CCPA probes Ola, Rapido, other ride-hailing apps on advance tipping
Consumer protection watchdog CCPA is investigating ride-hailing platforms like Ola Cabs and Rapido to ascertain if they are indulging in the unfair trade practice of ' advance tipping '. On Wednesday, the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) issued a notice to Uber for allegedly "forcing or nudging" users to pay advance tips for faster service. "CCPA is investigating other apps like @Olacabs and @rapidobikeapp, they will also be served notice if they are found indulging in such practices," Union Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said in a post on X on Thursday. Joshi, on Wednesday, said the practice of 'Advance Tip' was deeply concerning. "Forcing or nudging users to pay a tip in advance for faster service is unethical and exploitative. Such actions fall under unfair trade practices," the minister had said, adding that tipping is meant as a token of appreciation, given after service completion, not as an entitlement beforehand.

CCPA to investigate Ola and Rapido over alleged unfair practices, says Union Minister Pralhad Joshi
By News Desk Published on May 22, 2025, 18:11 IST Last updated May 22, 2025, 18:11 IST Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Tuesday said that the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) is now investigating other ride-hailing apps such as Ola and Rapido for allegedly indulging in unfair trade practices. The statement came in response to a user complaint that companies other than Uber were also involved in overcharging customers. 'CCPA is investigating other apps like @Olacabs and @rapidobikeapp, they will also be served notice if they are found indulging in such practices,' Joshi wrote on X (formerly Twitter). The post was in reply to a user, Yasir Mushtaq, who thanked the minister for acting on Uber but pointed out that 'this is not limited to Uber only, Rapido and Ola are doing the same.' Mushtaq shared screenshots and urged the minister to look into the matter further. If Ola and Rapido are found violating consumer rights, they too could face similar regulatory scrutiny. The move reflects growing government focus on consumer rights and transparency in app-based services, especially in the mobility sector. News desk at
