"Rs 700 For Commute?": Employees Slam Bengaluru Bike Taxi Ban, Express Anger
Days after the Karnataka High Court upheld the state government's ban on bike taxi services, the citizens continue to protest against the decision. The ban officially kicked into effect from June 16, leaving thousands of daily commuters without an affordable alternative to beat the gruesome Bengaluru traffic.
On social media, the backlash against the decision is palpable, with users venting their anger while others sharing how they were being forced to cough up money beyond their means.
"At Rs 700/day for 2 way commute by Auto, that's almost India's per capita income.. Wasn't the zero commission model supposed to reduce prices? How did we end up with surged prices?" wrote one user.

"Bengaluru traffic worsens after bike taxi ban, auto fares are rising since they don't have a competitor now, charging whatever pops onto their minds," added another.
Bengaluru traffic worsens after bike taxi ban , auto fares are rising since they don't have a competitor now, charging whatever pops onto their minds, govt should act by seeing consequences rather than making their voters happy!! #BikeTaxiBan #Bengaluru #rapidoban #Rapido #bike

A third commented: "Not even 8am, and #Bengaluru is choked already. Thanks to the #biketaxi ban, had to take an auto. Give me walkable shortest paths to the bus stops, and bike lanes, please. This is no way to create cities."

Cheeky workaround?
In the aftermath of the ban, some social media users spotted Rapido replacing the banned 'bike taxi' service with a 'bike parcel' service. By booking themselves as a 'parcel' for intra-city couriers, the commuters could traverse the Bengaluru traffic to reach their destination.
"The bike taxi ban starts today in Karnataka...but the Product Owner at Rapido Bike app has already bypassed the law... can't book a ride? No worries - just parcel yourself to work... Call it: 'PaaS - Passenger as a Service'," an X user called Dhanvi said, with a screenshot of a 'bike parcel' booking.

Notably, the Karnataka HC division bench in its judgment said it would have considered granting a stay on the order if the state had indicated progress in drafting the rules. However, the government stated that it had taken a policy decision not to frame such regulations, leading the court to deny relief to the aggregators.
The bench issued notices to the state government and other respondents, setting the next hearing for June 24.

Lawyer sues sub-registrar's office over faulty encumbrance certificate, wins Rs 10,000 compensation
Bengaluru: A simple request for an encumbrance certificate (EC) turned into a legal victory for advocate Praveen Kumar K — besides exposing a case of bureaucratic negligence — after the sub-registrar's office in Peenya issued a faulty document. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It all began when 34-year-old Praveen, from Vijayanagar, applied online for an EC relating to a property in Kurubarahalli, JC Nagar, on Dec 3, 2023. He sought details of all transactions between Oct 1, 2010, and Dec 3, 2023, and paid Rs 170 via UPI for the certificate, which was issued on Dec 7, 2023. To Kumar's surprise, the EC returned "no transactions found," which was a glaring error. The property in question had been purchased through a registered sale deed dated Oct 11, 2010. The document was properly recorded but was omitted from the EC, making the certificate not just inaccurate but professionally damaging. Kumar issued a legal opinion based on the faulty EC, and the omission risked affecting his credibility and legal standing. Kumar immediately approached the sub-registrar's office requesting rectification. When he received no response, he sent a legal notice on Jan 24, 2024. A second notice was issued on March 14, 2024, which he also escalated to multiple officials, including the revenue minister and commissioner of stamps. Finally, he sent a statutory notice under Section 80 of the Civil Procedure Code (CPC) on July 20, 2024. Despite repeated attempts to seek redressal, Kumar received no reply or corrective action from the sub-registrar. Fed up, he filed a consumer complaint before the Bengaluru Urban II additional district consumer disputes redressal commission on March 21, 2024, for deficiency in service. The sub-registrar's office didn't appear for the hearing and failed to file any response, leading to an ex-parte proceeding. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Kumar submitted 12 documents in support of his case, including the EC, sale deed, legal notices, postal acknowledgements, and the CPC notice. After going through all the documents, the commission observed that the sub-registrar's silence throughout the process was an implicit admission of guilt. The commission also observed that EC is a crucial document used to verify the ownership status and financial encumbrances (like loans, mortgages, or pending litigation) on a property. A defective EC can mislead stakeholders and prejudice their rights. It may result in litigation, delays in transactions, and even losses to parties who rely on the certificate's accuracy for legal or financial decisions. Referring to a 2007 national commission ruling, the consumer forum observed: "Issuance of such wrong EC may mislead the authorities concerned and may create unnecessary litigation in respect of the subject property. Hence, such negligence can't be considered as trivial." On April 28, 2025, the consumer commission ordered the sub-registrar's office to refund the fee paid by the petitioner for obtaining the EC, aside from paying him Rs 10,000 for mental distress, loss of professional reputation, and to cover litigation costs.

UT administration receives bids for construction of verandah outside courtroom
Chandigarh: The UT engineering department has received around five bids for the project to construct a verandah outside court room number 1 of Punjab and Haryana High Court. Scrutiny of bids will start on Monday, after which technically qualified ones will be selected and the process of financial bidding will start. The authority has specified the area for construction of the verandah, keeping heritage and other aspects in mind. The UT urban planning department has prepared and issued the drawing/design of the civil work, estimated at around Rs 13.50 lakh, to the engineering department for construction of the verandah. It has been categorically asked to construct the new verandah outside court room number 1. It will be similar to verandahs from court room numbers 2 to 9 in the high court. Since this project entails crucial heritage aspects, engineering officials concerned will monitor the work. "All dimensions are given approximately and must be verified on-site before execution of the work. The proposed verandah will be constructed as per the existing verandah in front of court numbers 2 to 9 in terms of design, specification, and structural feasibility. All electrical services shall follow the same pattern as in front of the existing court numbers 2 to 9," the engineering department has been instructed. Sources in the Chandigarh administration said that 22 iron poles will be installed and covered with RCC battens to construct the new verandah outside court room number 1. Thus, no major construction work in the existing building will be required. The matter was already discussed in the heritage committee of the UT administration. In May, the Supreme Court upheld a high court order directing the Chandigarh administration to construct a verandah (covered walkway) outside the Chief Justice's court. The Supreme Court's decision came after the Chandigarh administration appealed the high court order, raising concerns about potential violations of Unesco guidelines. Case sent to ASI Both the Chandigarh Heritage Committee (CHC) and its sub-group have approved the project. The Chandigarh administration has also sent the matter to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for consideration and approval by the World Heritage Committee. "The ASI is the nodal agency to communicate and deliberate with the World Heritage Committee for such matters, as the Chandigarh administration cannot directly approach the World Heritage Committee," sources in the UT said. Imp Box: Tenders floated The UT engineering department has initiated two separate works for the verandah project of the high court. Tender amount for the civil work is estimated at around Rs 13.50 lakh, for which bids have been received. A tender for separate electrical work has also been initiated, with bids requested till June 27. Tender amount for electrical work is around Rs 1.88 lakh. Design & heritage considerations: --The verandah will mirror the design of those outside Courtrooms 2 to 9. --The UT urban planning department has provided the design, estimated at ₹13.50 lakh. --The project is sensitive due to heritage aspects, and will be closely monitored. Construction Details: --22 iron poles will be installed and covered with RCC battens. --No major alterations to the existing building are required. --Electrical work will follow the existing pattern and is separately tendered at ₹1.88 lakh (bids open till June 27). Legal and heritage approvals: --The Supreme Court upheld a High Court order mandating the verandah's construction. --The Chandigarh Heritage Committee and its sub-group have approved the project. --The matter has been referred to the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) for further approval by the World Heritage Committee.
