AFRIMA partners with BridgeAfric for Lagos global music workshop
Lagos is set to become the epicentre of music business and creativity as the All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) partners with BridgeAfric and UNESCO to host the Showbiz101 Global Workshop and Music Creation Camp. The event, scheduled from March 26 to 29, 2025, aims to train young creatives, foster international collaborations and strengthen the music production and business ecosystem.
Adenrele Niyi, Chief Experience Officer, (CXO), AFRIMA, said the partnership with bridgeAfric on the event underlined the AFRIMA institution's commitment to empowering Africa's creative industry.
'As AFRIMA, part of our mission is building capacity and fostering cross-border collaborations by empowering Africa's creative industry and by providing platforms for artists to collaborate, grow, and break boundaries. Partnering with bridgeAfric for the Showbiz101 Global Workshop & Music Creation Camp is a no-brainer. This initiative is about more than just music; it's about equipping young creatives with the tools, knowledge, and global connections they need to thrive in the industry,' Niyi said.
The AFRIMA CXO added that the event aligns with AFRIMA's seven pillars, which include the Music Awards, Music Festivals, AFRIMA Creative Academy, Talent Discovery and Promotions, Music Business Hub, Advocacy, and Advisory & Policy Debates. 'Our goal is to reinforce Africa's position as a moving powerhouse on the global music scene—one hit, one artist, one opportunity at a time and we are excited to be at the fore front of driving this initiative,' she concluded.
Victoria Nkong, President of bridgeAfric and an Associate Producer for AFRIMA, highlighted the workshop's role in shaping the future of Africa's creative industry. 'Education is key to addressing challenges in the entertainment sector. This workshop will equip young talents with essential skills and knowledge,' she said.
The five-day event will feature performances, training sessions, and a three-day global music camp where top musicians will collaborate to produce an international EP featuring leading African artists. 'By the end of the camp, we will have a global EP featuring top African stars from different countries,' Nkong added.
'Another goal of the workshop is to help artists reach new audiences by connecting them with international music executives. This will open doors for them to promote their music in different parts of the world.'
Some of the top artists who have confirmed their participation in the conference and recording camp are Juma Jux from Tanzania, Nadia Nakai from South Africa and DJ Neptune from Nigeria. Ivory Coast will be well represented by global music superstars like the AFRIMA Award winner Didi B, Himra, Suspect 95, Kikimoteleba, Goulam and Gabin Bao.
Other notable participants include Bizzle Osikoya, Co-founder of The Plug Entertainment, and Sesan Adeniji, General Manager of Vybz FM.
From Algeria, DJ MohGreen will bring his expertise, while Eric Bellamy from Live Nation Paris, France will contribute his knowledge of the global music industry. Sonia Aimy from Canada and Wendy Harawa from Malawi are also expected.
In addition to the workshop and music camp, Nkong said a welcome Industry party is scheduled for Wednesday to officially receive the participants.
She added that registration is free for music producers, songwriters, and artists who want to learn, network, and advance their music careers.

Red Sea Fund 2025 invites submissions for fourth cycle
The deadline for submissions is August 21, 2024. The Red Sea Fund, an initiative of the Red Sea Film Foundation, has opened applications for its fourth 2025 cycle, inviting filmmakers from Saudi Arabia, the Arab world, Africa and Asia to apply for post-production grants. The deadline for submissions is August 21. This funding round is dedicated to projects that have completed filming and are entering the post-production stage, covering essential processes such as editing, colour grading, sound design, mixing and other technical elements required to finalise a film for festival screenings or distribution. Since its launch in 2021, the Red Sea Fund has backed more than 280 film projects, many of which have gone on to win critical acclaim and prestigious awards at major international festivals. Eligible projects must be feature-length fiction, documentary, or animation films with a minimum runtime of 60 minutes. The director must be of African, Asian or Arab nationality or origin, and applicants must submit a complete rough cut of the film, at least 60 minutes long, via a private online viewing link. Non-English dialogue must be subtitled in English. Applications must also include a range of mandatory materials, such as a logline, synopsis, chain of titles, final script or treatment, full budget breakdown, financial plan, post-production spending plan, project timelines, director/producer biographies, a mood board and a release and distribution strategy. Only complete online applications submitted according to the form's requirements will be reviewed. Applicants will be notified of the Red Sea Fund Committee's decision approximately ten weeks after the closing date. The committee's decision is final and will not be accompanied by feedback. Selected projects will receive an official letter outlining the amount of financial support and next steps. Successful applicants must confirm acceptance within the specified time and sign a post-production funding agreement within four weeks of acceptance.

Nigeria and Zimbabwe win top honours at Locarno's Open Doors Awards
This year's Open Doors highlighted a new wave of African filmmakers building industry structures, like pan-regional co-productions, genre films and works for Arab or Indian audiences, to reduce reliance on European funding. Open Doors, Locarno's co-production platform and talent development program for filmmakers from equity-seeking communities and regions where artistic expression is at risk, has announced its 2025 winners. In 2025, Open Doors entered its 23rd edition with a renewed focus on 42 countries from the African continent. Six projects in development were selected for their co-production platform, Open Doors Projects, and were eligible for the three main cash prizes. Along with six creative producers who participated in the programme's career-building initiative, Open Doors Producers, and the directors of the short films of the Open Doors Screenings, who form the Open Doors Directors, they make up the full selection of this year's programme. The initiative's main award for the Open Doors Projects, the Open Doors Grant with a total value of CHF 50,000 sponsored by visions sud est (supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation) and the City of Bellinzona, was divided among three projects: Black Snake, directed by Naishe Nyamubaya, produced by Sue-Ellen Chitunya (Zimbabwe) (CHF 25,000), Kachifo (Till the Morning Comes), directed by Dika Ofoma, produced by Blessing Uzzi (Nigeria) (CHF 20,000) and Journal intime d'une femme chèvre (Diary of a Goat Woman), directed by Azata Soro, produced by Nameïta Lica Touré (Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso) (CHF 5,000). Kachifo (Till the Morning Comes) by Dika Ofoma spawned two more awards: the ARTEKino International Award, worth € 6,000, and the Sørfond Award, granting the project to participate in the Sørfond pitching event in November. Les Bilokos (The Bilokos), directed by Erickey Bahati, produced by Giresse Kassonga (DR Congo, France) scooped the CNC Development Grant endowed with € 8,000. The four prizes above were selected by the Open Doors Projects Jury. The jury consisted of Madeline Robert (Manager, visions sud est), John Canciani (Artistic Director, Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur), Lucie Garnier (CNC Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée, DEENTAL-ACP Programme Manager), Julie Savary (ARTE France, Head of Projects) and Ana-Marija Grøndahl (Films from the South, Head of Production). Additionally, the Open Doors partners – Tabakalera-San Sebastian Film Festival, Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF), Rotterdam International Film Festival and World Cinema Fund – provided awards to participants across the three program strands. In 2025, Open Doors partnered up for the first time with MECAS, the International Market for Almost-Finished Films. MECAS gave out an award to June Wairegi (Giza Visuals, Kenya), one of the Open Doors Producers. The prize consists of participation in the market, with the opportunity for personalised meetings and networking, including travel and accommodation costs. The next edition of MECAS will take place in Gran Canaria in April 2026.
