Rajasthan recorded 384.7 mm of rain against the normal 200.4 mm, a surplus of 92 %.
Similarly, Ladakh, which normally gets little rain, saw 30 mm against 10.7 mm, 181 % above normal.
Live Events
Nagaland and Manipur received 514.5 mm and 457.9 mm, close to normal, while Sikkim recorded 598.4 mm, 78 % higher than usual.
States and Union territories that received "excess" rainfall (20 to 59 % more than normal) include Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Jharkhand and Assam.
Madhya Pradesh recorded 645.8 mm against 418.4 mm, 54 % above normal.
Gujarat received 463.2 mm, 35 % more, while the UT of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu saw 1466.1 mm compared to 1153.8 mm, an increase of 27 %.
Most states, including Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Goa, Tripura, Mizoram, West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir, Chhattisgarh, Puducherry and Andaman and Nicobar Islands, have received "normal" rainfall, with figures within 19 % of the average.
Deficient rainfall
(20 to 59 % less than normal) has been reported in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Delhi, Maharashtra, and Lakshadweep.
Arunachal Pradesh recorded 521.8 mm against 942.2 mm, a 45 % shortfall, while Bihar received 272 mm, 43 % less than the normal 474.2 mm.
In May, the IMD had forecast that India is likely to receive 106 % of the long-period average rainfall of 87 cm during the
June-September monsoon
season. Rainfall between 96 and 104 % of this 50-year average is considered 'normal'.
Above-normal rainfall is expected in most parts of the country, except Ladakh, adjoining areas of Himachal Pradesh, the Northeast and some parts of Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.
Some isolated areas in Punjab, Haryana, Kerala and Tamil Nadu may record below-normal rainfall, the IMD had said.
The monsoon is crucial for India's
agriculture sector
, which supports the livelihood of around 42 % of the population and contributes 18.2 % to the GDP.
It also plays a key role in replenishing reservoirs essential for drinking water and power generation.

Some worry, others breathe a sigh of relief: How countries are responding to new US tariffs imposed by Trump administration

US President Donald Trump announced a fresh wave of tariffs on exports from dozens of trading partners. Trump's latest tariff move sent global stock markets tumbling and prompted countries and companies to scramble to find ways to strike better deals with Washington. The new tariffs announced by the Trump administration included Switzerland's 39 percent tariff, which saw the highest tariff rates since the early 1930s. It sought more talks, as did India, hit with a 25% rate. New tariffs also include a 35% duty on many goods from Canada, 50% for Brazil, and 20% for Taiwan, which said its rate was "temporary" and expected to reach a lower figure. These tariffs are set to take effect next week and impact almost every country. While most nations are facing increased tariffs, a few are breathing a sigh of relief after securing last-minute deals. Trump's new tariff rates: Here's how some countries reacted Live Events New Zealand's Trade Minister Tom McClay called the increased tariffs unjustified after the country's exports to the US were hit with a 15% base rate, up from 10%, according to CNN. In Switzerland, the government expressed "great regret" over the US decision to impose 39% tariffs on Swiss imports, despite progress in bilateral talks and Switzerland's "very constructive stance." Australian Trade Minister Don Farrell praised the 10% tariff rate—the lowest announced by the White House—calling it a 'vindication' of how the government handled diplomacy with the US. Bangladesh called the outcome of its trade talks with the US a 'decisive diplomatic victory' after Trump announced a 20% tariff on Bangladeshi goods. The rate announced in April 2025 was 37 percent. Malaysia, which was at risk of a 24% tariff on its exports, was able to negotiate it down to 19%—a result its trade ministry described as a 'significant achievement.' Cambodia, after reaching a deal with the US, will now face a 19% tariff instead of the originally announced 49%. South Africa, facing the highest tariff rate at 30%, said discussions with the US will continue. President Cyril Ramaphosa stated that negotiations are the best path forward. Wall Street sell-off sparked by tariff onslaught Wall Street's main indexes led a global selloff on Friday as new U.S. tariffs on dozens of trading partners weighed on sentiment, while a weaker-than-expected payrolls report added to risk aversion. Just hours before the tariff deadline on Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing duties on U.S. imports from countries including Canada, Brazil, India, and Taiwan, even as countries scrambled to seek ways to strike better deals. Data showed U.S. job growth slowed more than expected in July 2025, while the prior month's report was revised sharply lower, pointing to a sharp moderation in the labor market. U.S. stocks took an immediate hit. By early afternoon on Friday (August 1, 2025), the Dow Jones Industrial Average had dropped 0.96% to 43,708.00, the S&P 500 1.21% to 6,262.88, and the Nasdaq Composite 1.65% to 20,773.64. Markets were also reacting to a disappointing jobs report. Data showed U.S. job growth slowed more than expected in July, while the prior month's data was revised sharply lower, pointing to a slowdown in the labor market. Global shares stumbled, with Europe's STOXX 600 down 1.89% on the day and 2.5% on the week, on track for its biggest weekly drop since Trump announced his first major wave of tariffs on April 2. Trump's new tariffs have created yet more uncertainty, with many details unclear. They are set to take effect on Aug 7 at 0401 GMT, a White House official said. The European Union, which struck a framework deal with Trump, is still awaiting further Trump orders to deliver on agreed-upon carve-outs, including those for cars and aircraft, EU officials said, noting that the latest executive orders did not cover these areas.

The power ministry recently launched the VGF scheme for BESS of up to 30 GWh capacity with support from the Power System Development Fund (PSDF). This is in addition to the 13.2 GWh already in place. Live Events With the new VGF scheme window open for a year, states are trying to make the most of it, according to industry experts. "Battery storage capacities have been increasing not just in the number of projects being set up, but also in the size of projects," said Debmalya Sen, president, India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA). Recent bids from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra have shown 2 GWh and 4GWh capacities being shared under the new VGF scheme, Sen added. Almost a third of the 30 GWh capacity in the scheme has been tendered out. The tariff discoveries have been supporting the aim to set up higher capacity-projects with 4-hour one-cycle gaining traction and rates falling to ₹3.59 lakh/MW/month from 4.41 lakh/MW/month in six months.

Trump-Modi talks key to trade deal: Former Asst USTR

New Delhi: India-US talks on forging a bilateral trade deal may require a reset through a conversation at the highest level, said Mark Linscott, senior advisor, US-India Strategic Partnership Forum and a former Assistant US Trade Representative. He said there is a strong desire on the US side to make progress and conclude a short-term agreement, followed by a longer-term bilateral trade deal. Linscott, however, said this may require a cooling-off period once new tariffs are in place, followed by a phone call between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi. "I'm a strong believer in never saying never, particularly when it involves the United States and India. We've seen over and over again how Trump can reverse course on a dime," he pointed out. Live Events "However, the next few days and weeks will be key in moving on, and I don't even rule out a trade deal along the lines of those with Japan, the EU and Korea during this period," he said. Trump had on Thursday said India's tariffs are among the highest in the world and slammed its ties with Russia calling both their economies dead, hours after announcing a 25% tariff on imports from New Delhi plus a penalty for trade with Moscow. A US trade team is scheduled to visit New Delhi on August 25 to continue talks on the proposed trade deal. The two sides are engaged in talks for a bilateral trade agreement (BTA), the first tranche of which is to be concluded by October with the aim to more than double the bilateral trade in goods and services to $500 billion by 2030 from the current $191 billion. Linscott termed the latest development only a "hiccup" in US-India trade negotiations. "...it requires a steady hand on the Indian side to signal that it is committed to continuing negotiations," he said. "But Trump remains a deal maker, and I believe there is a strong desire on the US side to make progress and conclude a short-term agreement and a longer-term bilateral trade agreement, " he added.
