Excise sleuths bust illicit liquor bottling racket
Rajanna Siricilla: In a significant crackdown on illicit liquor trade, the Excise department in Vemulawada on Tuesday apprehended two persons on the charge of operating an illicit bottling unit that repackaged cheap liquor in branded alcohol bottles. The arrests followed a surveillance-based operation undertaken on the basis of credible intelligence. Speaking at a press conference held at the local Excise office here on Wednesday, Circle Inspector Rajasekhar Rao disclosed that one of the accused, identified as Tuniki Karthik from R&R Colony in Rudravanam under Vemulawada Urban mandal, had been clandestinely collecting used bottles of reputed liquor brands such as Black & White, William's Son, Black Dog, Red Label, and Signature. These bottles were reportedly refilled with spurious alcohol and sold to unsuspecting consumers in the local market. The Excise team, acting swiftly on gathered intelligence, conducted a raid at Karthik's residence where they discovered a substantial stock of counterfeit liquor. The seizure included 9 two-litre and 9 one-litre water bottles containing low-grade liquor, in addition to three Signature-branded bottles. Upon interrogation, Karthik confessed to running the operation for over six months with the help of an accomplice, identified as Damarapalli Santosh of Vemulawada town. Subsequent searches at Santosh's premises yielded further contraband — including three bottles each of Signature and William's (750 ml), and one bottle each of IB, RC Red, and Royal Green, along with a half-litre bottle of RC Red. Officials estimate the current market value of the seized material to be around Rs 50,000, with the total volume of illicit transactions conducted by the duo suspected to have crossed Rs 2 lakh during the six-month period. Both accused have been remanded to judicial custody. Further investigation is underway to trace the source of the cheap liquor used and determine if the racket has wider linkages. CI Rajasekhar Rao reiterated the department's commitment to curbing the sale of illicit liquor, stating that 'there will be zero tolerance towards activities endangering public health. We urge citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious liquor trade to the authorities.'

Court asks cops to book actor Swetha Menon for ‘transmitting sexually explicit content'
KOCHI: In an odd move, the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court has directed the Kochi city police to register a case against Malayalam actor Swetha Menon on charges of 'transmitting sexually explicit content' and 'indecent representation' of women through her roles in certain films, some of them widely acclaimed ones. The case, filed on Wednesday by the Ernakulam central police, stems from a complaint filed by activist Martin Menacherry, who claims Swetha earned money from obscene films. The charges, under the Information Technology Act for transmitting sexually explicit content and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, cite her roles in films like Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha, Rathinirvedam, Kalimannu (which included her real-life childbirth), and a condom brand advertisement, alleging clips from these have appeared on social media and pornographic websites. Responding to the controversy, Kalimannu director Blessy suspects the move is planned. 'Even before the release of Kalimannu in 2012, there were controversies and protests against the film and the artists. But once the film was released with a CBFC certificate, those creating issues went silent since there was no obscene content. Now, after 12 years, some people are filing complaints. I suspect a conspiracy behind this,' Blessy told TNIE. Initially, the police reportedly took no action on the complaint. However, Menachery approached the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, which subsequently directed the police to register a case. Ernakulam central SHO Anish Joy expressed confusion over the court's decision to assign the case to their jurisdiction. He added that the police are proceeding with an investigation, including summoning the complainant for a statement. Commenting on the case, Advocate Vimala Binu of the Kerala High Court stated that the charges are unlikely to stand legally. 'Swetha has performed in films as part of her professional freedom. These are certified films, not banned in India. There is no legal violation in acting in such films,' she said. She further noted that Swetha has the option to approach the HC to quash the FIR and seek a stay on the probe.

NHRC lays the blame on police for Pushpa-2 stampede
Hyderabad: The NHRC on Wednesday said Hyderabad police were negligent and failed in their duty to maintain public order during the "Pushpa-2" pre-release event at Sandhya Theatre, where a stampede in Dec 2024 claimed a woman's life and left her son severely injured. The rights body held police responsible for failing to prevent the chaos, despite prior warnings of a large crowd. It issued show-cause notice to the chief secretary of Telangana, asking why it should not recommend a compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the family of the deceased, Revathi, who was killed in the incident. "The commission has considered the report on record. However, it has been noted that there was negligence and a clear lapse in maintaining public order on the part of police authorities, who failed to provide adequate assistance or ensure safety when it was evident that a huge crowd would gather," the NHRC said in its official order on Wednesday. In the chaos that followed, Revathi died, and her teenage son, Sri Tej, was critically injured. Police blamed Allu Arjun's unauthorised visit and the accompanying rally for triggering the stampede. In a second report submitted on July 14, senior police officers informed the NHRC that permission for Arjun's appearance at the theatre had been officially denied, in advance, over public safety concerns. The actor and the film crew arrived at the venue, nevertheless, leading to a massive surge in the crowd. The NHRC questioned the inexplicable inaction of police, asking why law enforcement failed to prevent the unauthorised gathering. "Why was the actor and his entourage allowed entry despite having no permission? Why wasn't action taken in advance to prevent this unlawful gathering?" the commission asked. L Ramesh, ACP, Chikkadpally, stated in his July report that police refrained from intervening, as they feared any attempt to stop the actor could result in damage to public property and disruption of public order. The NHRC, however, found this argument unconvincing. It observed that public order had already been breached due to lack of timely preventive action and failure to enforce the prohibition order. After reviewing both reports from Hyderabad police, the NHRC directed its registry to issue a show-cause notice under Section 18 of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, asking why compensation should not be awarded to Revathi's kin. Over seven months have passed and, yet, the Chikkadpally police have not filed a chargesheet in court, raising serious questions about procedural delays and lack of accountability.
