CWG Live updates: Heat ramps up this week, while rain is more scarce
Welcome to cwg.live, updated around-the-clock by Capital Weather Gang meteorologists.
Happening now: We awaken to chilly upper 40s and 50s before sunshine boosts afternoon highs into the low to mid-70s.
What's next? Lots of sunshine and steady warming. Highs near 80 Tuesday, 85 Wednesday and near 90 by Thursday and Friday.
Today's daily digit — 9/10: Tough to beat the refreshing start and sunny 70s in the afternoon. But still, some lingering haze from wildfire smoke. | 🤚 Your call?
The digit is a somewhat subjective rating of the day's weather, on a 0-to-10 scale.
Forecast in detail
Today (Monday): It's another unseasonably chilly start — more like October than June with temperatures in the 40s and 50s. But sunshine boosts highs to 70 to 75 degrees this afternoon, with perhaps a thin veil of haze from wildfire smoke. Winds are light from the west. Confidence: Medium-High 😎 Nice Day!
Tonight: Skies are mostly clear, and it's crisp and cool. Lows slip to the mid- to upper 50s downtown with upper 40s and low 50s in our cooler areas. Confidence: Medium-High
Tomorrow (Tuesday): This is a great-looking early summer day. Sunshine lifts afternoon highs into the upper 70s and low 80s. Breezes are hardly noticeable. A lone wrinkle is the possibility of some haze from intruding wildfire smoke. Confidence: Medium-High 😎 Nice Day!
Tomorrow night: Mostly clear and a little less cool than previous nights. Lows settle in the 50s to near 60 downtown. Confidence: Medium-High
A look ahead
It feels unmistakably like summer Wednesday through Friday. The high temperature each day soars into the upper 80s to near 90, and humidity starts to become noticeable as well (dew points climb through the 60s). Overnight lows are mostly in the 60s except closer to 70 by early Friday. It's mostly dry with partly cloudy skies although we can't totally rule out a shower or storm late Thursday or Friday as humidity increases. Confidence: Medium-High
Warm weather hangs around for the weekend, with highs near 90 Saturday and 80 to 85 Sunday. Saturday offers a chance of showers and storms as a cool front comes through. Sunday has a better chance to stay dry and is probably less humid after morning lows in the 60s. Confidence: Medium

Readers critique The Post: Spelling bees are pointless. So is correct spelling.
Every week, The Post runs a collection of letters of readers' grievances — pointing out grammatical mistakes, missing coverage and inconsistencies. These letters tell us what we did wrong and, occasionally, offer praise. Here, we present this week's Free for All letters. As a proud English teacher for 60 years, I read Nicole Krauss's May 25 Opinion essay, 'The end of writing and reading will be the end of freedom,' with enthusiasm — and with horror at the knowledge that so many young people have no concept of the joy of reading. It put into words all the fears I have had over the years about the written word becoming obsolete. It also brought me back to a sense of optimism that some of our youths still cherish reading. I hope I have nurtured all my students to read and appreciate the written word.
