Man convicted of Meredith Kercher's murder facing trial for sexual assault

Yahoo6 days ago
Rudy Guede, the only person definitively convicted of the brutal 2007 murder of British student Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, will be back in court this fall facing charges of sexual assault and violence against a former girlfriend.
Guede, a 38-year-old Ivory Coast native who has lived in Italy since the age of five, was sentenced to 30 years in prison for Kercher's murder in October 2008. His sentence was reduced on appeal before he was released early for good behavior in 2021.
The case sparked a media frenzy, spawning more than two dozen books and three films.
More than 100,000 photos, thousands of chats and audio messages between Guede and the unnamed victim are among the evidence to be considered in the trial, according to the investigating magistrate Rita Cialoni, who ordered Guede to stand trial in a preliminary hearing in Viterbo on Friday.
The two began dating while Guede was still in prison and ended their relationship in 2023 when the woman pressed charges against him, according to Italian media.
American student Amanda Knox, who was Kercher's roommate at the time she was killed, and Knox's then-boyfriend Italian Raffaele Sollecito, were convicted in tandem for their alleged role in Kercher's murder in 2009, but were fully exonerated by Italy's Supreme Court in 2015 following a topsy-turvy legal battle.
Knox, remains convicted of slander for accusing her former nightclub boss Patrick Lumumba of Kercher's murder in 2007.
Guede's new indictment and trial stems from 2023 accusations of sexual assault, mistreatment and stalking, by a 25-year-old woman Guede dated from Viterbo, where Guede worked first on work release from prison and then after his release. His first hearing will be held November 4 in Viterbo.
His lawyer Carlo Mezzetti told CNN his client was innocent and feared he would not get a fair trial given his previous conviction.

Pro Football Hall of Famer and podcast star Shannon Sharpe settles sexual assault and battery lawsuit

Editor's Note: This report contains graphic descriptions of sexual acts. Former NFL star Shannon Sharpe has reached a settlement with the anonymous woman who filed a lawsuit against the famed tight end, accusing him of multiple instances of assault, sexual assault, battery and sexual battery, according to a statement from the accuser's attorney on Friday. 'Both sides acknowledge a long-term consensual and tumultuous relationship,' attorney Tony Buzbee said. 'After protracted and respectful negotiations, I'm pleased to announce that we have reached a mutually agreed upon resolution. All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily, and the matter is closed. The lawsuit will thus be dismissed with prejudice.' A spokesperson for Sharpe confirmed the details of Buzbee's statement and said that the three-time Super Bowl winner would not be commenting further on the matter. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed. The lawsuit originally sought compensatory and punitive damages of more than $50 million. Sharpe's legal representatives previously described the lawsuit, filed in April, as an attempt to 'shake down' the popular podcaster for millions of dollars and said he 'categorically denies all allegations of coercion or misconduct.' Sharpe has also disputed the claims. 'To my family, friends, supporters and colleagues, I want to speak to you directly and from the heart,' Sharpe said in a video released on X in April. 'This is a shakedown. I'm going to be open, transparent and defend myself, because this isn't right.' In the suit filed in a Las Vegas district court, 'Jane Doe' accused former NFL All-Pro of 'manipulating and controlling' the plaintiff during a nearly two-year period that started in 2023 as a consensual relationship when the woman was 20 years old. The civil complaint alleged Sharpe, 56, 'violently sexually assaulted and anally raped Plaintiff,' in October 2024 and again in January of this year in Las Vegas, Nevada, 'blatantly ignoring her requests for him to stop.' The suit stated: 'After many months of manipulating and controlling Plaintiff — a woman more than thirty years younger than he — and repeatedly threatening to brutally choke and violently slap her, Sharpe refused to accept the answer no and raped Plaintiff, despite her sobbing and repeated screams of 'no.'' When asked if Jane Doe had contacted police during or after the alleged assaults, Buzbee said he could not comment. Sharpe's attorney, Lanny J. Davis, said the woman is attempting to blackmail his client and that the pair's relationship was consensual and 'sexual in nature — and, in many cases, initiated by her with specific and graphic requests.' The Pro Football Hall of Famer was inducted as part of the Class of 2011. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos in 1990 and retired following the 2003 season as the NFL's all-time leader in catches, yards and touchdowns by a tight end. Sharpe won two Super Bowls with Denver and then another while a member of the Baltimore Ravens. After his playing career Sharpe went on to a successful television career and hosts the popular 'Club Shay Shay' podcast. In the wake of the lawsuit, Sharpe announced he would temporarily take time away from his role on ESPN, where he is one of the faces of the morning sports debate show 'First Take.' 'I will be devoting this time to my family, and responding and dealing with these false and disruptive allegations set against me. I plan to return to ESPN at the start of the NFL preseason,' Sharpe said at the time. Following Sharpe's announcement, ESPN said in a statement, 'This is a serious situation, and we agree with Shannon's decision to step away.' ESPN declined to comment on Friday's settlement and Sharpe's potential return to the network.

Man out on bail arrested in Vallejo homicide investigation, police say

A suspect was arrested in connection with the Vallejo deadly shooting earlier this month, police said on Friday. In the early morning hours on July 5, police said they found a woman unconscious on the 400 block of Admiral Callaghan Lane. Medics arrived and found that she had been shot. She was then transported to the local hospital, where she later died, police said. Vallejo detectives identified the suspect as 42-year-old Jose Guadalupe Castillo of Vallejo, who police said was out on bail after he was arrested in early May for willfully discharging a firearm in a grossly negligent manner and for being a felon in possession of a firearm. Police found Castillo on Admiral Callaghan Lane after police said he walked into a convenience store to evade them, but officers were able to arrest him inside the store without further incident. They located a firearm with an extended magazine in the aisle where Castillo had been prior, police said. He was booked into jail for being a felon in possession of a firearm, police said. On Friday, Solano County prosecutors reviewed evidence, eventually charging Castillo with second-degree murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, being a felon in possession of a firearm and committing a felony while out on bail. Vallejo police said they were seeking information about a possible road rage incident that potentially occurred before the victim was found.
