Indian-origin Megha Vemuri trolled after 'hijacking' MIT event with pro-Palestine speech: 'Rude, disrespectful'
Megha Vemuri, an American student of Indian origin and President of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Class of 2025, is facing intense criticism on social media following a pro-Palestine speech delivered during her graduation ceremony.
The remarks, made as part of her official address, have sparked massive debate online, drawing both support and condemnation. Among those criticising Vemuri is Israeli entrepreneur Ouriel Ohayon, CEO of a cryptocurrency firm, who posted a strongly worded message on X (formerly Twitter) condemning her comments. Ohayon took issue with Vemuri's denunciation of MIT's associations with Israel and her call for solidarity with Palestine.
'Make that b*tch famous. May she never find any career path and be humiliated for what she just did and did before that. Ps: Megha, if you really want to sound cool, work on your 'rrrrrhaazzzza' accent,' Ohayon wrote. He further shared a link to Vemuri's LinkedIn profile, which has since been deactivated.
Political commentator Megyn Kelly also criticised Vemuri, accusing her of 'hijacking' the ceremony. She wrote, 'So this woman hijacks the MIT graduation to make the whole thing about her personal beliefs about Israel, any insult to the Jewish students or others in attendance be damned. Selfish, self-aggrandising, disrespectful & RUDE.'
Imtiaz Mahmood added: 'This is what Harvard, MIT, Oxford, UCLA, and others are producing—woke zombies. Here is MIT's class president, Megha Vemuri, a brainwashed Hindu girl, giving her graduation speech bashing Israel.'
A fourth user commented, 'You don't have to call her names. Trust me, her views are not reflections of Indians at large in the US or India. She is one of those woke types. We are equally pissed at her.'
'The Israeli occupation forces are the only foreign military that MIT has research ties with. This means that Israel's assault on the Palestinian people is not only aided and abetted by our country, but our school,' Vemuri said during her address.
According to a report by NBC News, MIT stated that the student's speech at the graduation ceremony differed from the version she had previously submitted to the university. As a result, she was barred from participating in the remainder of the event.
"While that individual had a scheduled role at today's Undergraduate Degree Ceremony, she was notified that she would not be permitted at today's events," said university spokesperson Kimberly Allen.
'MIT supports free expression but stands by its decision, which was in response to the individual deliberately and repeatedly misleading Commencement organisers and leading a protest from the stage, disrupting an important Institute ceremony,' Allen added.

India-EU free trade pact could be concluded before year end: Piyush Goyal
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday said that negotiations for the proposed comprehensive free trade agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union (EU) are progressing at a rapid pace and the deal could be concluded before the year end. He also said that India will raise its concerns over certain EU's regulations such as carbon tax and deforestation rules in the trade talks. "We have certain concerns about EU practices and regulations, likewise they have certain areas which they would like to discuss. All issues are on the table and we will negotiate a fair, balanced and equitable FTA," Goyal told reporters here. He added that all of these issues will come up for discussions, so that both sides can come up with a robust agreement that will support market access and promote easier trade. The minister is here for a two-day visit. He will meet French leaders and business representatives to promote trade and investments between the two countries. When asked about the expected timeline for conclusion of talks on the FTA, he said: "We never had a deadlines for a FTA, but looking at the rapid progress that we (India and the EU) are making, my sense is that we could do it faster than the year end". He said that there are not too many issues where both sides have divergence of opinions. "We have both complimentary economies. In most cases what is of offensive interest to India does not hurt the EU economy, likewise goods and services that Europe would like to provide to India only support our growth story," he said. However, the minister added that in any trading relationship, there are certain sensitive issues on both sides, "which is what we have to resolve amicably". Further, he said that India does not shy away from discussing issues pertaining to gender and sustainability in such trade pacts. "We will off course have a comprehensive FTA covering all subjects of mutual interest... Subject like gender, India bats on the front foot, and when it comes to subjects like sustainability, India is right at the fore front. India does not shy from any subject for discussions," Goyal said. Goyal will hold a bilateral meeting with EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Marcos Sefcovic on June 2 on the agreement. There are discussions for an early harvest or an interim trade agreement between the two sides that could include issues like intellectual property rights (IPRs), government procurement, tariffs, and non-tariff barriers. Besides demanding significant duty cuts in automobiles and medical devices, the EU wants tax reduction in products like wines, spirits, meat, poultry and a strong intellectual property regime. Indian goods exports to the EU, such as ready-made garments, pharmaceuticals, steel, petroleum products, and electrical machinery, can become more competitive if the pact is concluded successfully. In June 2022, India and the 27-nation EU bloc resumed negotiations for a comprehensive free trade agreement, an investment protection agreement and a pact on geographical indications (GIs) after a gap of over eight years. The negotiations stalled in 2013 due to differences over the level of opening up of the markets. On February 28, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the European Commission President agreed to seal a much-awaited free trade deal by the end of this year. The India-EU trade pact negotiations cover 23 policy areas or chapters, including Trade in Goods, Trade in Services, Investment, Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures, Technical