Proposal in the State Capitol would legalize online gambling
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinoisans can bet on sports using apps on their phones in recent years, and one proposal in the State Capitol could also allow casino games.
Bills sponsored by Rep. Edgar Gonzales (D-Chicago) and Sen. Cristina Castro (D-Chicago) would legalize the use of online gaming websites, or iGaming. This would allow adults in the state to gamble with poker, slot machines and similar games on the Internet under regulation.
Illinois earns $1.7 billion in revenue from gambling in 2024
The bill would require platforms to 'reasonably' verify that users are 21 years old or older and that they are in Illinois when playing games.
Advocates for the bill like the lobbying group Sports Betting Alliance argue allowing gambling websites could bring hundreds of millions of dollars for the state.
'iGaming is already happening in Illinois, operating under legal loopholes and making massive profits while robbing the state of hundreds of millions in potential annual tax revenue,' part of Sports Betting Alliance's website reads. 'Legalizing iGaming in Illinois regulates the industry, protects players, and unlocks new tax revenue.'
The proposal is receiving pushback. Many business owners argue by legalizing gambling online, it will cut into their revenue from gaming machines in their establishments.
The bill has been assigned to the House Gaming Committee. Similar legislation was proposed in past General Assemblies.
According to Sports Betting Alliance, seven states have legalized internet gambling, including Michigan, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

J.D. Vance Thought It Would Be Funny To Joke About Deporting A Menswear Writer Who Made Fun Of His Outfits
JD Vance suggested on social media Monday that he is OK with the idea of deporting a menswear expert who has skewered the vice president's fashion sense. Derek Guy writes about men's fashion for various outlets and has a popular account on X where he often criticizes the fashion choices of public figures, including right-wing politicians. In March, Guy suggested that the vice president's pants are too slim, which causes them to ride up his legs when he sits. @dieworkwear / Via Although Guy keeps much of his identity private, he wrote a deeply personal X post on Sunday about his family fleeing the Vietnam War, calling the Trump administration's immigration policy 'inhumane.' He also shared that his mother brought him from Canada to the U.S. as a baby without legal documentation so they could reunite with his father. Part of his X post mentioned the following: I'm still unsure whether we technically broke an immigration law. The border between Canada and the United States was pretty porous (as it is today, for the most part). But either way, since I came here without legal documentation, I eventually fell into the category of being an undocumented immigrant. Yet, I've been in the United States since I was a baby. My identity and roots are very much based in this country, no different from anyone else. Guy's post pointed out that the vast majority of immigrants ― undocumented or not ― are not 'MS-13 members' but 'are all like your neighbors.' Twitter: @dieworkwear Related: 50 People Who Really, Really, Really, Really, Really, Really, Really, Really, Really, Really, Really, Really Gave No EFFS X user @growing_daniel saw the opportunity for Vance to get revenge on Guy for teasing the vice president's socks and pants, and seemed to suggest he should deport the menswear expert. 'JD Vance I know you're reading this and you have the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever,' he tweeted. @growing_daniel / Via The vice president responded a short time later with a meme of Jack Nicholson from the 2003 film Anger Management, nodding vigorously in agreement. @JDVance / Via Related: "Something's Killed Me. Guy then responded to the vice president with some hilarious snark. 'i think i can outrun you in these clothes,' he wrote, posting photographic evidence of Vance's constricting pants and shirts. @dieworkwear / Via As of Monday afternoon, Vance hadn't responded to Guy's article originally appeared on HuffPost. Ready to leave Spectrum? This loophole can help, even if you have a device payment plan
Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR If you're ready to leave Spectrum Mobile but already have a payment plan for a new device there's a way to get out of the deal early. Spectrum's Anytime Upgrade feature lets you swap out your phone — even if you're on a payment plan and even if you have only had the new device for a few months or less. Some users are taking advantage of a loophole to trade in expensive phones for a cheap model and pay it off upfront, but this workaround may not last long. Last year, Spectrum Mobile tried to attract more subscribers with a special promotion that offered a full year of free service for customers who also used Spectrum for home internet. This promotion is still available and can be a great way to try the service, though Spectrum Mobile certainly isn't for everyone. If you're not impressed with Spectrum's phone service, you don't necessarily have to stick around for the whole year if you brought your own device. But what if you bought a phone on a payment plan and still have many payments left? Surprisingly, there's a way out without having to pay off the entire phone: Enter Spectrum's Anytime Upgrade feature. For those unfamiliar, all Unlimited Plus plans include Anytime Upgrade. This feature lets you try out a phone and then return it for another if it's not the right fit. Most of the time this feature is used to actually lock you in longer, but it doesn't have to be that way. Unlike similar programs from other carriers, you don't need to pay off a set percentage of the phone's value first, and there aren't strict upgrade requirements. As noted over the weekend by Redditor bonchooski, the end result is that there's a bit of a loophole here that could help you leave Spectrum behind. Let's say you were previously packing a Galaxy S25 and still have nearly two years of payments ahead of you. With the Anytime Upgrade, you could simply turn it in and swap it for another. Obviously, the longer you keep the device, the less of a good idea this is but if you are only a few months into a payment plan and are ready to leave Spectrum, you could simply turn in your device for for Spectrum's cheapest device, the $79.99 TCL Flip 3 and pay it off upfront. In most cases this will be much cheaper than paying off your existing plan, though you'll have to get a new smartphone at your new phone carrier of choice. Several other Redditors confirmed this strategy works, but cautioned that the more people use the loophole, the more likely Spectrum is to close it. So if you're thinking about leaving Spectrum and don't want to pay off your current device, you might want to act quickly. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ .
