
UNESCO, SACIT, Siam Piwat Spotlight Thai Craftsmanship
This extraordinary campaign celebrates Thai artisans and elevates local wisdom from the seven Creative Cities — epicentres of cultural heritage and Thai craftsmanship — into contemporary works of art, with the SIRIVANNAVARI brand and 14 of Thailand's top designers. The three parties recently signed a Letter of Intent to support craftsmanship and the creative economy, empowering local communities and the next generation of Thai designers.
A key highlight of the event was the unveiling of two silk clutch bags designed by Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, Creative Director of the SIRIVANNAVARI brand. Under her vision, each bag features intricate embroidery crafted by skilled artisans from the SIRIVANNAVARI Atelier & Academy.
The first clutch is a dazzling creation featuring a radiant golden peacock — the emblem of the SIRIVANNAVARI brand — with its fanned tail adorned with ears of rice, symbolising prosperity and abundance, and shimmering with beads and crystals. The second clutch draws inspiration from traditional woven textiles, with embroidery echoing the fabric's intricate patterns, enhancing their dimension and elegance.
Both pieces are one-of-a-kind works of art — true masterpieces that embody exclusivity and refined craftsmanship. Crafted from Kaew Ching Duang silk — a textile symbolising prosperity, unity, and harmony — the bags were handwoven by nationally honoured master artisan Weeratham Taragoonngernthai, grand master of Thai silk and founder of the 'CHANSOMA' brand in Surin Province. Each piece was specially designed to honour the spirit of Thai artisans and reflect the magnificence of Thai craftsmanship through a contemporary lens.
The royally designed silk clutches were auctioned to raise funds for a youth-focused UNESCO programme that promotes education and creative development for young people in Thailand's seven Creative Cities: Phuket, Chiang Mai, Bangkok, Sukhothai, Phetchaburi, Chiang Rai, and Suphanburi.
Another highlight of the event is an exhibition featuring eight traditional Thai ensembles from the royal wardrobe of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya. On loan from the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles, this marks their debut public showcase in Thailand. Designed and tailored by Tirapan Wannarat, owner of the TIRAPAN couture house and Thailand's 2019 National Artist in Visual Arts (Fashion Design), the pieces — including Thai Ruen Ton, Thai Chitralada, and Thai Amarin styles — are worn for royal ceremonies and official occasions and are imbued with historical significance.

This partnership led to the creation of the 'UNESCO x SACIT x ICONCRAFT: A Celebration of Thai Artisans and Creative Cities' campaign, which connects the local wisdom and Thai handicrafts of the seven Creative Cities with 14 designers.
SACIT has long been a key partner of Siam Piwat and recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to jointly support and enhance the capacities of Thai master artisans, craftsmen, their successors, producers, and designers, as part of a strategic initiative to elevate Thai craftsmanship and expand its recognition on the international stage.
To create this exclusive collection, seven leading Thai designers were invited by ICONCRAFT to collaborate with seven designers from the Thai arts and crafts sector selected by SACIT. The designer pairings are as follows:

High costs, low awareness hinder sustainable rice sales
High investment costs, uncertain market positioning and the absence of a clear government policy are preventing Thai rice farmers from fully embracing sustainable practices, according to the Rice Exporters' Association. The association said that without firm state support for brand development and improving farming standards, Thailand's sustainable rice industry is losing ground to competitors. "Strong political commitment -- demonstrated through leadership, funding, and effective policies -- is needed to improve yields and expand market access for sustainable rice," said Vallop Manathanya, the association's vice president, during a recent workshop on the national roadmap for the Integrated Sustainable Rice Landscapes (ISRL) project. The project aims to improve policy frameworks, farmer training, and financing mechanisms, while preserving natural landscapes, ecosystems, and biodiversity. Hundreds of farmers in Chiang Rai and Ubon Ratchathani provinces are participating in the project, with 50,000 tonnes of sustainable rice already exported. However, Mr Vallop noted that the product still lacks a strong brand identity and clear market positioning. "It's hard to sell sustainable rice when it's priced higher than other varieties in such a competitive market," said Thanawat Lowharuangrongkul of the Thai Rice Millers' Association. He noted past efforts to encourage farmers to plant fragrant pandan jasmine rice, saying that despite the rice's premium label due to its geographical indication status, farmers had issues selling it in the market, as the higher prices restricted sales. Mr Thanawat added that millers remain unsure whether farmers can bear the cost of obtaining Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) certification. To help, the association, which represents 3,000 registered millers, is prepared to facilitate business matching to connect producers with buyers, he said. "If farmers can make a profit and sustain their practices, the whole supply chain benefits," he said. Chitnucha Buddhaboon, deputy director-general of the Rice Department, acknowledged the challenges and stressed the need for a systematic shift from traditional farming. The department is finalising a national roadmap to lower production costs, cut hazardous chemical use, and adopt climate-smart technologies -- with the aim of increasing yields while reducing greenhouse gas emissions in line with national and global climate goals.

Neda halts all new projects in Cambodia
Following the deadly Thailand-Cambodia border skirmishes, the Neighbouring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (Neda), a public organisation under the Finance Ministry, has halted all new aid investment projects in Cambodia. According to a source from Neda who requested anonymity, no ongoing financial aid projects in Cambodia are currently under construction. One new project that has investment plans will be postponed following the clashes, the source said. This latest investment project offered assistance to the Cambodian government to construct Road R67, and was in the contractor selection process prior to the postponement. This route connects Si Sa Ket province in Thailand with Siem Reap in Cambodia. Although the project has already been approved, Neda paused funding until the situation improves. Road R67 is considered a key route in Cambodia, with the project upgrading the road surface to asphalt concrete and reinforced concrete over a distance of 134 kilometres, from Siem Reap to Anlong Veng and Choam/Sa Ngam in Cambodia. The total project value is 983 million baht. Neda offered a low interest rate of 1.5% to the Cambodian government and a repayment period of 25 years, including a seven-year grace period. The construction period was set at 24 months. The loan conditions require the use of Thai contractors and at least 50% of the contract value must be spent on Thai goods and services. As for other new financial aid projects for Cambodia -- such as the Road R68 project that would connect Surin province with Siem Reap -- a feasibility study was completed. However, Neda will not approve the project at this time, the source said. "All new projects are on hold. Nothing will be added, except for existing contracts we are following through on," said a senior-ranking source at Neda, adding that given the sentiment, even if projects were approved no Thai contractor would dare enter Cambodia to carry them out. The source said over the past two years Neda has focused financial aid efforts in Cambodia on 3-4 projects, as Laos faces high levels of public debt, leaving it unprepared for further investment. Meanwhile, Myanmar continues to struggle with internal conflict. For projects to proceed in Myanmar, Neda must wait for an election recognised by Asean, said the source. The country may hold an election this year or next. The source said the previous conflict between Thailand and Cambodia in 2011 over the Preah Vihear Temple caused Neda to suspend aid to Cambodia for 5-6 years. Neda has provided low-interest loans totalling 2.92 billion baht to Cambodia, accounting for 12% of Neda's total aid to neighbouring countries.

KSS predicts SET may rally on rate cut
The Thai stock market is poised for an August rally on expectations the Bank of Thailand's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) will trim the policy rate at tomorrow's meeting, says Krungsri Securities (KSS). According to KSS estimates, every rate cut of 25 basis points (bps) could lift the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index by 50-55 points. This outlook follows recent Commerce Ministry data on inflation showing the headline consumer price index (CPI) in July contracted 0.7% year-on-year, sharply below market expectations and deeper than June's decline of 0.25%. Core CPI, which excludes volatile energy and fresh food prices, rose just 0.84% from a year earlier, decelerating from a 1.06% annualised surge in June and falling below the central bank's target range of 1-3%. "The negative inflation figures pressure the MPC to act," KSS said in a research note. "The weak headline and core inflation figures clearly signal severely subdued domestic demand, which may compel the MPC to reduce the policy rate at its next meeting." The equity market is expected to respond positively to a rate cut. The brokerage predicts a 25bps reduction could result in a rise of 50-55 points on the SET index, with several sectors benefiting directly from lower borrowing costs. According to KSS, one beneficiary would be the power sector, with lower financing costs easing the loan interest burden, especially for high-dividend utilities such as Gulf Energy Development (GULF), making them more attractive in a low-rate environment. Hire-purchase and consumer finance businesses also stand to gain from reduced funding costs, which would widen net interest margins and lift earnings. KSS identified Muangthai Capital (MTC) and Krungthai Card (KTC) as top picks. High-dividend telecom stocks could attract yield-seeking investors amid falling interest rates, with Advanced Info Service (ADVANC) recommended, said the brokerage. Lower rates could ease mortgage burdens for homebuyers and enhance the attractiveness of real estate investment trusts (REITs) and infrastructure funds due to wider yield spreads over government bonds. KSS recommends AP Thailand (AP), Frasers Property Thailand Industrial Freehold & Leasehold REIT (FTREIT), WHA Premium Growth Freehold and Leasehold REIT (WHART), WHA Industrial Leasehold REIT (WHAIR), and 3BB Internet Infrastructure Fund (3BBIF). The brokerage said another beneficiary would be highly leveraged firms, which could gain significantly from refinancing opportunities and lower interest expenses, with CP ALL a recommendation.
