Monsoon rains in Pakistan kill 54 people in 24 hours

Yahoo17-07-2025
Heavy monsoon rains killed at least 54 people in eastern Pakistan in 24 hours, bringing the total rain-related deaths in the country to 178 over the past three weeks, officials say.
Rain had triggered flash floods and inundated several villages as the country experienced 82 per cent more rainfall in July compared with the same period in July 2024, the Pakistan Meteorological Department said.
Since June 26, Pakistan has reported 178 deaths from Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the northwest, Sindh in the south and Balochistan in the southwest, officials said.
The 54 deaths in the past day occurred in Punjab province, which received 124 per cent more rainfall between July 1 and July 15 than the same period the previous year, forecasters said.
Heavy downpours continued on Thursday, flooding streets in several urban areas including Rawalpindi and Lahore.
Cloudburst in the Jhelum district in Punjab triggered flash flooding, prompting authorities to use boats to evacuate dozens of people.
The National Disaster Management Authority issued an updated flood alert and urged local officials to remain on high alert.
Tourists were advised to avoid travel to affected areas where rains could trigger landslides and block highways.
Television news footage on Thursday showed an army helicopter plucking three members of a family from the roof of their house after they were stranded by a flash flood on the outskirts of Rawalpindi city.
More rain is expected in the capital Islamabad, Pakistan-administered Kashmir and other parts of the country, the meteorological department reported.
Authorities have warned they cannot rule out a repeat of extreme weather like the 2022 floods that inundated a third of the country, killing 1737 people.

Heavy rain causes flooding, evacuations and at least 38 deaths around Beijing region

China Floods BEIJING (AP) — Heavy rain caused flooding and landslides that washed away cars, forced evacuations and knocked out power around the Chinese capital, killing at least 38 people by Tuesday and rescue and relief work continued. The flood risk for parts of Beijing, Hebei province and neighboring Tianjin city remained high until Tuesday evening. State media broadcast footage of muddy waters rising into homes in rural areas and rescuers carrying an injured person on a stretcher and searching on a damaged road. Premier Li Qiang said the heavy rain and flooding in the hard-hit Beijing district of Miyun caused 'serious casualties' and called for rescue efforts, according to the Xinhua News Agency. The storm knocked out power in more than 130 villages in Beijing, destroyed communication lines and damaged more than 30 sections of road. More than 16 centimeters (6 inches) of rain fell on average in Beijing by midnight, with two towns in Miyun recording 54 centimeters (21 inches) of precipitation, the city said. Heavy flooding washed away cars and downed power poles in Miyun, an outlying district that borders Hebei's Luanping county. More than 80,000 people have been relocated in Beijing, including about 17,000 in Miyun, a Beijing city statement said. The city government said 28 people died in Miyun and two others in Yanqing district Monday. Four additional people in neighboring Hebei province were discovered dead Tuesday, state broadcaster CCTV reported, after eight people were said to be missing after a landslide in a rural part of Luanping county in the province. Authorities had found four of the dead Monday. Emergency rescue teams said more landslides occurred in the same region Tuesday, although they did not report any further casualties. Uprooted trees lay in piles in the town of Taishitun, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of central Beijing. Streets were covered with water, with mud left higher up on the walls of buildings.

Fifth wettest July on record to end with sunny weather

As one of Calgary's rainiest Julys on record draws to a close, Calgarians can look forward to a few days of reprieve from the wet weather, followed by another rainy weekend. This month was the fifth wettest July on record, with 139.6 millimeters as of Sunday evening — more than double the average precipitation for July. 'We could move into fourth place or even third place today, depending on if we get into another thunderstorm,' said Crawford Luke, a meteorologist at Environment and Climate Change Canada. 'There was one earlier this morning, and we could expect another one later today.' The rainiest ever July was in 1927, which saw a total of 245.4 millimeters of precipitation. Related 'Folkies have a plan': Calgary Folk Fest crowds prove weatherproof amid rain, mud and record cold Wet July bad news for landscaping, good news for garden centres Sunday's weather also broke temperature records, with the airport recording the coldest daytime high for July 27 since 1931. Some areas, including Bow Valley, Canada Olympic Park and Cochrane, were the chilliest on record for that day. Beginning Tuesday, however, Calgarians will be able to enjoy a few days of sunny weather — though it may come with higher-than-average humidity after the record-breaking rain. Though more showers are predicted for the upcoming long weekend, current forecasts are showing that the weather should improve in August. 'It looks like, overall, it's going to be average for precipitation over the next few weeks, and temperatures should actually be on the warm side,' Luke said. River flows elevated, but no flooding expected River levels are currently higher than normal for this time of year, but are not yet at risk of flooding, according to Frank Frigo, the city's manager of environmental management. 'Though flows are elevated, they're not at the point where any kind of overland flooding is expected, and no flood response is anticipated,' he said. However, anyone spending time on or around Calgary's rivers in the coming days should be cautious of other risks associated with elevated flows, Frigo said. 'When we have higher flows like this, the temperature of the water is cooler,' he said. 'We have the potential for near-bank erosion, and the turbidity is high — that means you can't really see through the water to notice any potential debris or hazards that might be there.' Debris in the rivers tends to collect around bridges, so extra caution is advised for those areas. Frigo said the city has also responded to more than 560 service calls over the past 10 days due to localized flooding throughout the city. 'We are seeing some localized and shorter-term ponding in open spaces and on roadways, streets and green spaces as well,' he said. 'We're trying to address those in a prioritized manner.' Calgarians are encouraged to call 311 to report any flooding concerns.

Flash floods in Romania kill at least 3 people and force hundreds of evacuations

BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) — Torrential rainstorms hit Romania overnight and into Monday, triggering flash floods in the country's northeast and killing at least three people, officials said. Hundreds were forced to leave their homes as Romania's rescue services deployed in the hard-hit counties of Neamt and Suceava. Helicopters and firefighters rescued residents, some of whom were trapped in their homes by floodwaters. Authorities said that 890 people were evacuated from Neamt. First responders found a 66-year-old man dead at the bottom of a stream in the town of Neagra, according to the Department for Emergency Situations. Two women who had been reported missing were also later found dead. Authorities also released images showing raging muddy floodwaters strewn with battered vehicles and other debris, as well as damaged homes. The Associated Press Sign in to access your portfolio