Barriers to Trade, Trade Remedies, Rules of Origin, Customs and Trade Facilitation, Competition, Trade Defence, Government Procurement, Dispute Settlement, Intellectual Property Rights, Geographical Indications, and Sustainable Development. India's bilateral trade in goods with the EU was $137.41 billion in 2023-24 (exports worth $75.92 billion and imports worth $61.48 billion), making it the largest trading partner for goods. The EU market accounts for about 17 per cent of India's total exports, while the EU's exports to India make up 9 per cent of its total overseas shipments. In addition, the bilateral trade in services, in 2023, between India and the EU was estimated at $51.45 billion. Dispute settlement system Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday said that finalising and restoring a dispute resolution mechanism of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) quickly is important to maintain the core philosophy of the Geneva-based multi-lateral body. He said that a mini-ministerial meeting of the WTO will be held on June 3 where trade ministers of all the major economies would discuss ways to strengthen the multilateral trading systems, WTO reforms, and work towards open and expansive international trade. "It is very important that we finalise and restore a dispute resolution mechanism quickly so that the principles of the WTO can be adjudicated upon and justice can be delivered," he told reporters here. Total Energies investment Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Sunday held a meeting with Total Energies CEO Patrick Pouyanne and discussed the company's investment plans for India. Goyal is here for a three-day visit. "Met Mr. Patrick Pouyanne, Chairman & CEO of @TotalEnergies. Discussed the company's investment plans for India and avenues for deeper collaboration in the renewable energy sector," Goyal said in a post on X. Israel shares clip accusing gunmen of shooting at Gaza aid site, blames Hamas
Israel has accused Hamas of firing on hungry civilians gathered to receive humanitarian aid in Rafah, southern Gaza, strongly denying any Israeli involvement in the deadly incident that claimed at least 31 Palestinian lives and left dozens more injured. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) released drone footage purportedly showing Hamas gunmen firing at the crowds, asserting that the incident was a deliberate effort to sabotage humanitarian footage shows gunmen in Gaza shooting at civilians going to collect aid. Hamas is doing everything in its power to prevent the successful distribution of food in Gaza," the IDF said while sharing the footage shows gunmen in Gaza shooting at civilians going to collect is doing everything in its power to prevent the successful distribution of food in Gaza. Israel Defense Forces (@IDF) June 1, 2025This comes amid a flurry of conflicting reports. Gaza's health ministry claimed that the civilians were killed when Israeli forces opened fire near the aid distribution site, which is run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a US- and Israeli-backed private relief organisation. The ministry said more than 200 people were wounded, many with severe injuries, and that all those killed had been shot in the head or CNN, citing a paramedic from the Palestine Red Crescent Society - the only medical personnel present at the time-reported that Israeli forces fired on the crowd.A medical official quoted by the outlet said it was unclear who exactly opened fire but noted that the area fell under the responsibility of the Israeli military. "Whether they shoot or others who are working for them, it is still their responsibility," the official Red Cross, whose field hospital in Rafah was quickly overwhelmed, described the scale of casualties as unprecedented. "This is the highest number of weapon-wounded in a single incident since the establishment of the field hospital over a year ago," the organisation said in a statement. Israel has accused Hamas of being involved in the shooting at the aid distribution site. However, the IDF rejected allegations of wrongdoing, stating that no Israeli forces fired at civilians "near or within" the distribution site. It said these were "false reports" and urged media outlets to be cautious when reporting information disseminated by Israeli military source acknowledged that warning shots had been fired at suspects approaching a military position about a kilometre from the aid site-several hours before it opened-but said that incident was unrelated to the Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett also sought to counter the narrative by sharing video footage from the scene, which he said showed calm conditions at the time Israeli forces were alleged to have opened fire."Nothing. No shooting. Everything going well. 100% fake. The headline is simply a LIE," Bennett wrote on X (formerly Twitter), calling the accusations against Israel part of a slander Nir, spokesperson for the Israeli embassy in New Delhi, cited a GHF press release that firmly denied any shooting at the aid distribution site. "Our aid was again distributed today without incident. (Note: We are aware of rumours being actively fomented by Hamas suggesting deaths and injuries today. They are untrue and fabricated)," the release however, described the deaths as a "new massacre against hungry civilians", calling the aid centres "mass death traps, not humanitarian relief points".A local Palestinian journalist told the BBC that Israeli tanks had opened fire early in the morning when thousands had gathered at the centre. The Palestinian Red Crescent said its teams had recovered 23 bodies and treated an equal number of injured incident came just hours after Hamas responded to the latest US-backed ceasefire proposal. A senior Hamas official called the group's reply "positive and responsible", but the US envoy, Steve Witkoff, rejected it as "totally unacceptable".According to AFP, Hamas reiterated its demand for a permanent ceasefire and a complete Israeli withdrawal from Gaza-long-standing sticking points in latest warning to Hamas was unequivocal: accept the ceasefire deal and release hostages or face Reel

The Israeli military confirmed the interception of the missile before impact. This marks the 17th such launch by the Houthis in May, following U.S. airstrikes on Yemen. Ryanair has extended its flight suspension to Tel Aviv until July as Houthi long-range attacks intensify.
