🔬 The Debrief from a telling night of Sunday action in MLS
Week six of the 2025 MLS season wrapped up tonight after a typical Sunday schedule, with two fixtures providing the bookend to what was another fantastic advert for the top flight across the US and Canada.
Here is how the two matches broke down.
What Happened
A severe weather delay was the highlight of the first of two matches on the docket, with St. Louis City SC hosting Austin FC at Energizer Park.

An opening strike by Verde and Black winger Myrto Uzuni in the 33rd minute gifted Nicolás Estévez's men a deserved lead before the interval, but Olof Mellberg's outfit reached a new gear in the second half while looking capable of bagging an equalizer before the match was delayed due to lightning.
After the restart, St. Louis continued to chip away at the Austin backline as desperation set in, but despite five minutes of added time, a leveler could not be found, setting the club on a two-match losing run after what was a fantastic start to the season.
Sunday Night Soccer in MLS featured the later clash between Western Conference bottom-half pair Portland Timbers and Houston Dynamo at Providence Park.

Phil Neville's men got off to a perfect start as Portland looked to carry over their goalscoring ways at home, with Felipe Mora bagging his second of the season to gift the Timbers an early lead inside the opening six minutes of action.
Houston leveled matters with their first road goal of the 2025 season thanks to an inch-perfect volley from Franco Escobar in the 12th minute, only for Portland to retake the lead after a calm close-range finish by Antony ten minutes later.
Portland would tuck the result under the covers with less than 20 minutes remaining when Antony completed his brace, slotting calmly into an open net after young Houston shot-stopper Blke Gillingham was left scrambling.

After concerns in the wake of losing Evander in the off-season, Portland looks capable of pushing for the upper echelons of the Western Conference.
Player of the day 🥇
The boy from Brazil turned up on an evening out in typical Pacific Northwest weather as Antony delivered a two-goal performance to help Portland continue their charge up the Western Conference ladder.
Stat of the day 📊
Portland fans continue their wait for a first-ever club hat trick after Antony secured the 61st brace in Timbers history across MLS play. Will 2025 be the year for breaking ducks?
What this means 🤔
Austin makes it three wins from their last three as Estévez's side hits form, meaning they climb up to second in the Western Conference, just two points adrift of Vancouver.

After a fantastic start to the season under Mellberg, St. Louis has now slid to the tune of consecutive defeats, now sitting eighth in the table.

Pirates beat Houston 3-0 as Mike Burrows shuts down Astros to pick up first win
Pittsburgh's Mike Burrows held Houston in check into the sixth inning to pick up the first victory of his career as a starter as the Pirates topped the Astros 3-0 on Wednesday night. Burrows (1-1), whose rise through the Pirates system was slowed by Tommy John surgery in 2023, allowed five hits and struck out six in 5 1/3 innings. The 25-year-old right-hander took a significant step forward after giving up eight runs in 8 1/3 innings across his first two starts since being called up from Triple-A Indianapolis. David Bednar worked the ninth for his seventh save. Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz had two hits apiece for Pittsburgh, which snapped a two-game skid. Andrew McCutchen and Isiah Kiner-Falefa both drove in runs against Houston starter Ryan Gusto (3-3) in the second inning to give Burrows all the offense he would need. Jeremy Peña had two of Houston's seven hits as the Astros lost for just the third time in their last 10 games. Gusto, who has split time between the bullpen and the starting rotation, labored through 4 1/3 innings. He needed 83 pitches to record 13 outs and was pulled with two on and one out in the fifth. Gusto allowed three runs on eight hits, with two walks and three strikeouts. The right-hander is 0-2 with an 8.22 ERA in his last six appearances. Houston's biggest threat came in the sixth when a double by Pena and a walk to Jose Altuve put two on with one out. Pirates reliever Chase Shugart retired the next two hitters, with third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes making a nice play on a grounder by Yainer Diaz to end the threat. 11-13: Pittsburgh's record since Don Kelly replaced Derek Shelton as manager on May 8. The interleague series wraps up on Thursday. Framber Valdez (5-4, 3.12 ERA) gets the start for Houston against Pittsburgh veteran Mitch Keller (1-7, 3.73). ___ This story has been corrected to note that this is Burrows' first victory as a starter. He had a victory in relief in 2024. ___ AP MLB:

Giannis Antetokounmpo a Trade Target By a Western Conference Team
Giannis Antetokounmpo a Trade Target By a Western Conference Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. There have been a lot of teams linked to Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. While there is no assurance about what's next for his career, rumors about a potential trade for Antetokounmpo have circulated. After the Bucks' third straight exit in the first round of the NBA playoffs, fans believe the star forward will request a trade out of Milwaukee. Advertisement There were high hopes for the Bucks' second season with their star duo of Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard. However, injuries have prevented them from reaching their true potential in the postseason. Milwaukee suffered an unfortunate injury with Lillard's torn Achilles. He's expected to miss at least the entire 2025-26 campaign and is one of the reasons why people have speculated about Antetokounmpo's departure. Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo reacts after a Taormina-Imagn Images Throughout all this, a few teams have been mentioned in trade rumors. One Western Conference team has been linked to the Antetokounmpo sweepstakes on Tuesday. The Athletic's Kelly Iko reported that the Houston Rockets are interested in trading for the Greek Freak. Advertisement "Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo remains a target, team sources said, but there has been recent uncertainty in the past week on Antetokounmpo's actual availability — not to mention the potential asking price Milwaukee would require," Iko wrote. The Rockets finished second in the West but were eliminated in the first round by the Golden State Warriors. Although the team has a promising young core, the group needs an experienced player to help them get past the tougher teams in the conference. Acquiring a player like Antetokounmpo could push the Rockets to actual title contention. The nine-time All-Star has been in nine playoff appearances in his 12-year career. Advertisement However, Houston has to wait until after Antetokounmpo's upcoming meeting with the Bucks in the offseason. Related: Stephen A.
