opening the Rugby Championship, Argentina will host the All Blacks in Cordoba (kick-off 11:10pm SA time).

Bethell to become England's youngest cricket captain against Ireland
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM - Jacob Bethell is set to become England's youngest international men's cricket captain after the 21-year-old was named Friday as skipper for next month's T20 international series in Ireland. The talented Warwickshire all-rounder is regarded as one of the rising stars of the English game, even though he has still to score his first professional century in any format. Bethell, however, has still been appointed to lead England in a three-match T20 series against Ireland in Dublin from September 17-21, which will serve as part of the team's preparations for next year's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. He is now in line to become England's youngest men's captain in an international match, breaking the record of Monty Bowden, who was 23 years and 144 days old when he led England in a Test against South Africa at Cape Town in 1888/89. Bethell has featured in just four Test matches but has become a white-ball regular with 13 Twenty20 appearances and 12 one-day internationals to his credit since making his T20 bow in September last year. 'LEADERSHIP QUALITIES' "Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," said England selector Luke Wright. Bethell's most recent international appearance was in the fifth and deciding Test against India at the Oval this month where, having replaced injured red-ball captain Ben Stokes, he managed scores of just six and five, while not taking a wicket with his left-arm spin. But former England captain Michael Vaughan said team management had made a "diabolical" decision to call-up Bethell for such a key match on the back of so little first-class cricket this season. Bethell has been given the chance to lead England after team chiefs decided regular white-ball captain Harry Brook should take a break following the ODI and T20 series against South Africa. The all-format quartet of Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse have also been rested from the Ireland series as they take a breather ahead of the upcoming shopwiece Ashes campaign. Fast bowlers Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson are not in any of the three squads as they prepare for the tour of Australia, with the first Test in Perth starting on November 21, but uncapped fast bowler Sonny Baker has been included. Wood had knee surgery in March and missed the whole of the Test series against India. Bafana held by Niger, now must beat Uganda to make it to Chan's last 8
Bafana Bafana will have to qualify for the quarterfinal of Africa Nations Championship the hard way after playing a 0-0 draw against Niger at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala, Uganda on Friday. This draw leaves Bafana in a precarious position as only a victory against hosts Uganda is guaranteed to take the South Africans to the quarterfinals. As things stands, Bafana are on five points while Uganda are on top of Group C on six with a +2 goal difference compared to Bafana's +1. Bafana are third in Group C with Algeria, who are facing already eliminated Niger on Monday, placed second with a better goal difference to Bafana. Algeria drew 1-1 against Guinea on Friday, earning point that ensured they remain ahead of Bafana going to the decisive final matches on Monday.
